Felix Nmecha Fires Borussia Dortmund to 2-1 Victory Over Elversberg With Stunning Brace
Borussia Dortmund maintained their unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over SV Elversberg. Felix Nmecha was the difference-maker at Signal Iduna Park, scoring twice in the second half before Noel Futkeu’s late goal set up a tense finish.

Borussia Dortmund Secure Important Bundesliga Victory Against Elversberg
Borussia Dortmund continued their impressive start to the 2026/27 Bundesliga campaign with a 2-1 victory over SV Elversberg on Saturday, November 7, at Signal Iduna Park. A second-half brace from Felix Nmecha proved decisive as Niko Kovac’s men collected another three points in front of their home supporters.
The result extended Dortmund’s unbeaten run in the Bundesliga to nine matches, keeping them firmly involved in the title race. Although the hosts were made to work for their victory, Nmecha’s outstanding performance ensured that Elversberg left Dortmund without a point despite a determined effort.
Dortmund entered the contest looking to maintain their momentum following their recent European commitments. Having played Real Betis in the Champions League just three days earlier, Kovac made three changes to his starting lineup, introducing Joane Gadou, Carney Chukwuemeka and Konstantinos Karetsas.
Elversberg, meanwhile, arrived with confidence after recording an impressive 4-1 victory over Mainz in their previous league fixture. Vincent Wagner retained the same starting eleven, hoping his players could reproduce that performance against one of Germany’s strongest sides.
The visitors approached the encounter with a clear plan, remaining compact defensively and looking for opportunities to exploit spaces whenever Dortmund committed players forward.
Elversberg Make Life Difficult for Dortmund in First Half
Despite playing away from home, Elversberg showed little interest in simply defending for the entire afternoon. They remained organised, pressed at important moments and attempted to take advantage of Dortmund’s defensive positioning.
The opening period was competitive, with both teams creating opportunities without finding the breakthrough. Dortmund enjoyed spells of possession but struggled to turn their control of the ball into clear-cut scoring opportunities.
Fabio Silva came close to producing an important moment for the hosts after a quick attacking transition. The Portuguese forward attempted to curl an effort towards goal, but his attempt finished in the side netting.
Nmecha also tested Elversberg goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof, who remained alert to prevent Dortmund from taking an early advantage. Silva subsequently came close to reaching a rebound but could not direct the ball into the net.
Elversberg were equally capable of creating problems at the other end. Lukas Petkov tested Gregor Kobel with attempts from distance, forcing the Dortmund goalkeeper to remain attentive as the visitors looked for an opening.
The visitors’ defensive organisation frustrated Dortmund for much of the opening 45 minutes. Their midfield worked hard to close passing lanes, while the defenders maintained their shape whenever the hosts attempted to accelerate their attacks.
Dortmund also suffered an injury setback when Carney Chukwuemeka was forced off in the 34th minute. Maximilian Beier entered the match as his replacement, giving Kovac another attacking option.
Elversberg captain Lukas Pinckert also had to leave the pitch after sustaining a knock, with Florian Le Joncour replacing him in the 37th minute.
Neither side managed to break the deadlock before the interval, meaning the teams headed into the dressing rooms with the score still 0-0.
Nmecha Breaks the Deadlock After the Restart
Dortmund returned for the second half with greater attacking urgency, recognising the importance of finding an early goal against an opponent that had defended confidently.
The hosts immediately began creating more dangerous situations around the Elversberg penalty area. Jobe Bellingham and Konstantinos Karetsas both had opportunities, but Kristof continued to provide resistance between the posts.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 55th minute, with Nmecha producing the finishing touch that Dortmund had been searching for.
Fabio Silva collected a diagonal pass and carried the ball into a dangerous position before laying it off to the approaching midfielder. Nmecha needed little time to prepare his effort, sending a low shot into the bottom corner from outside the penalty area.
The goal changed the atmosphere inside Signal Iduna Park and gave Dortmund the advantage they had struggled to establish during the first half.
However, Elversberg refused to surrender. The visitors continued looking for an equaliser and created situations that required Dortmund’s defenders and goalkeeper to remain focused.
Petkov threatened from a free kick in the 61st minute, but Kobel produced an important save to protect his team’s lead.
Kovac responded to the growing pressure by making changes in the 67th minute, introducing Julian Ryerson and Ramy Bensebaini for Gadou and Karetsas. The adjustments helped Dortmund strengthen their defensive structure while maintaining their ability to threaten on the counterattack.
Nmecha Doubles Dortmund’s Advantage With Powerful Strike
Just when Elversberg appeared to be gaining confidence, Dortmund found another opportunity to increase their advantage.
In the 69th minute, Silva was denied by Kristof during a promising attacking move, while Beier also saw an effort blocked by the visiting defence.
The loose ball eventually fell into Nmecha’s path, and the midfielder made no mistake with his second attempt of the afternoon.
From approximately 23 metres, he unleashed a powerful strike that flew into the bottom corner, leaving Kristof with virtually no opportunity to make a save.
The shot was recorded at approximately 124.22 kilometres per hour, highlighting the power behind an outstanding finish.
Nmecha’s second goal arrived in the 71st minute and appeared to put Dortmund in a comfortable position. His brace gave the hosts a two-goal cushion and rewarded their improved attacking display after the break.
For Elversberg, the challenge became considerably more difficult. They needed to find a response quickly if they wanted to take anything from a match in which Dortmund had begun to establish greater control.
Futkeu Gives Elversberg Hope With Spectacular Goal
Despite trailing by two goals, Elversberg demonstrated the fighting spirit that had helped them earn positive results earlier in the campaign.
Wagner introduced Nicholas Mickelson, Raif Adam and Noel Futkeu in the 78th minute, hoping the fresh attacking options could change the direction of the contest.
The substitutions produced an immediate impact, with Futkeu becoming the player who brought the visitors back into the game.
In the 81st minute, Elversberg created danger from a short corner. The delivery eventually reached Le Joncour, who used a header to direct the ball into Futkeu’s path.
The forward responded with a spectacular overhead kick from inside the penalty area, sending the ball beyond Kobel and reducing the deficit to 2-1.
It was an impressive finish that gave the travelling supporters renewed belief and suddenly placed Dortmund under pressure.
The goal also changed the nature of the closing stages. Rather than comfortably managing their advantage, the hosts were forced to defend against an Elversberg side that now believed an equaliser was possible.
Dortmund needed to remain disciplined, and Ryerson produced an important defensive intervention in the 85th minute, sending the ball behind for a corner to prevent another dangerous opportunity.
The hosts also introduced Marcel Sabitzer and Ethan Nwaneri in the 86th minute, replacing Jobe Bellingham and Fabio Silva.
Elversberg continued searching for another opening, but Dortmund managed the remaining minutes with determination. The visitors threatened again during stoppage time, yet the home defence held firm.
When the final whistle arrived, Dortmund had secured a valuable 2-1 victory.
Dortmund Maintain Unbeaten Bundesliga Record
The victory represented another important result for Dortmund as they continued their pursuit of the Bundesliga title.
After nine league matches, Kovac’s side remained unbeaten and level on points with Bayern Munich at the top of the standings, according to the Bundesliga match report.
However, the performance also highlighted areas that Dortmund will need to address. Their difficulty in creating clear opportunities during the first half and the late pressure from Elversberg demonstrated that there is still room for improvement.
Elversberg deserve credit for their performance. They competed confidently against a strong opponent, created opportunities of their own and refused to give up even after falling two goals behind.
Their late response made the final stages uncomfortable for Dortmund, although it was not enough to change the outcome.
For the Black and Yellows, the most important achievement was collecting all three points while maintaining their impressive unbeaten run.
Man of the Match: Felix Nmecha
Felix Nmecha was deservedly named Man of the Match after delivering the decisive performance in Dortmund’s 2-1 victory.
The midfielder scored both goals for the hosts, taking responsibility when his team needed someone to produce a moment of quality.
His first goal in the 55th minute demonstrated his composure and ability to find space around the edge of the penalty area. Rather than rushing his finish, he placed a low effort beyond Kristof to give Dortmund the lead.
The second strike was arguably even more impressive. Nmecha showed tremendous power and technique to send a long-range effort into the bottom corner, leaving the Elversberg goalkeeper helpless.
According to the Bundesliga’s official match report, he registered five shots, the highest total recorded by any player during the encounter. He also received 78 per cent of the votes in the official Man of the Match poll.
Beyond his goalscoring contribution, Nmecha played an important role in Dortmund’s midfield, helping the team progress forward and maintain attacking pressure.
His ability to influence the match in decisive moments made him the standout performer on an afternoon when Dortmund needed individual quality to overcome a stubborn opponent.
The brace also took his Bundesliga goal tally to three for the season, underlining his growing importance to Kovac’s team.
For Elversberg, Futkeu deserves recognition for his spectacular late finish, but Nmecha’s two goals ultimately decided the contest.
Dortmund will now look to build on this result as they continue their pursuit of domestic success, while Elversberg can take encouragement from a performance that pushed one of the Bundesliga’s leading sides until the final whistle.
