Middlesbrough Crush Bolton 5-1 as Lankshear Stars in Stunning Championship Victory
Middlesbrough produced a dominant away performance to defeat Bolton Wanderers 5-1, with Will Lankshear scoring twice as Boro moved to the top of the Championship table.

Middlesbrough delivered one of their most convincing performances of the Championship season on Friday night, sweeping aside Bolton Wanderers 5-1 at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
The victory was built on an outstanding attacking display from Middlesbrough, who controlled large portions of the game and created chances almost at will. Will Lankshear was at the centre of the performance, scoring twice, while Aidan Morris and Amario Cozier-Duberry also found the net. Bolton’s third goal was completed by an unfortunate own goal from Lewis Brunt.
The result saw Middlesbrough move to the top of the Championship table, underlining their ambitions at the top end of the division. Their performance was particularly impressive because they combined possession with an aggressive attacking approach, finishing the game with 31 shots compared with Bolton’s 12.
Middlesbrough Make Fast Start
Middlesbrough wasted very little time establishing control.
The visitors came into the match with an attacking mindset and quickly forced Bolton onto the back foot. Their pressure eventually produced the opening goal in the 13th minute.
Aidan Morris put Middlesbrough ahead after receiving the ball from Amario Cozier-Duberry before finishing the move to make it 1-0. The early goal gave Boro confidence and allowed them to dictate the rhythm of the contest.
Bolton struggled to respond effectively as Middlesbrough continued to find space in dangerous areas.
The visitors doubled their advantage in the 31st minute when Lankshear got his name on the scoresheet. Tommy Conway provided the assist, with the striker finishing the opportunity to give Middlesbrough a 2-0 lead.
Lankshear’s goal was another indication of the influence he has developed in Middlesbrough’s attack. His movement caused problems for Bolton’s defenders, while his ability to find dangerous positions gave the hosts little room to recover.
Own Goal Gives Boro Three-Goal Advantage
Middlesbrough’s dominance was rewarded again eight minutes later.
Bolton defender Lewis Brunt turned the ball into his own net in the 39th minute, leaving the home side facing a three-goal deficit before half-time.
At that stage, Middlesbrough appeared to be heading towards a comfortable victory. However, Bolton managed to give their supporters something to celebrate just before the interval.
Thelonius Bair pulled one goal back for the hosts in first-half stoppage time. Gaizka Larrazabal supplied the assist, allowing Bolton to reduce the deficit to 3-1 at the break.
Despite Bolton’s late response, Middlesbrough had already established a strong position and had shown enough attacking quality to suggest that another goal could follow after the interval.
Boro Finish the Job After the Break
Bolton needed a strong second-half response, but Middlesbrough quickly regained control.
The visitors continued to dominate possession and repeatedly tested the Bolton defence. The statistics reflected the difference between the two sides, with Middlesbrough finishing with 61 per cent possession and 12 shots on target. Bolton managed 39 per cent possession and four shots on target.
Middlesbrough eventually added a fourth goal in the 73rd minute.
Amario Cozier-Duberry, who had already contributed an assist earlier in the match, got his name on the scoresheet. Riley McGree supplied the final pass as Middlesbrough extended their advantage to 4-1.
With Bolton’s resistance fading, Middlesbrough continued looking for more.
Just five minutes later, Lankshear completed his brace.
McGree was again involved, providing the assist for Lankshear’s second goal of the night in the 78th minute. The finish completed a superb individual performance from the Middlesbrough striker and sealed the 5-1 victory.
Lankshear Named Man of the Match
Will Lankshear was the standout performer on a night when several Middlesbrough players impressed.
The striker scored two goals, including the second and fifth goals of the game, and consistently troubled Bolton’s defence throughout the contest. His finishing and movement made him a constant threat, particularly once Middlesbrough established control.
FotMob awarded Lankshear a 9.0 rating and named him Player of the Match, making him the clear standout performer in their match ratings.
His brace also continued an impressive start to life at Middlesbrough. According to Sky Sports, the two goals took Lankshear to 11 league goals and 13 in all competitions, highlighting just how important he has become to Boro’s attacking ambitions.
Although Morris also deserves significant credit for his contribution, particularly after opening the scoring, Lankshear’s two goals and overall attacking influence ultimately made him the leading candidate for the individual award.
McGree and Cozier-Duberry Impress
While Lankshear took the headlines, Middlesbrough’s victory was very much a team effort.
Riley McGree played a major role in the second-half surge, supplying assists for both Cozier-Duberry and Lankshear. His creativity gave Middlesbrough another dimension in the final third and helped the visitors turn a comfortable lead into a heavy victory.
Cozier-Duberry was also influential. He assisted Morris for the opening goal before scoring Middlesbrough’s fourth, giving Bolton another problem to deal with on the flank.
Morris combined his attacking contribution with a disciplined performance in midfield, while the rest of the Middlesbrough side maintained the pressure that prevented Bolton from building any sustained momentum.
The numbers showed just how one-sided the contest became. Middlesbrough registered 31 attempts compared with Bolton’s 12, while their 12 shots on target were three times the hosts’ total. The visitors also recorded 12 corners to Bolton’s two.
Middlesbrough Send a Message
The emphatic result represents more than just three points for Middlesbrough.
Moving to the top of the Championship table gives Kim Hellberg’s side an important boost as the season develops. The performance also demonstrated that Boro possess the attacking firepower required to compete for promotion.
Bolton, meanwhile, will have to regroup after suffering a heavy home defeat. They showed some character by reducing the deficit before half-time, but Middlesbrough’s quality eventually proved too much.
For Middlesbrough, the night belonged to Lankshear. His two goals, combined with Morris’ opener, Brunt’s own goal and Cozier-Duberry’s second-half strike, produced a comprehensive victory.
The 5-1 scoreline reflected Middlesbrough’s superiority and sent a strong warning to the rest of the Championship: Boro are not simply competing near the top of the table — they are showing they have the quality to stay there.
