Northern Districts secured a hard-fought three-wicket victory over Otago Volts in the Ford Trophy after successfully chasing 259 at Cobham Oval. Henry Cooper starred with both bat and ball, while Michael Sclanders and Xavier Bell made important contributions to the winning effort.

Northern Districts Hold Their Nerve to Defeat Otago Volts
Northern Districts produced a determined performance to defeat Otago Volts by three wickets in the 2026–27 Ford Trophy, successfully chasing a target of 259 in a closely contested encounter at Cobham Oval in Whangarei on Saturday, November 7.
The match delivered an entertaining contest between two sides that had opportunities to take control. Otago Volts established a competitive total after winning the toss and choosing to bat first, but Northern Districts responded with a composed batting performance to complete the chase at 259 for seven after 50 overs.
Although Otago managed to put considerable pressure on their opponents during the second innings, Northern Districts found important contributions from several players. Henry Cooper, Michael Sclanders, Robert O’Donnell and Xavier Bell all played significant roles in ensuring the home side secured the victory.
The result was particularly important for Northern Districts, who needed a positive performance after experiencing difficulties in their previous outing. Their ability to recover from the loss of wickets and maintain control during the closing stages demonstrated the determination within the team.
Otago Volts Build Competitive Total After Winning the Toss
Otago Volts began the contest with the intention of establishing a strong batting platform after deciding to bat first. However, their innings did not get off to the most encouraging start.
Jacob Cumming was dismissed for just one run after Kristian Clarke found an early breakthrough, leaving Otago with an immediate challenge. Jack Boyle and Thorn Parkes subsequently attempted to rebuild the innings, combining to provide some stability after the early setback.
Boyle contributed 25 runs from 53 deliveries before falling to Snehith Reddy, while Parkes continued to hold his position at the crease. The wicketkeeper-batter eventually scored 42 from 63 balls, striking three boundaries.
Luke Georgeson was unable to make a substantial contribution, departing for seven after being dismissed by Henry Cooper. His dismissal left Otago under pressure at 65 for three, making the partnership between Parkes and Tom Jones particularly important.
Jones gradually settled into his innings and began finding opportunities to score against the Northern Districts bowling attack. His partnership with Parkes helped Otago recover from their difficult beginning, although Parkes was eventually dismissed for 42.
With wickets falling at regular intervals, Otago needed their middle-order batters to deliver something substantial. Tom Jones and Jamal Todd provided exactly that.
Jamal Todd and Tom Jones Lead Otago’s Recovery
The partnership between Tom Jones and Jamal Todd became the defining period of Otago’s first innings.
Both batters displayed patience and attacking intent, ensuring their side recovered from the early losses and moved towards a competitive total.
Jones played a controlled innings, scoring 65 runs from 76 deliveries. His contribution included four boundaries, and he demonstrated an ability to rotate the strike while punishing deliveries that offered opportunities to score.
At the other end, Todd adopted a more aggressive approach. The right-handed batter produced an impressive 77 from 66 balls, striking eight boundaries and maintaining a strike rate of 116.67.
Their partnership was worth 110 runs from 113 deliveries, giving Otago the momentum they desperately needed. The pair worked effectively together, with Jones providing stability and Todd taking advantage of scoring opportunities.
However, Northern Districts eventually found a way to break the partnership. Henry Cooper dismissed Jones for 65, ending a valuable contribution that had placed Otago in a much stronger position.
Cooper subsequently removed Todd, whose dismissal for 77 was another significant moment in the contest.
The Northern Districts bowler continued his excellent spell by dismissing Ben Lockrose for 13, completing an outstanding four-wicket performance.
Troy Johnson added nine runs, while Zac Cumming contributed five. Thomas O’Connor finished unbeaten on four, with Matthew Bacon remaining not out on one.
Otago Volts eventually completed their 50 overs with 258 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Although their late wickets prevented them from pushing towards a substantially higher score, they had established a respectable target for Northern Districts.
Henry Cooper Leads Northern Districts’ Bowling Effort
Henry Cooper was the standout performer with the ball, finishing with figures of four wickets for 50 runs from his allotted 10 overs.
His contribution was particularly important because he removed several of Otago’s most influential batters, including Tom Jones and Jamal Todd.
Cooper’s ability to break partnerships prevented Otago from completely dominating the innings, especially during a period when Jones and Todd appeared capable of taking their team beyond 270 runs.
Josh Brown also contributed with two wickets, conceding 54 runs from nine overs. Kristian Clarke, James Naylor and Snehith Reddy each claimed one wicket.
Northern Districts’ bowling performance ensured that Otago remained below the 260-run mark, leaving their batters with a manageable target heading into the second innings.
Northern Districts Respond Through Sclanders and O’Donnell
Chasing 259 required Northern Districts to maintain a reasonable scoring rate while avoiding unnecessary losses during the early stages.
Henry Cooper and Michael Sclanders opened the innings and immediately faced the responsibility of giving their team a solid foundation.
The pair established an important opening partnership worth 88 runs before Cooper was dismissed for 45 from 69 deliveries.
His innings included four boundaries and provided Northern Districts with a useful start. Cooper’s contribution also completed an impressive all-round performance following his four wickets earlier in the match.
Michael Sclanders continued to anchor the innings after Cooper’s departure. He demonstrated considerable patience, spending 100 deliveries at the crease to score 71 runs.
His innings included four boundaries and a six, making him one of the most important contributors to Northern Districts’ successful chase.
Joe Carter joined Sclanders and added 22 runs from 30 balls before Zac Cumming brought his innings to an end.
Sclanders eventually departed for 71 after being dismissed by Luke Georgeson, but his contribution had already placed Northern Districts in a promising position.
With the score reaching 170 for three, the home side had established a strong foundation for the remaining batters.
Robert O’Donnell subsequently took responsibility for maintaining the momentum.
The Northern Districts captain scored 52 runs from 50 deliveries, hitting five boundaries and one six. His innings was particularly valuable because it prevented Otago from taking complete control following the dismissals of the established batters.
However, Ben Lockrose continued to provide resistance with the ball, dismissing O’Donnell and eventually finishing with four wickets for 50 runs.
Brett Hampton also departed for six, leaving Northern Districts needing their lower order to finish the job.
Xavier Bell Delivers the Decisive Contribution
With the match approaching its closing stages, Xavier Bell produced an explosive innings that ultimately helped Northern Districts cross the finishing line.
Bell arrived at the crease when his team needed someone capable of changing the momentum. Rather than allowing the required run rate to become a problem, he immediately adopted an attacking approach.
The batter scored an unbeaten 37 from just 19 deliveries, striking two fours and two sixes at an impressive strike rate of 194.74.
His innings provided the acceleration Northern Districts needed after several important wickets had fallen.
Although Kristian Clarke and Snehith Reddy were dismissed for two runs each, Bell maintained his composure and continued to attack the bowling.
Ben Pomare also played a useful supporting role, remaining unbeaten on 10 from 10 deliveries.
The pair ensured that Northern Districts avoided another late collapse and completed the chase with 259 runs for seven wickets after their allotted 50 overs.
Bell’s contribution was especially significant because he transformed a potentially uncomfortable finish into a successful result for the home side.
Henry Cooper’s Outstanding All-Round Performance
Henry Cooper deserves considerable recognition for his influence on the match.
The Northern Districts player contributed in both innings, first with the bat and subsequently with the ball.
His 45 runs from 69 deliveries provided a strong opening platform during the chase, while his four wickets for 50 runs restricted Otago to 258 for nine.
Cooper’s dismissals of Georgeson, Jones, Todd and Lockrose were particularly important because they prevented Otago from building an even larger total.
His ability to contribute in different departments made him one of the most influential players in the encounter.
While Sclanders recorded the highest individual score for Northern Districts and Bell delivered the decisive late acceleration, Cooper’s combined contribution with bat and ball stood out as an important factor behind the victory.
What the Result Means for Northern Districts
The three-wicket victory gives Northern Districts a valuable result in their 2026–27 Ford Trophy campaign.
The performance demonstrated that the team possesses several players capable of stepping forward when the situation demands it.
Cooper’s bowling, Sclanders’ patience, O’Donnell’s contribution and Bell’s late attacking innings combined to produce a successful chase against an Otago side that had remained competitive throughout the contest.
For Otago Volts, the defeat will be disappointing considering the efforts of Todd and Jones, who helped their team recover from an uncertain start.
Their 258-run total was competitive, and Ben Lockrose’s four-wicket performance ensured Northern Districts had to work hard for the victory. However, the visitors were unable to defend their score, with Bell’s late contribution proving difficult to contain.
Northern Districts will take confidence from the manner in which they handled the pressure, particularly after losing several wickets during the latter stages of their innings.
Ultimately, the difference between the two sides was their ability to produce decisive contributions at crucial moments.
With Otago posting 258 for nine and Northern Districts responding with 259 for seven, the encounter provided an entertaining example of competitive one-day cricket.
Northern Districts emerged victorious by three wickets, completing a successful run chase at Cobham Oval and securing an important result in the Ford Trophy.
