Nollywood is mourning the death of veteran actor Francis Duru, who passed away at the age of 57 after a brief illness.

The actor’s family announced his death in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026, through a statement published on his official Instagram page. The family asked the public to remember them in their prayers while expressing appreciation for the support shown by fans and well-wishers.

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the family said.

“We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”

The announcement immediately triggered an outpouring of grief across Nollywood, with actors, filmmakers and fans paying tribute to a performer whose career stretched from the early days of the Nigerian film industry into the modern era.

A career that began in 1989

Duru was born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State. He completed his early education in Cameroon before returning to Nigeria, where he studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt and graduated in 1996.

His professional acting journey began in 1989 when he appeared in Missing Mark, directed by the late filmmaker Ndubuisi Oko.

Although his early work did not immediately make him a household name, Duru continued to build his craft and eventually became one of the familiar faces of Nigerian cinema.

His major breakthrough came in 1995 when he played Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s acclaimed film Rattlesnake. The role became one of the defining performances of his career and helped establish him as a prominent actor during Nollywood’s formative years.

The success of Rattlesnake opened the door to numerous other productions, allowing Duru to demonstrate his versatility across different genres and character types.

Over the years, he appeared in films including Ugly Bird, Abigail’s Memoir, Blood Vessel, The Locals, The Good Husband, Mboputa, Why Not?, Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons, Who Killed Chief?, Lipstick, Mortuary Gate, Stigma, Home in Exile and Nnenda, among others.

More than an actor

Duru’s contribution to Nollywood extended beyond acting. He was also involved in the administration and development of the industry.

In 2010, he served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, taking on a leadership responsibility at a time when the guild remained an important platform for addressing issues affecting performers.

He was also recognised for his contribution to society and the entertainment industry. In 2007, he received a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award for his influence on young people.

His acting ability also earned him award recognition. In 2010, he was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.

A decade later, he won Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

Family confirms death after brief illness

Details surrounding the illness that led to Duru’s death have not been publicly disclosed by his family.

His death is particularly striking because it comes months after he publicly rejected reports that he was seriously ill.

In June 2026, concern spread on social media after footage showing the actor looking frail circulated online. Duru subsequently responded to the reports, describing the material as false and malicious.

He criticised those responsible for circulating misleading information about his health and also raised concerns about the use of artificial intelligence to manipulate images and videos of public figures.

At the time, he sought to reassure the public that the reports did not accurately represent his condition.

His eventual death has therefore come as a shock to many who had followed his career and his public response to those earlier reports.

Channels Television reported, citing a family source, that Duru died at about 10 p.m. on Thursday at the National Hospital in Abuja. However, the family’s official announcement only referred to a brief illness and did not publicly provide further medical details.

A painful loss for the family

Duru’s death also comes two years after the actor suffered the devastating loss of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024.

The death of his son was a deeply painful moment for the actor and his family. Duru had publicly described the teenager with affectionate words while mourning him.

The actor had been married to his wife, Adokiye, since 2003 after the two reportedly met while they were students at the University of Port Harcourt. They had four children together.

The loss of Duru now leaves his wife and children grieving once again, while colleagues across the entertainment industry remember his contribution to Nigerian cinema.

Nollywood colleagues pay tribute

News of Duru’s death prompted tributes from several of his colleagues.

Actors Guild of Nigeria President Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu described him as a great thespian while announcing his passing.

“Another great thespian is gone. Rest in peace, Francis Duru,” the guild said in its tribute.

Veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo also mourned Duru, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most flexible and prolific performers.

Other actors and filmmakers joined the tributes, recalling his professionalism, talent and contribution to the growth of Nollywood.

Desmond Elliot described Duru as a “true thespian” in his tribute, while other members of the industry expressed sadness over the loss of a colleague who had spent decades contributing to Nigerian entertainment. (Punch Newspapers)

The reaction reflects the place Duru occupied within an industry that has undergone enormous changes since he started acting.

A legacy that will remain

Francis Duru belonged to a generation of actors who helped establish Nollywood as a major force in African entertainment.

From his early appearances in the late 1980s to his breakthrough in Rattlesnake and his subsequent work across film and theatre, he remained active for more than three decades.

His portrayal of Ahanna remains particularly significant because Rattlesnake became one of the productions associated with Nollywood’s rise during the 1990s. The character would later be revisited in the 2020 remake, Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story, although Duru’s original performance remained a memorable part of the film’s history.

Beyond individual roles, his career reflected the evolution of Nigerian cinema itself. He worked through the period when home-video productions dominated the industry and continued performing as Nollywood moved toward more sophisticated productions and international recognition.

His death at 57 therefore represents not only the loss of an accomplished performer but also the passing of one of the familiar figures from an important generation of Nigerian actors.

As tributes continue to come in from colleagues and fans, Francis Duru’s work will remain part of the history of Nollywood.

Funeral arrangements had not been announced by the family at the time of this report.

May his soul rest in peace.
