Marseille Hold On After Dramatic Second-Half Collapse

Marseille secured a third consecutive Ligue 1 victory on Sunday evening, defeating Le Havre 4-3 in a thrilling encounter at the Stade Vélodrome.

What looked like a comfortable victory for Bruno Genesio’s side turned into a nervy finish after Le Havre scored three times during the final stages of the contest. Marseille had established a commanding 4-0 advantage by the 55th minute, only for their opponents to suddenly find a way back into the match.

CJ Egan-Riley, Timothy Weah, Igor Paixão and Himad Abdelli were all on target for Marseille, while Josh Maja scored twice for Le Havre and Lamine N’Diaye added another.

The result gives Marseille three important points, but the manner in which they conceded their advantage will leave Genesio with plenty to address.

According to the match statistics, Marseille finished with 53 percent possession and registered 11 shots, including five on target. Le Havre, despite having less of the ball, produced 22 attempts and seven shots on target, showing how dangerous they became as the match progressed.

Egan-Riley Gives Marseille Early Advantage

Marseille needed only five minutes to break the deadlock.

A corner situation created an opportunity for Emerson to deliver into the danger area, and CJ Egan-Riley reacted quickest to send his header beyond the Le Havre goalkeeper.

The early goal immediately put Marseille in control and allowed the hosts to dictate the rhythm of the opening period. Le Havre struggled to create a clear response as Marseille continued to find space in the attacking areas.

The home side eventually doubled its advantage in the 33rd minute.

Timothy Weah finished from inside the box after being set up by Igor Paixão, giving Marseille a 2-0 lead heading into the interval. The goal capped a strong first-half performance from the hosts, who looked increasingly comfortable as the game progressed.

Le Havre entered the break needing a major change in approach, while Marseille appeared to have one hand on another league victory.

Paixão and Abdelli Put Marseille Four Goals Ahead

The second half initially followed the same pattern.

Five minutes after the restart, Marseille added a third.

Igor Paixão finished clinically after Amine Gouiri helped create the opening, giving the Brazilian his reward for another influential attacking display.

The goal pushed Marseille three goals clear and put Le Havre in a difficult position.

Just five minutes later, the hosts struck again.

Himad Abdelli found the net in the 55th minute, completing a rapid spell of dominance that saw Marseille move 4-0 ahead. Abdelli had already been involved in the build-up to Paixão’s goal, and his own finish gave him a direct contribution to Marseille’s commanding position.

At 4-0, the match seemed effectively decided.

But Le Havre refused to disappear.

Maja Starts Incredible Le Havre Comeback

The visitors began to exploit spaces as Marseille became increasingly vulnerable.

Their breakthrough arrived in the 77th minute when Josh Maja converted a penalty to reduce the deficit to 4-1.

That goal changed the atmosphere around the stadium.

Instead of protecting a comfortable victory, Marseille suddenly had to deal with a Le Havre side playing with renewed belief. The visitors pushed forward and continued searching for opportunities, while the hosts found themselves under increasing pressure.

Le Havre scored again in the 86th minute.

Lamine N’Diaye headed home to make it 4-2, giving the visitors genuine hope of completing what would have been an extraordinary comeback.

Three minutes later, Maja struck again.

The striker completed his brace in the 89th minute, cutting Marseille’s advantage to just one goal. What had been a four-goal lead suddenly became a desperate fight for survival.

Le Havre continued to attack during stoppage time, forcing Marseille to defend deep and protect their narrow advantage. There were further moments of tension inside the home penalty area, but the hosts managed to prevent the visitors from finding the equalizer.

When the final whistle arrived, Marseille could finally celebrate.

Marseille’s Victory Comes With a Warning

The three points are extremely valuable for Marseille, particularly given their recent league form.

However, the final 15 minutes will be a major concern for Genesio. His team had complete control of the contest for long periods but allowed Le Havre to turn a 4-0 deficit into a one-goal game.

The statistics underline the difference between the two sides. Marseille were more efficient with their opportunities, while Le Havre generated considerably more shots. The visitors finished with 22 attempts compared with Marseille’s 11, including seven efforts on target. (Football Mania)

That means Marseille cannot simply look at the scoreline and assume the performance was flawless.

Their attacking efficiency was excellent, but their defensive concentration deteriorated badly once Le Havre gained momentum.

Still, Marseille showed enough quality in the first 60 minutes to explain why they came away with the victory. Egan-Riley’s early header provided the foundation, Weah added another, Paixão continued his impressive attacking contribution and Abdelli delivered an important goal.

The victory also extends Marseille’s unbeaten run in their recent Ligue 1 campaign and keeps them moving in the right direction after a difficult period.

Man of the Match: Himad Abdelli

Himad Abdelli was Marseille’s standout performer and deserves the Man of the Match recognition for his contribution to the victory.

The Algerian midfielder played an important role in Marseille’s strongest spell of the game. His movement between the lines caused problems for Le Havre, while his technical ability allowed him to operate effectively in dangerous areas.

Abdelli was involved in the build-up to Paixão’s goal before finding the net himself five minutes later. His contribution helped Marseille establish what appeared to be an unassailable four-goal advantage.

His goal was also his third in eight Ligue 1 appearances this season, underlining the growing importance of his attacking contribution to Genesio’s side. Foot Mercato selected Abdelli as its Man of the Match and highlighted his influence in both the third and fourth goals.

Although Josh Maja’s two goals made him one of the biggest talking points of the second half, Abdelli’s influence during Marseille’s dominant period was crucial to the result.

His performance showed why Marseille can benefit from having a midfielder capable of combining creativity, movement and goalscoring ability.

Marseille Take the Points, But Must Learn From the Finish

Marseille will be delighted to have collected all three points, but the dramatic ending ensures this will not be remembered as a routine victory.

The hosts had everything under control at 4-0 before Le Havre exposed weaknesses that could prove costly against stronger opposition.

For now, however, Marseille can focus on the positives.

They scored four goals, produced another impressive attacking display and secured their third straight Ligue 1 victory.

The challenge for Genesio will be ensuring that the final stages against Le Havre serve as a lesson rather than the beginning of another problem.

Marseille got the job done at the Vélodrome. But after turning a four-goal lead into a one-goal finish, they know there is still work to do.
