Inter Miami suffered a frustrating 2-0 defeat to the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night, bringing an end to their impressive run of results and leaving the Herons with plenty to reflect on as the MLS regular season approaches its decisive stage.

Miami arrived at Sports Illustrated Stadium in strong form after winning their previous three matches by a combined 9-1 scoreline. However, the Herons were unable to reproduce that attacking sharpness against a determined Red Bulls side that defended with discipline and punished Miami at crucial moments.

The result was particularly disappointing for Inter Miami given their recent record against New York. Miami had gone unbeaten in their previous four meetings with the Red Bulls, winning three and drawing one while scoring 17 goals across those matches.

This time, though, the game followed a very different script.

Early setback puts Miami on the back foot

Inter Miami’s problems began just seven minutes into the contest when Carlos Casimiro inadvertently put the ball into his own net, giving the Red Bulls an early advantage.

The goal was not the start Miami wanted, especially against a New York team fighting to remain above the Eastern Conference playoff line. The early setback forced the Herons to chase the game while the hosts gained confidence from taking the lead.

Miami attempted to respond, but the Red Bulls remained organised and made it difficult for the visitors to find clear openings.

The hosts were willing to surrender possession at times and rely on their defensive structure before looking for opportunities in transition. That approach frustrated Miami, who struggled to turn periods of possession into the kind of dangerous chances that have been a feature of their attacking play throughout the season.

Messi enters after halftime

One of the major talking points before the match was Lionel Messi’s limited involvement.

Messi began the game on the bench and was introduced in the 56th minute, replacing Riquelme Fillipi as Miami looked for a way back into the contest.

The Argentine’s arrival naturally changed the atmosphere around the match. Messi entered with 25 MLS goals this season, five more than any other player entering the weekend, while his 15 assists had him level with Los Angeles FC’s Son Heung-min at the top of the league’s assist standings.

His presence gave Miami another creative outlet, but the Red Bulls continued to defend effectively and prevented the Herons from turning their possession into a decisive breakthrough.

Miami needed greater urgency in the final third, but New York remained compact and continued to make the spaces around the penalty area difficult to exploit.

Red Bulls punish Miami late

With the game still within reach, Inter Miami remained in contention of finding an equaliser.

Instead, the Red Bulls delivered the decisive blow in the opening minute of second-half stoppage time.

Emil Forsberg, who had come off the bench in the 85th minute, found the net to double New York’s advantage and effectively settle the contest.

The Swedish forward finished after Cameron Harper and Ronald Donkor combined to create the opportunity. It was Forsberg’s fourth goal of the season and his first since August 15.

For Miami, the goal was especially frustrating because it came at a stage when the team had little time left to respond.

The second goal also reflected one of the main problems Inter Miami encountered throughout the evening: New York did not need overwhelming possession to create danger. The Red Bulls were efficient when opportunities presented themselves and remained composed in the important moments.

St. Clair keeps Miami in the contest

Despite the defeat, Inter Miami had one player who stood out throughout the evening.

Dayne St. Clair was Miami’s Man of the Match, producing several important saves to prevent the scoreline from becoming even more damaging.

The goalkeeper finished with five saves, repeatedly giving his teammates an opportunity to remain within touching distance of the Red Bulls.

St. Clair’s performance was particularly important because New York created enough opportunities to put further pressure on Miami’s defence. His reactions and positioning helped keep the visitors alive deep into the second half.

Although he could not prevent the Red Bulls from finding the net twice, St. Clair was one of Miami’s most reliable performers on a difficult night.

His display also highlighted the difference between the two sides. While Miami struggled to find the finishing touch at the attacking end, St. Clair continued to make the necessary interventions at the other.

A frustrating night for the Herons

The defeat ended a positive spell for Inter Miami, who had entered the match with considerable momentum.

Miami had won their previous three games in October and appeared to be building toward the postseason in impressive fashion. Saturday’s result, however, showed that even a team with the attacking quality of the Herons can be punished when early mistakes and missed opportunities combine.

The loss also prevented Miami from extending their strong recent record against New York.

For the Red Bulls, the victory was hugely significant. They entered the match sitting on the edge of the Eastern Conference playoff picture and needed points to strengthen their postseason hopes. Their performance delivered exactly that.

For Inter Miami, the priority now is to respond rather than dwell on the result.

Miami must respond quickly

The Herons will not have long to think about the defeat.

Inter Miami return to action on Wednesday when they host FC Cincinnati, giving the team an immediate opportunity to bounce back.

The challenge will be to rediscover the attacking rhythm that had produced nine goals across their previous three victories while tightening up defensively.

The defeat in New Jersey was not the result Miami wanted, but the season is far from over. With the playoffs approaching, the response to this setback could be more important than the defeat itself.

The Herons have already shown throughout the campaign that they possess the quality to compete with the best teams in MLS. Now, they must turn that quality into another strong run of results.

For a team with ambitions of making a deep postseason push, Wednesday’s meeting with Cincinnati offers the perfect opportunity to put this disappointing night behind them.

Man of the Match: Dayne St. Clair — Inter Miami

St. Clair earns the honour despite Miami’s defeat after producing five saves and keeping the Herons competitive for long periods. His performance prevented the Red Bulls from building a bigger advantage and was one of the few major positives Inter Miami could take from a difficult night in New Jersey.
