Noni Madueke Strikes Late as Arsenal Beat Nottingham Forest to Return to Second
Noni Madueke came off the bench to score the decisive goal as Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, moving the Gunners back above Brighton into second place.

Arsenal Edge Nottingham Forest as Madueke Delivers Late Winner
Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a narrow 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Sunday, with substitute Noni Madueke scoring the decisive goal late in the second half.
The result was particularly important for Mikel Arteta’s side after Brighton had temporarily moved above them in the Premier League table following their emphatic 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace earlier in the day. Arsenal’s victory means the reigning champions move back into second place and continue to keep pressure on league leaders Manchester City.
It was far from Arsenal’s most convincing performance, but the Gunners showed the type of resilience that can prove valuable over the course of a title race.
Forest made life extremely difficult for the visitors, defending in a compact shape and limiting the amount of space available to Arsenal’s midfield and forwards. For long periods, Arteta’s side struggled to find the creativity needed to break through the hosts’ defensive structure.
Forest Frustrate Arsenal
Arsenal started with David Raya in goal, while Ben White, Ezri Konsa, Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori formed the defensive line. Declan Rice and Bruno Guimarães operated in midfield, with Martin Ødegaard, Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze supporting Kai Havertz in attack.
Nottingham Forest were without Morgan Gibbs-White, who missed the game through injury. Nicolás Domínguez came into the starting lineup, while Jair Cunha also returned to the team.
The first half produced very little in terms of clear-cut opportunities.
Forest were disciplined without the ball, with their players closing down the central areas and forcing Arsenal to circulate possession across the pitch. The Gunners had plenty of the ball but struggled to turn their dominance into meaningful chances.
Neither team managed to register a shot on target during the opening 45 minutes, underlining just how difficult it was for either attack to find a way through.
Forest’s Liam Delap provided some physical presence up front, while James McAtee and Dan Ndoye attempted to give the home side an outlet whenever they recovered possession.
Arsenal, meanwhile, looked short of the attacking spark required to unlock a Forest defence that was increasingly comfortable with the way the game was developing.
Arteta Turns to Madueke
With Arsenal unable to find a breakthrough, Arteta made a change at half-time, bringing Noni Madueke on for Eberechi Eze.
The substitution immediately gave Arsenal another dimension on the flank. Madueke offered pace, direct running and a willingness to attack defenders, something the Gunners had been missing during the opening period.
Arteta continued to make changes as he looked for a solution, introducing fresh legs as Arsenal attempted to increase the pressure on Forest.
The hosts remained stubborn, however, and Arsenal continued to struggle to create a clean opening.
As the match moved into its final stages, it appeared increasingly likely that Forest would hold out for a point.
Madueke Breaks the Deadlock
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 80th minute.
Madueke collected the ball on the left before moving inside and taking on Daniel Muñoz. The Arsenal winger created enough room to get a shot away, sending a low effort towards the Forest goal.
The strike took a crucial deflection off Forest defender Jair Cunha, changing the direction of the ball and leaving goalkeeper Matz Sels wrong-footed.
The ball found the back of the net and Arsenal suddenly had the lead.
It was Madueke’s moment, and his impact from the bench proved decisive. Arsenal had struggled for much of the afternoon, but the England international’s introduction ultimately changed the game.
Forest Push for an Equaliser
Forest refused to give up after conceding.
The home side pushed forward during the closing stages and attempted to put Arsenal under pressure, knowing that one chance could be enough to rescue a point.
There were opportunities for Forest, including late moments involving Murillo and Delap, but the hosts were unable to produce the finishing touch required to beat Raya.
Arsenal managed the final stages professionally, keeping possession when possible and defending their narrow advantage.
The Gunners eventually saw out the match to claim all three points.
Madueke Named Man of the Match
Noni Madueke was named Player of the Match after his decisive contribution from the bench.
The winger played only part of the match but made the moment that ultimately decided the contest. His ability to carry the ball forward and create a shooting opportunity gave Arsenal the attacking spark they had lacked for much of the afternoon.
Most importantly, his effort found the net, albeit with the help of a deflection, and secured three points for the champions.
Madueke’s performance also highlighted the importance of Arsenal’s squad depth. With Arteta able to introduce a player of his quality from the bench, the Gunners had another option when their starting attack struggled to make an impact.
Arsenal Back Above Brighton
The victory lifts Arsenal back into second place after Brighton’s earlier demolition of Crystal Palace.
Brighton had temporarily moved above the Gunners with their 5-0 victory, but Arsenal responded by doing what they needed to do at the City Ground.
The performance may not have been spectacular, but the result could prove significant in the context of the title race.
Arsenal remain within three points of Manchester City, according to reports following Sunday’s action, keeping the pressure on the league leaders.
For Nottingham Forest, the defeat continues a frustrating period in front of goal. They struggled to seriously trouble Arsenal and remain among the teams fighting for better results after a difficult start.
For Arsenal, however, the most important thing was the three points.
The Gunners will know they must improve offensively, particularly with a Champions League challenge against Bayern Munich coming up. But on an afternoon when their attacking football failed to reach its usual level, they found another way to win.
Madueke provided the difference, Arsenal took the points, and the champions returned to second place.
The result also gives Arsenal another important boost as the Premier League season continues.
