FC Porto Edge Past Gil Vicente as Borja Sainz Seals Ninth Straight League Win
FC Porto maintained their perfect start to the Primeira Liga season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Gil Vicente, with Borja Sainz scoring the decisive goal and earning Man of the Match honours.

FC Porto continued their remarkable start to the 2026/27 Primeira Liga campaign after securing a narrow 1-0 victory away to Gil Vicente at the Estádio Cidade de Barcelos on Saturday night.
The result extended Porto’s winning run to nine league matches, keeping their perfect record intact. It was not their most convincing performance of the campaign, but Francesco Farioli’s side showed enough control and composure to leave Barcelos with all three points.
The only goal arrived in the second half through Borja Sainz, who produced the decisive moment in the 63rd minute. The Spanish attacker reacted quickly inside the area before sending a low effort beyond Gil Vicente goalkeeper Lucão.
Sainz’s strike proved to be the difference in a contest where both teams had periods of pressure. Porto finished with 58 per cent possession compared with Gil Vicente’s 42 per cent, while the visitors also registered more attempts overall.
The opening 45 minutes ended goalless, with neither side able to find the breakthrough. Porto had opportunities to threaten but lacked the final touch needed to turn their possession into a goal.
Gil Vicente remained organised and made the game uncomfortable for the league leaders. The hosts were willing to defend in numbers and looked for opportunities to attack whenever they won possession.
Porto, however, gradually increased their influence after the interval. Their greater control eventually paid off when Sainz found the back of the net.
The goal gave the visitors something to protect, and Gil Vicente responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Their best efforts forced Porto’s defence and goalkeeper Diogo Costa to remain alert during the closing stages.
The match statistics reflected Porto’s overall advantage. The Dragons recorded 12 total shots compared with Gil Vicente’s 10, while they managed four attempts on target against two from the hosts.
Porto also had five shots blocked, showing that Gil Vicente’s defenders were prepared to throw themselves in front of efforts to prevent further damage.
The home side had four attempts inside the box, while Porto registered seven. Gil Vicente also tried to threaten from distance, but Porto generally did enough to prevent the hosts from creating a clear route back into the contest.
One of the biggest moments of the closing stages came when Gil Vicente were reduced to 10 men.
Marvin Elimbi was shown a straight red card in the 84th minute after a foul on Pepê as the Porto winger threatened to break forward. The dismissal made Gil Vicente’s task even more difficult during the final minutes.
Despite being a man down, Gil Vicente continued to compete and refused to completely abandon their attacking approach. Murilo Souza came close to producing an equaliser when his long-range effort forced Diogo Costa into a difficult save, with the Porto goalkeeper turning the ball behind for a corner.
Porto ultimately managed the remaining minutes professionally. Rather than taking unnecessary risks, the visitors focused on maintaining their advantage and ensuring that Gil Vicente could not find the late equaliser.
The victory was particularly important for Porto after recent disappointment in European competition. Their domestic form has remained exceptional, and this result provided another reminder of their ability to grind out victories even when their football is not at its most fluent.
With nine wins from nine league matches, Porto have collected a maximum 27 points. The run also represents their best start to a Portuguese league season in decades, highlighting just how impressive their opening stretch has been.
Borja Sainz Named Man of the Match
Borja Sainz was the clear standout performer in Barcelos after scoring the goal that decided the contest.
The winger was not initially expected to start the match, but an injury to Oskar Pietuszewski opened the door for him to feature from the beginning. Sainz took full advantage of the opportunity, delivering the moment that ultimately earned Porto another three points.
His 63rd-minute goal was his fourth of the Primeira Liga campaign and his 11th for Porto since joining the club, underlining his growing importance to the team.
The goal itself demonstrated his ability to remain alert inside the penalty area. After the ball fell into a dangerous position following a defensive clearance, Sainz reacted quickly and sent a low shot toward the far side of the goal, leaving Lucão unable to prevent it from crossing the line.
Beyond the goal, his movement provided Porto with another attacking outlet. He helped stretch the Gil Vicente defence and offered the visitors a threat whenever they moved forward.
His performance was recognised by multiple match assessments. ZeroZero selected Sainz as the best player on the pitch, highlighting that he had been given an unexpected starting opportunity and responded by scoring the decisive goal.
Sainz was eventually substituted in the 72nd minute, with Santiago Giménez coming on as Porto looked to manage the final stages of the match. By then, his job had already been done.
Speaking after the game, Sainz expressed his happiness at contributing to the victory and dedicated the win and his individual award to his mother, who died several months ago. He also praised the unity within the Porto squad despite their recent struggles in the Champions League.
Porto Keep Rolling
For Gil Vicente, the defeat will be frustrating because they managed to remain competitive for long periods and limited Porto to a single goal.
For Porto, however, the most important part of the evening was the result.
The Dragons did not need to produce a spectacular performance. Instead, they showed patience, found their opening through Sainz and protected the advantage until the final whistle.
Their perfect league record remains intact after nine matches, and the latest victory further strengthens their position at the top of the Primeira Liga.
There is still room for improvement in Porto’s performances, particularly in terms of turning possession into clearer chances, but their ability to collect maximum points while not playing at their best could prove valuable as the season develops.
Against Gil Vicente, one moment of quality from Borja Sainz was enough.
Porto now leave Barcelos with another three points, another clean-sheet victory and another chapter added to an extraordinary start to the league campaign.
