Boston Celtics Demolish Charlotte Hornets 119-80 as Jayson Tatum Delivers 34-Point Masterclass
The Boston Celtics produced a commanding performance against the Charlotte Hornets, securing a 119-80 victory in NBA Cup group play. Jayson Tatum led the visitors with 34 points, eight rebounds and nine assists as Boston continued its impressive start to the competition.

The Boston Celtics delivered a commanding performance on the road, overpowering the Charlotte Hornets 119-80 in their NBA Cup group-stage meeting on Friday night. Boston set the tone early, built a huge advantage before half-time and maintained control throughout the contest to secure a convincing 39-point victory at the Spectrum Center.
Jayson Tatum was the central figure in the Celtics’ dominant display, finishing with 34 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. His all-round contribution helped Boston improve to 2-0 in NBA Cup play, while Charlotte slipped to 0-2 in the group.
Boston Establish Control from the Opening Quarter
The Celtics wasted little time showing their intentions. They attacked with pace, moved the ball confidently and found open looks from the perimeter, leaving Charlotte struggling to settle into the game.
Tatum led the early surge with 18 points in the first period. Derrick White also made an immediate impact, adding 10 points in the opening quarter as the visitors repeatedly punished Charlotte’s defensive lapses.
Boston’s three-point shooting was particularly damaging. The Celtics connected on nine of their 17 attempts from long range in the first quarter, forcing the Hornets to cover more ground and opening space for drives and cuts.
The second quarter brought little relief for the home side. Boston continued to score freely, adding another 30 points before the interval, while Charlotte managed 19. The Celtics went into half-time with a 70-39 advantage.
Boston’s first-half perimeter numbers underlined the difference between the teams. The visitors made 17 of 31 three-point attempts before the break, tying a franchise record for the most three-pointers made in a first half. The Hornets, by contrast, struggled to generate clean looks and were unable to slow the visitors’ rhythm.
Tatum Leads a Complete Celtics Effort
Although Tatum attracted most of the attention, Boston’s success was not built around one player alone. White finished with 18 points and five assists, providing another dependable scoring option and helping the Celtics maintain their offensive flow.
Tatum’s performance, however, stood above the rest. He finished with nine assists, the highest total in the game, and was also Boston’s leading rebounder with eight. He recorded his 34 points in only 29 minutes, allowing the Celtics to manage his workload once the result was effectively beyond doubt.
The forward scored 18 points in the opening period and helped create 30 points for Boston through his scoring and assists. He consistently read the defence and made the right decisions when Charlotte attempted to close down his opportunities.
Tatum also showed composure at the free-throw line, making all 11 attempts. That accuracy ensured Charlotte could not benefit from sending him to the line.
Hornets Struggle to Respond
Charlotte never managed to build the kind of sustained run required to make the contest competitive. The hosts scored 18 points in the third quarter, while Boston added 26 to extend the margin further.
The Hornets did produce a more balanced fourth quarter, with both teams scoring 23 points, but the improvement came too late to change the outcome. Boston had already built a lead of as many as 46 points.
Naz Reid led Charlotte with 14 points, making him the Hornets’ top scorer on a difficult evening. He also collected six rebounds and added two assists, but his effort was not enough to give the hosts the offensive support they needed.
Tidjane Salaün added 13 points and Sion James scored 11, but the Hornets lacked a consistent scoring threat. Charlotte shot only 29.3 per cent from the field and made 11 of 50 attempts from three-point range.
The home side also had to manage personnel problems. Charlotte entered the game without Kon Knueppel and Moussa Diabaté, while Brandon Miller left during the first half with right groin soreness and did not return. Losing Miller further reduced the Hornets’ options as they attempted to find an answer to Boston’s scoring.
A Significant Result in the NBA Cup Race
The result carries importance beyond the margin of victory. Boston moved to 2-0 in NBA Cup group play and strengthened its position in the race to reach the knockout rounds.
The Celtics had already produced a strong result in their opening Cup fixture, and the win over Charlotte gave them a combined point differential of plus-53 across their first two games.
Boston’s ability to build such a substantial lead also reflects the standard it has shown in the competition so far. Its offensive movement, outside shooting and defensive discipline have made the team difficult to contain.
For Charlotte, the situation is considerably more difficult. The Hornets are now 0-2 in the group and have lost six consecutive games overall.
Their immediate concern will be to address the defensive issues exposed by Boston and find more consistency at the other end of the court. The absence of key players has complicated matters, but the team will need a stronger collective response if it hopes to recover its form.
The Celtics, meanwhile, can take confidence from the balance of their performance. Their perimeter shooting was outstanding, their ball movement created opportunities throughout the game and their defence kept Charlotte from establishing any rhythm.
Jayson Tatum Named Man of the Match
Jayson Tatum was the clear choice for Man of the Match after producing the most influential individual display on the court.
His 34 points led every player, while his eight rebounds and nine assists demonstrated how much he contributed beyond scoring. He also shot 9-of-16 from the field, hit five three-pointers and converted all 11 of his free throws.
His early scoring burst gave Boston the platform for its commanding lead, and his playmaking ensured the Celtics continued to create quality chances for teammates.
Tatum’s contribution was particularly impressive considering he played only 29 minutes. His performance demonstrated his importance to Boston’s offensive system and showed why he remains one of the team’s most influential players.
Boston will look to carry this level of execution into its next assignment as it pursues progress in the NBA Cup. Charlotte must regroup quickly, particularly with its losing streak continuing and questions surrounding the availability of key players.
On this evidence, the Celtics are moving through the group stage with authority, while the Hornets have significant work to do.
