The Los Angeles Lakers produced an impressive comeback to defeat the Portland Trail Blazers 124-118 at Crypto.com Arena, with Luka Dončić delivering a remarkable 53-point performance to lead the hosts to their fourth consecutive victory.

Portland looked firmly in control for long periods and built a 16-point advantage in the first half. However, the Lakers found another level after the break, turning the contest around with a powerful third-quarter display before holding off a late challenge from the visitors. The result also gave Los Angeles a measure of revenge after Portland had beaten them 136-129 in their previous meeting on October 27.

Dončić was the clear difference between the teams. The Slovenian guard finished with 53 points, five rebounds and five assists, shooting 17 of 33 from the field. His scoring kept the Lakers within reach when their offence struggled early, and he took charge when the game reached its decisive stages. It was his 11th career game with at least 50 points and his fourth such performance in a Lakers uniform.

Portland Make the Stronger Start

The Trail Blazers began with confidence and took advantage of a Lakers side that could not find its rhythm from long range. Los Angeles missed its first 15 attempts from beyond the three-point line, allowing Portland to settle into the game and build an early cushion.

The visitors won the opening quarter 29-20, putting pressure on the Lakers to respond. Portland continued to find ways to score in the second period, with Deni Avdija and Damian Lillard providing important contributions. Their movement and shot-making helped the Blazers maintain their advantage even as Dončić tried to keep the home side close.

Los Angeles did receive a lift just before half-time. With the clock running down, Dončić launched a shot from around 61 feet and watched it drop through the basket at the buzzer. The remarkable long-range effort gave the crowd something to celebrate, although the Lakers still went into the interval trailing 60-53.

Lakers Take Control After the Break

The third quarter changed the direction of the game. Los Angeles came out with greater urgency on both ends of the floor, moving the ball more effectively and applying pressure that disrupted Portland’s attacking rhythm. The Lakers outscored the visitors 34-15 in the period, turning a seven-point half-time deficit into an 87-75 lead.

Dončić supplied 20 points in the third quarter alone, scoring with the confidence and variety that have defined his recent run. He attacked the basket, created opportunities from the perimeter and punished defensive mistakes. Portland struggled to contain him as the Lakers began to find support from the players around their leading scorer.

The decisive stretch included a 17-0 Lakers run that completely shifted the momentum. Portland, which had looked comfortable for much of the opening half, suddenly found itself chasing the game. Los Angeles’ improved defensive work also mattered: the hosts forced difficult possessions and made the Blazers work harder for clean looks.

The Lakers carried their advantage into the fourth quarter and briefly stretched it to 16 points. Their 32-11 run across the late third quarter and early fourth gave them a strong position, but Portland refused to let the contest slip away without a fight.

Portland Fight Back, But Lakers Hold Firm

The Trail Blazers responded with a determined fourth-quarter effort, scoring 43 points in the final period. Their renewed aggression brought them back into contention and cut the Lakers’ lead to four, creating a tense finish inside the arena.

Avdija remained central to Portland’s efforts, finishing with 22 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds. His ability to score and involve teammates gave the visitors a route back into the contest. Lillard also contributed 22 points, helping Portland maintain pressure as the clock ran down.

However, the Lakers had the answers when the game was on the line. Dončić delivered a crucial floater in the lane with 27.7 seconds remaining to restore some breathing room. Austin Reaves then helped close out the victory, and the Lakers combined to score 10 points in the final seconds as Portland searched for another opening.

Reaves finished with 25 points, providing valuable support to Dončić despite an uneven shooting night. Walker Kessler added 16 points and 12 rebounds, recording a double-double that gave Los Angeles an important presence around the basket. Those contributions helped the Lakers survive Portland’s late push and protect the result.

Dončić Earns Player of the Game Honours

Dončić was unquestionably the standout performer and the natural choice for Player of the Game. His 53 points were not simply a product of a strong start; he carried the Lakers through their difficult stretches, sparked the comeback and produced the key score that helped settle the result.

The numbers underlined his influence. He made 17 of his 33 field-goal attempts and added five assists and five rebounds. More importantly, his third-quarter burst came at the moment Los Angeles needed a change in momentum. Portland had controlled the first half, but Dončić’s scoring turned the game into one the Lakers could dictate.

The performance also extended an extraordinary personal scoring sequence. It was his fourth consecutive game with at least 40 points and his seventh straight outing with 35 or more. He has now recorded 50 points 11 times in his career, tying him for 10th on the NBA’s all-time list, while his latest display added to a remarkable start to the campaign.

Reaves deserves recognition for his 25 points and late-game contribution, while Kessler’s 16 points and 12 rebounds provided balance. For Portland, Avdija’s near triple-double and Lillard’s scoring were notable, but neither could match Dončić’s decisive influence.

What the Result Means

The victory moved the Lakers to 8-2 and extended their winning streak to four games. It also improved their record to 1-1 in NBA Cup group play. Having lost to Portland in October, Los Angeles will take confidence from the way it recovered from a sizeable deficit and managed the closing moments under pressure.

Portland, meanwhile, saw a three-game winning streak come to an end and finished its four-game road trip with a defeat. The Blazers can take encouragement from the way they started and from their response in the fourth quarter, but the 17-0 run proved costly. Their 24 turnovers also made it difficult to maintain control once the Lakers increased their defensive intensity.

The Lakers will now travel to face the Detroit Pistons, while Portland returns home to meet the San Antonio Spurs. Los Angeles will take confidence from the way it recovered from a sizeable deficit and managed the closing moments under pressure. Portland must find a way to sustain its first-half quality across four quarters.

The Lakers showed the resilience required to win a close contest against a confident opponent. Dončić supplied the headline numbers, but the comeback was built on a dominant third quarter, improved defence and timely help from Reaves and Kessler. Portland made them work until the final minute, yet Los Angeles had enough composure to finish the job.
