Manchester United Complete Stunning Comeback to Beat Roma 3-2 as Matheus Cunha Scores Dramatic Brace
Manchester United produced a remarkable second-half comeback at Old Trafford, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat AS Roma 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League. Matheus Cunha scored twice to complete the turnaround, although his night ended with a red card in stoppage time.

Manchester United Fight Back from Two Goals Down to Beat Roma 3–2
Manchester United delivered one of their most dramatic European nights in recent seasons, recovering from two goals down to defeat AS Roma 3–2 at Old Trafford in the UEFA Champions League league phase on Tuesday. A difficult first half left the home side facing another damaging result, but a determined response after the interval changed the contest. Bruno Fernandes started the comeback from the penalty spot before Matheus Cunha struck twice late in the game to complete a memorable turnaround.
The result was especially important for United, who had arrived under pressure after a run of nine matches without a win. For Roma, the defeat was a painful one after they had established a two-goal advantage and appeared well placed to take control of the evening.
Roma Make Early Pressure Count
The visitors began with confidence and took the lead in the 11th minute through Matías Soulé. Rodrigo Mora supplied the pass, and Soulé made the most of the opportunity to put Roma ahead. The goal exposed United’s vulnerability in the opening stages and gave the Italian side an early platform from which to build.
Roma doubled their advantage six minutes later. Donyell Malen converted a penalty in the 17th minute after United were penalised for a handball inside the area. At 2–0, the visitors had turned their bright start into a commanding position, while the home crowd was left anxious about the direction of the match.
United had possession during spells of the first half, but that control did not translate into enough clear chances. Roma were more decisive when opportunities appeared and defended with discipline once they moved in front. The hosts struggled to find a rhythm in the final third, and the half-time whistle arrived with United trailing by two goals.
The Response After the Break
United returned for the second half with greater urgency. Their passing became quicker, the attacking players looked more willing to take risks, and Roma were forced to spend longer periods defending. The hosts needed a goal to give the crowd something to believe in, and their opportunity came from the penalty spot.
Bruno Fernandes stepped forward in the 58th minute and converted to reduce the deficit to 2–1. The penalty was retaken after the initial attempt was ruled out, allowing the United captain another opportunity. He kept his composure and sent the ball into the net, giving his side a route back into the contest.
That goal changed the atmosphere at Old Trafford. United began to play with greater belief, while Roma could no longer manage the game with the same comfort they had enjoyed in the first half. Roma still threatened when space opened up, but United had seized the initiative and pushed forward.
Cunha Turns the Game Around
The decisive spell arrived in the closing stages. Matheus Cunha brought United level in the 83rd minute, finishing after sustained pressure had finally unsettled Roma’s defence. The equaliser lifted the stadium and transformed the final minutes into a tense battle, with both teams aware that one more goal could decide the result.
Cunha was not finished. Just three minutes later, in the 86th minute, the Brazilian forward struck again to put United 3–2 ahead. Shea Lacey provided the assist, and Cunha took his chance with a composed finish that sent the home supporters into celebration. In the space of a few minutes, United had turned a two-goal deficit into a lead.
The comeback was made more complicated in stoppage time when Cunha was sent off. Having already been booked for celebrating his goal in the crowd, he received a second yellow card for a foul, leaving United to protect their advantage with ten men. Roma had a brief opportunity to make the numerical advantage count, but the hosts held their shape and saw out the remaining minutes.
United’s statistics reflected their stronger overall attacking output. They finished with 52 per cent possession and 15 shots, compared with Roma’s 48 per cent and seven attempts. United also registered six shots on target to Roma’s four, while the blocked-shot count was four to one.
Bruno Fernandes Named Man of the Match
Bruno Fernandes was named Man of the Match after playing a central role in United’s recovery. His penalty in the 58th minute was the turning point that gave the hosts renewed belief, but his influence extended beyond the goal. As captain, he helped drive the team’s response, demanded more urgency in possession and provided composure when the pressure was at its highest.
The Portuguese midfielder’s ability to take responsibility was important on a night when United could easily have allowed frustration to take over. After conceding twice inside the opening 17 minutes, the team needed a player capable of setting the standard and keeping the belief alive. Fernandes did that through his leadership and willingness to take the decisive penalty.
He looked to move the ball forward, connect with the attacking players and keep the team pushing towards Roma’s goal. The penalty gave United a foothold, and his overall contribution helped sustain the momentum that Cunha later turned into victory.
Cunha deserves enormous credit for scoring both late goals, but Fernandes’ award recognises the broader influence he had on the contest and the importance of his contribution to the comeback. On a night when United needed character as much as quality, their captain delivered both.
A Vital Result for Manchester United
The 3–2 victory gives United a much-needed lift after a difficult run and offers Michael Carrick and his players something positive to build on. Coming back from two goals down in a Champions League match requires resilience, concentration and belief, and the second-half display provided evidence that the squad can respond when under pressure.
United cannot afford to start future matches as slowly as they did against Roma, and conceding twice so early placed an unnecessary burden on the rest of the team. Cunha’s late dismissal is another issue, as his absence in the closing moments could have proved costly had Roma found an equaliser.
Roma, meanwhile, will regret allowing their advantage to disappear. Their first-half performance showed the threat they can pose, with Soulé and Malen both taking their opportunities. However, they were unable to maintain their defensive organisation once United increased the tempo, and the late goals punished their inability to regain control.
United had looked beaten at half-time, but Fernandes’ penalty and Cunha’s decisive double produced a result that could prove significant for their confidence and Champions League campaign. The comeback belonged to the team, but Fernandes’ leadership and contribution earned him the Man of the Match recognition.
