Norwich City produced one of their most convincing away performances of the Championship campaign as they swept Bristol City aside with a commanding 5-0 victory at Ashton Gate on Saturday, November 7.

Paris Maghoma gave the visitors the lead in the 22nd minute, before Harry Darling, Andre Brooks, substitute Jovon Makama and Mathias Kvistgaarden completed the scoring.

The result was built on Norwich’s ability to make their attacking moments count. Bristol City enjoyed slightly more possession, recording 53 per cent compared with Norwich’s 47, but the home side struggled to translate that control into clear opportunities. Norwich registered 17 attempts and seven shots on target, while Bristol managed 15 efforts with only four testing the goalkeeper.

Maghoma gives Norwich the advantage

The opening stages were not especially smooth, with both sides guilty of misplaced passes as they tried to settle into the contest. Norwich, however, looked more purposeful when space opened up, and their first goal came from a moment of direct running.

In the 22nd minute, Paris Maghoma collected the ball around 40 yards from goal and advanced without being closed down. He carried the attack into the left side of the penalty area before guiding a low right-footed finish beyond Bristol City goalkeeper Brad Collins.

Bristol City had an opportunity to respond before half-time. A long throw from George Tanner was directed into the area, where Scott Twine found himself with a promising chance from close range. His volley went straight at Norwich goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw, who made the save with his foot.

Instead, Norwich reached the break with their narrow lead intact.

One detail that stood out was the contrast between possession and penetration. Bristol City had more of the ball and attempted to build through their midfield, but Norwich were more direct whenever they recovered it. Their forwards and attacking midfielders moved quickly into spaces behind the home defence, forcing Bristol to turn and defend towards their own goal. That approach helped explain why the visitors could create the more dangerous attempts without needing to dominate possession.

Norwich take control after the interval

Bristol City made a change at half-time, bringing on Jed Wallace for Cameron Pring, and the hosts began the second period with more urgency. Jason Knight sent a header over from a corner before trying his luck again from distance.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute. A delivery into the Bristol penalty area caused problems for the home defence, and Jason Knight’s attempted header ended up directing the ball towards Harry Darling. The Norwich defender reacted quickly and nodded it over Collins to make it 2-0.

There was little time for Bristol to recover before the third goal arrived. Just three minutes later, Maghoma turned provider. He drove towards the byline and pulled the ball back into the area, where Andre Brooks met it and fired home.

Norwich continued to find openings as Bristol struggled to regain defensive organisation, with Jacob Wright, Maghoma and Anthony Musaba all threatening.

Makama and Kvistgaarden complete the rout

Norwich’s attacking depth became clear when the substitutes made an immediate contribution. Jovon Makama came on in the 66th minute and needed only four minutes to get on the scoresheet.

In the 70th minute, Anthony Musaba delivered the ball across the area, allowing Makama to turn it into the net for Norwich’s fourth.

The fifth goal arrived from the penalty spot ten minutes later. Mathias Kvistgaarden was brought down by Lisav Eissat inside the area, and the referee pointed to the spot. Kvistgaarden stepped up and converted in the 80th minute, leaving Collins with no chance and completing the 5-0 scoreline.

Dom Ballard had an effort cleared off the line towards the end, summing up a frustrating afternoon for the home side. Norwich, meanwhile, saw out the remaining minutes without allowing the result to come under threat.

The numbers behind Norwich’s win

The statistics underline how Norwich were able to dominate the important moments despite having less of the ball. Bristol City finished with 53 per cent possession, but Norwich produced more total shots and more efforts on target.

Bristol recorded more corners, with eight compared with Norwich’s three, yet they could not turn those opportunities into a goal. Norwich’s superior accuracy in front of goal made the difference.

Norwich’s five goals came from four different players, with Maghoma scoring once and assisting Brooks, while Darling, Makama and Kvistgaarden each added their names to the scoresheet. Musaba also played an important role by supplying the cross for Makama’s goal.

For Bristol City, the defeat will raise serious questions about their defensive display and their ability to respond when matches move against them. Conceding twice in three minutes early in the second half left them chasing a game that quickly slipped beyond reach. Home supporters voiced their frustration, with boos at half-time and chants directed towards head coach Michael Skubala as the scoreline widened.

Man of the Match: Harry Darling

Harry Darling deserves the Man of the Match recognition for a commanding contribution at both ends of the pitch. The Norwich defender scored the goal that made it 2-0, a moment that proved decisive in breaking Bristol City’s resistance after the interval.

His quick reaction inside the penalty area allowed him to take advantage of the loose ball and finish calmly past Collins.

Darling’s influence extended beyond his goal. He helped Norwich maintain their defensive shape and contributed to a performance that restricted Bristol to just four shots on target.

The defender’s display was also recognised in match ratings, where he was listed as the leading player and named Player of the Match.

Maghoma also had a strong case after opening the scoring and creating Brooks’ goal, while Musaba’s assist and the impact of substitute Makama were important parts of the result. However, Darling’s combination of defensive reliability and a crucial second-half goal made him a worthy choice.

What the result means

The emphatic win gives Norwich a major boost and continues a positive run of away performances. It also provides encouragement for Philippe Clement, whose side showed that they can be efficient in attack while remaining disciplined without the ball.

Bristol City, by contrast, will have to respond quickly. Their possession figures suggest they were not completely absent from the contest, but their lack of accuracy in front of goal and defensive errors proved costly. The challenge for Skubala will be to restore confidence, improve concentration at the back and find a more effective attacking threat.

At Ashton Gate, Norwich were clinical when the opportunities arrived and ruthless after taking control. Maghoma set them on their way, Darling’s goal opened the floodgates, and Brooks, Makama and Kvistgaarden ensured there would be no late comeback.

The 5-0 victory was a convincing demonstration of Norwich’s attacking quality, while Harry Darling’s outstanding contribution made him a deserved Man of the Match.
