Southampton Thrash QPR 4-1 as Cameron Bragg Shines in St Mary’s Rout
Southampton produced another impressive Championship performance at St Mary’s, defeating Queens Park Rangers 4-1 as Kuryu Matsuki, Cameron Bragg, Keven Schlotterbeck and Welington found the net.

Southampton continued their impressive run of form with a commanding 4-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, October 31, producing another statement performance in the Championship.
The Saints went into the fixture looking to build on their recent positive results, while QPR arrived with confidence after their emphatic 5-0 victory over Swansea City in their previous league outing. Despite the visitors’ strong attacking display the week before, Southampton quickly demonstrated why they have become such a difficult side to handle at home.
The hosts eventually secured all three points through goals from Kuryu Matsuki, Cameron Bragg, Keven Schlotterbeck and Welington. Richard Kone scored for QPR shortly after Southampton had established a three-goal advantage, but the response from the visitors was not enough to change the outcome.
Southampton controlled 54 per cent of possession and produced 19 attempts compared with QPR’s 12. The Saints also registered nine shots on target, while the visitors managed only two, highlighting the difference in attacking efficiency between the teams.
Matsuki Gives Southampton an Early Lead
Southampton did not need long to find their rhythm. Kuryu Matsuki opened the scoring in the 11th minute, giving the home side the perfect start.
The Japanese midfielder had actually missed an earlier opportunity before making no mistake with his next opening. After Léo Scienza’s effort was blocked, the ball fell kindly to Matsuki, who turned sharply before producing a composed finish.
It was another important goal for Matsuki, who has been enjoying an increasingly influential spell for Southampton. His confidence has grown noticeably in recent weeks, and his ability to arrive in dangerous areas has added another dimension to the Saints’ attack.
The early goal also forced QPR to alter their approach. Rather than allowing Southampton to dictate the contest, the visitors began looking for opportunities of their own, with Paul Smyth and Kwame Poku both testing the home defence.
Daniel Peretz was required to make saves as QPR attempted to respond, while Southampton continued creating openings at the other end. The first half therefore remained competitive despite the hosts holding the advantage.
QPR goalkeeper Pierce Charles also played his part, producing an important stop to deny Keven Schlotterbeck from a header.
Southampton thought they had doubled their lead shortly before halftime when Lewis Dobbin found the net with a header. However, the goal was ruled out because Jack Stephens was judged to have interfered from an offside position, despite not making contact with the ball.
The decision ensured QPR remained within touching distance at the interval, with Southampton taking a narrow 1-0 lead into the dressing room.
Bragg Doubles the Advantage
The second half belonged largely to Southampton.
The home side returned with greater intensity and began finding more space around the QPR defence. Their pressure eventually produced a second goal in the 55th minute, and it was a particularly significant moment for Cameron Bragg.
The Southampton academy graduate finished from Ryan Manning’s cutback, with his effort taking a deflection before finding the net. It was Bragg’s first Championship goal for the club and provided a memorable moment for the 21-year-old midfielder.
Bragg was not simply effective because of his goal. His performance in midfield gave Southampton energy, discipline and control. He worked hard defensively, competed for possession and helped the Saints maintain their authority as the game progressed.
His contribution was one of the major reasons Southampton were able to turn a tight first half into a comfortable victory after the interval.
Schlotterbeck Makes It Three
Southampton were now firmly in control, and QPR struggled to cope with the pressure.
Just 11 minutes after Bragg’s goal, Southampton found the net again. This time it was defender Keven Schlotterbeck who made the difference.
Ryan Manning delivered a dangerous corner into the area, and Schlotterbeck rose at the back post to head the ball beyond Charles in the 66th minute.
The goal demonstrated another strength in Southampton’s game: their ability to threaten from set pieces. Schlotterbeck was equally impressive at the other end of the pitch, helping Southampton deal with QPR’s attempts to create a way back into the match.
With the score at 3-0, Southampton appeared to have complete control.
Kone Gives QPR Brief Hope
QPR refused to disappear completely.
Only two minutes after Schlotterbeck’s goal, Richard Kone pulled one back for the visitors.
Kone had been one of QPR’s biggest threats coming into the match after scoring a hat-trick against Swansea the previous weekend. His goal at St Mary’s showed why Southampton had been warned about his attacking ability.
The striker’s finish reduced the deficit to 3-1 and gave QPR a brief reason to believe they could produce an unlikely comeback.
However, Southampton did not panic.
Instead of retreating completely, the Saints continued to attack and created further opportunities. Scienza and Dobbin both forced saves from Charles, while Finn Azaz also threatened as Southampton searched for a fourth.
The home side’s willingness to continue pushing forward ultimately paid off.
Welington Completes the Rout
Southampton put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time.
Welington, who had come off the bench late in the match, scored in the fifth minute of added time to make it 4-1.
The substitute needed only a few minutes to make an impact. Divin Mubama helped create the opening before the ball reached Welington, who produced a powerful left-footed finish from inside the area.
It was the perfect ending to another strong home performance from Southampton.
The final whistle confirmed a convincing victory that extended the Saints’ impressive home record and kept them firmly among the Championship promotion contenders. Southampton have now won four of their last five league matches, underlining the improvement in their recent form.
Cameron Bragg Named Man of the Match
While several Southampton players delivered outstanding performances, Cameron Bragg deserves recognition as the Man of the Match.
The 21-year-old combined his goal with an energetic midfield display and demonstrated maturity throughout the contest. His first Championship goal was obviously the headline moment, but his work away from the ball was just as important.
Bragg completed 73 of his 76 passes, recorded four tackles and two interceptions, and helped Southampton maintain control in the middle of the pitch. His performance earned him a 9/10 rating in one detailed assessment of the match.
His goal also carried additional significance because of the difficult moments he had experienced earlier in the season. After being sent off in Southampton’s south-coast derby victory earlier in October, Bragg responded in the best possible fashion by producing a disciplined and influential display against QPR.
His performance was particularly impressive given the quality of QPR’s midfield. He did not look overwhelmed by the occasion and instead helped Southampton dominate important areas of the game.
Ryan Manning also deserves significant credit after providing assists for both Bragg and Schlotterbeck. Kuryu Matsuki supplied the early breakthrough, while Schlotterbeck combined defensive authority with a crucial goal.
However, Bragg’s combination of goal contribution, defensive work, passing accuracy and midfield control made him the standout performer.
Southampton Strengthen Their Promotion Push
The victory represents another important step for Southampton as the Championship campaign develops.
There were signs before kickoff that QPR could provide a serious test. The visitors had recently scored five goals against Swansea and had shown enough quality to trouble teams throughout the division.
Southampton nevertheless handled the challenge with increasing authority as the match progressed.
The Saints were not perfect during the opening 45 minutes, and QPR created opportunities that could have made the contest more difficult. But Southampton responded strongly after the break, turning their narrow advantage into a convincing victory.
For manager Tonda Eckert, the performance will provide plenty of encouragement. His side showed attacking variety, defensive resilience and the ability to respond positively to difficult moments.
For QPR, the defeat was a disappointing follow-up to their spectacular victory over Swansea. They competed for periods and Richard Kone continued his scoring form, but their defensive problems eventually proved too costly.
Southampton, meanwhile, can take confidence from another four-goal display. With Matsuki finding form, Bragg emerging as an important young midfielder, Schlotterbeck contributing at both ends and Manning continuing to create chances, the Saints possess several different routes to victory.
The 4-1 scoreline ultimately reflected Southampton’s superiority, particularly after halftime. Their next challenge will be maintaining this momentum when the pressure of the Championship promotion race intensifies.
For now, St Mary’s has once again witnessed a Southampton performance full of attacking quality, youthful energy and growing confidence.
