Ajax Return to Winning Ways With Convincing Groningen Victory

Ajax produced an impressive attacking display on Sunday afternoon as they secured a commanding 5-2 victory over FC Groningen in the Eredivisie.

Míchel Sánchez’s side entered the fixture looking to respond after a difficult run of results, and they delivered a strong performance at the Euroborg. The Amsterdam club controlled large parts of the contest and eventually left Groningen with all three points after scoring five goals.

Julian Brandt and Jorthy Mokio were the standout scorers for Ajax, with both players finding the net twice. Aaron Bouwman also got on the scoresheet as the visitors produced one of their most convincing attacking performances of the campaign.

The result was particularly important for Ajax after they had gone through three matches without a victory. Their response was emphatic, although Groningen managed to create moments of danger and scored twice during the second half.

Ajax Miss Penalty Before Taking Control

Ajax started the match positively and quickly created opportunities around the Groningen penalty area.

Marcos Leonardo, who was given a starting role in the league, had an early opportunity to put the visitors ahead but was unable to finish after finding himself in a promising position.

The Brazilian forward was then involved in another major moment when he was brought down inside the penalty area by Groningen goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen. The referee awarded Ajax a penalty, giving Davy Klaassen the chance to open the scoring.

Klaassen stepped up from the spot, but Vaessen produced an excellent save to keep the score level.

Ajax did not allow the missed opportunity to affect their approach. They continued pushing forward and eventually found the breakthrough through Brandt in the 27th minute.

Owen Wijndal won possession before finding Brandt, who moved towards goal and calmly finished to give Ajax a 1-0 advantage.

The visitors doubled their lead ten minutes later. Aaron Bouwman reacted quickest to a loose ball following a corner and finished from close range to make it 2-0.

Ajax went into the interval with a two-goal advantage and appeared to be firmly in control.

Groningen Fight Back After the Break

Groningen returned from half-time with renewed energy and quickly gave their supporters something to celebrate.

Brynjólfur Willumsson pulled one goal back in the 49th minute after Ajax were punished for losing possession in their own half. The goal reduced the deficit to 2-1 and briefly gave the hosts hope of completing a comeback.

Ajax, however, responded in the manner of a side determined to put the match beyond doubt.

Klaassen appeared to have restored Ajax’s two-goal advantage shortly afterwards, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review because of an offside offence in the build-up.

The decision did not prevent Ajax from finding another goal.

In the 60th minute, Brandt struck again to make it 3-1. The German midfielder combined with Wijndal before producing a composed finish to score his second goal of the afternoon.

With Groningen struggling to contain Ajax’s attacking movement, the visitors continued to create opportunities.

Mokio Takes Centre Stage

The biggest individual impact of the afternoon came from Jorthy Mokio.

The young Ajax midfielder scored twice within six minutes, turning a comfortable advantage into a commanding lead and effectively ending Groningen’s hopes of recovering.

Mokio’s first goal arrived in the 69th minute when he reacted quickest inside the penalty area and finished from close range.

Just six minutes later, he completed his brace with another composed finish, giving Ajax a 5-1 lead.

The two goals capped an excellent individual performance from Mokio, who was influential in Ajax’s midfield and also contributed to the team’s attacking threat.

According to match-rating data, Mokio received an 8.4 rating, the highest among the Ajax players, while another match-rating source also selected him as the game’s MVP with an 8.9 rating.

Groningen Add Late Consolation

Despite Ajax’s dominance, Groningen continued to look for opportunities and eventually scored a second goal in the 83rd minute.

Thom van Bergen found the net to reduce the deficit to 5-2, but there was never a realistic suggestion that Ajax’s victory was under serious threat at that stage.

Groningen were given another chance to score from the penalty spot in stoppage time after a late incident inside the box. Van Bergen stepped up, hoping to add another goal, but Ajax goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen produced the save.

Ter Stegen’s penalty stop ensured Ajax maintained their three-goal advantage until the final whistle.

Ajax’s Attacking Numbers Tell the Story

The final score reflected Ajax’s superiority in front of goal, although Groningen actually finished with slightly more total attempts.

Groningen recorded 16 shots compared with Ajax’s 15, but the quality of the visitors’ finishing made the difference. Ajax registered 11 shots on target, compared with five from Groningen.

The visitors also enjoyed 57% possession according to the match statistics shown, allowing them to dictate the tempo for significant periods.

Ajax’s ability to turn their chances into goals was ultimately decisive. Five different attacking phases resulted in five goals, with Brandt and Mokio responsible for four of them.

The victory also marked Ajax’s third consecutive away win in the Eredivisie, underlining their effectiveness on the road.

Jorthy Mokio Named Man of the Match

Jorthy Mokio was the standout performer in an Ajax side filled with impressive individual displays.

His two goals were crucial, arriving at a point when Groningen were attempting to regain control of the contest. The first restored Ajax’s three-goal cushion, while the second pushed the score to 5-1 and effectively settled the match.

Mokio’s contribution went beyond his goals. His movement, energy and involvement in Ajax’s attacking play helped the visitors maintain pressure after Groningen had reduced the deficit.

Julian Brandt also deserves significant credit after scoring twice, while Aaron Bouwman contributed a goal from defence. Davy Klaassen had a mixed afternoon after missing a penalty but remained involved in Ajax’s attacking play and assisted Mokio’s second goal.

Still, Mokio’s brace and overall performance made him the strongest candidate for the Man of the Match award.

A Much-Needed Statement From Ajax

The 5-2 victory gives Ajax an important boost after a difficult period.

Rather than allowing their recent results to affect their confidence, Sánchez’s players responded with an attacking performance that produced five goals away from home.

Groningen showed enough attacking quality to score twice, but Ajax were ultimately too clinical and had enough control to secure a comfortable victory.

Brandt’s two goals, Bouwman’s contribution and Mokio’s decisive brace gave Ajax the perfect attacking platform, while ter Stegen’s late penalty save ensured the match ended with a three-goal margin.

For Ajax, the focus now turns to building on this performance and carrying the confidence from Groningen into their next fixtures.
