AZ Alkmaar Drop Points in Eredivisie Title Race

AZ Alkmaar were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against SC Cambuur on Sunday as their bid for the Eredivisie title suffered another setback.

The result leaves AZ in second place in the Eredivisie with 20 points from nine matches, three points behind leaders Feyenoord. The Alkmaar side have now recorded six wins, two draws and one defeat in the league this season.

With the title race beginning to take shape, AZ travelled to the Kooi Stadion looking to respond after their 2-0 defeat to Feyenoord before the international break. Instead, they had to fight back twice to rescue a point against a stubborn Cambuur side.

Cambuur Strike Early

AZ were immediately put under pressure when Nicolas Binder gave Cambuur the lead just seven minutes into the match.

The early setback forced AZ to chase the game, but the visitors gradually settled and began to create opportunities of their own.

Their response arrived in the 26th minute when Ro-Zangelo Daal found the net to bring AZ level at 1-1.

The equaliser gave AZ momentum, but Cambuur remained dangerous and continued to threaten whenever they moved forward.

The hosts eventually regained their advantage before the interval. Ilyes Hamache scored in the 39th minute to send Cambuur into half-time with a 2-1 lead.

AZ therefore faced a difficult second half, knowing that another dropped result would leave them further behind Feyenoord in the title race.

AZ Given Numerical Advantage

The match changed significantly in the 53rd minute when Cambuur defender Devid Eugene Bouah was sent off.

With Cambuur reduced to 10 players, AZ had a numerical advantage and almost 40 minutes to find another equaliser and potentially complete the comeback.

The visitors dominated possession as they attempted to break down the hosts’ defence. AZ finished the match with 64% possession, compared with Cambuur’s 36%.

However, possession alone did not guarantee victory. Cambuur remained disciplined and continued to make life difficult for an AZ side that struggled to turn their territorial advantage into clear opportunities. the host defended with determination throughout.

AZ registered seven shots in total, with four on target, while Cambuur produced 11 attempts and six shots on target despite spending a large portion of the second half with 10 players.

Meerdink Rescues a Point

AZ’s persistence finally paid off in the 83rd minute.

Mexx Meerdink stepped up from the penalty spot and converted to make it 2-2, giving AZ a much-needed lifeline in the closing stages.

The equaliser was particularly important for the visitors after Cambuur had defended their lead for almost half an hour while playing a man down.

AZ pushed for a winner during the final minutes, but Cambuur refused to collapse. The hosts held on to secure a valuable point, while AZ had to accept another frustrating result.

The match finished 2-2, with Binder and Hamache scoring for Cambuur and Daal and Meerdink getting on the scoresheet for AZ.

Setback for AZ’s Title Ambitions

Although AZ remain firmly in the title race, Sunday’s result represents an opportunity missed.

The Alkmaar club are currently second in the Eredivisie on 20 points, while Feyenoord lead the standings with 23 points. PSV Eindhoven are only one point behind AZ in third, making the race at the top increasingly competitive.

AZ had the perfect opportunity to put pressure on Feyenoord after the leaders’ earlier results, but the draw means they remain three points behind the league leaders after nine matches.

Their inability to defeat a 10-man Cambuur side will therefore be particularly disappointing. AZ had the majority of possession and a numerical advantage for a significant portion of the second half, yet they could not find a third goal.

For a team with genuine title ambitions, these are the types of matches that can become costly later in the campaign.

Cambuur Show Character

While the result will be viewed as two points dropped by AZ, Cambuur deserve significant credit for their performance.

They took the lead twice and continued to compete after Bouah’s dismissal left them with 10 men. Their resilience ensured that AZ could not turn their advantage into a winning goal.

Cambuur remain 14th in the Eredivisie with nine points after nine matches, but holding one of the league’s leading title contenders to a draw will provide plenty of encouragement.

For AZ, however, attention will quickly turn to their next league fixture. Sitting second and still within touching distance of Feyenoord, the title race remains very much alive, but Sunday’s draw showed that AZ cannot afford to keep dropping points if they want to challenge seriously for the Eredivisie crown.

AZ Must Respond Quickly

The draw also underlines the importance of consistency for AZ as they continue their pursuit of the Eredivisie title. Their position near the top of the standings means every dropped point can have a major impact, particularly with Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven also competing for the championship.

Despite the disappointment, there were positives for AZ to take from the match. The visitors showed character by recovering from an early deficit and refusing to give up after Cambuur regained the lead. Meerdink’s late penalty demonstrated their ability to keep pushing until the final stages, even when the game appeared to be slipping away.

However, AZ will know that their next matches must produce better results if they want to remain serious contenders. Being second in the table puts them in a strong position, but the margins between the leading teams are narrow. A run of dropped points could quickly see them lose ground to Feyenoord or fall behind PSV.

The performance at Cambuur therefore serves as a reminder that AZ cannot afford to underestimate opponents, regardless of their position in the standings. Their ability to turn promising performances into victories will be crucial as the season progresses and the pressure of the title race increases.

AZ Alkmaar will leave Leeuwarden disappointed, having twice come from behind but ultimately failing to take advantage of playing against 10 men.
