Argentina Set to Take FIFA Disciplinary Case to CAS After Appeals Committee Upholds Key Sanctions
Argentina’s Football Association is preparing to challenge FIFA at the Court of Arbitration for Sport after its appeals against disciplinary sanctions were largely unsuccessful. Leandro Paredes’ 10-match suspension and a $321,000 fine against the federation remain in place, although Nahuel Molina secured a reduction in his punishment.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) is preparing to take its disciplinary dispute with FIFA to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after the world governing body upheld key punishments imposed following Argentina’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain.
FIFA’s Appeals Committee has maintained the 10-match suspension handed to midfielder Leandro Paredes and the $321,000 fine imposed on the AFA. The federation had challenged the sanctions, but its appeal was unsuccessful on those points. There was, however, a partial victory for Argentina, with Nahuel Molina’s suspension reduced from seven matches to four and his fine lowered from $90,000 to $60,000.
The AFA confirmed the outcome in a statement published on its official website on Friday, 6 November. It said its next move would be to request the full reasons behind FIFA’s decisions before presenting the remaining issues to CAS for another review.
Paredes Remains at the Centre of the Disciplinary Case
Paredes received the heaviest individual punishment after being involved in confrontations that followed Argentina’s 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final on 19 July. The match was played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where Spain secured the title and Argentina were left to deal with the disappointment of missing out on another world crown.
Tensions rose after the final whistle as Spain’s players celebrated their victory. Paredes was among the Argentina figures involved in the disorder, with footage appearing to show him grabbing Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat. He was also involved in an incident with substitute Gavi, who had moved towards the confrontation before being forced to the ground by Argentina forward Thiago Almada.
FIFA subsequently opened disciplinary proceedings to examine the conduct of those involved. Paredes was handed a 10-game ban and a $90,000 fine.
For Argentina, the length of the suspension is a major concern. A 10-match punishment could affect Paredes’ availability across a substantial part of the national team’s schedule. The AFA’s decision to pursue the matter beyond FIFA shows it is seeking an independent review.
Molina Receives a Reduction, but Argentina Still Has Questions
Molina’s case produced a different outcome. The defender’s original punishment was a seven-match suspension, accompanied by a $90,000 fine. Following the appeal, FIFA reduced the ban to four matches and lowered the financial penalty to $60,000.
The AFA acknowledged the change in its official statement, explaining that FIFA’s Appeals Committee had accepted its challenge in relation to Molina. However, it made clear that the association remained dissatisfied with the decisions concerning Paredes and the fines imposed on the federation.
FIFA did not reject every part of Argentina’s appeal: it granted relief in Molina’s case while maintaining the sanctions against Paredes and the AFA. The federation’s planned CAS challenge is focused on the punishments that were not overturned.
Why FIFA Punished the Argentine Federation
The AFA’s $321,000 fine was imposed over several alleged breaches of FIFA’s disciplinary code. These included team misconduct, discriminatory chants and gestures by supporters, and the use of a sporting event for demonstrations considered to be of a non-sporting nature.
One of the incidents cited during Argentina’s World Cup campaign involved a banner displayed by players after their 2-1 semi-final victory over England. The message asserted Argentina’s sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory. The banner added a political dimension to the disciplinary scrutiny surrounding the team.
FIFA’s action also addressed discriminatory behaviour attributed to sections of Argentina’s support. Such conduct is treated seriously under the governing body’s disciplinary framework, which places responsibility on national associations to help prevent discriminatory behaviour at matches and to respond when incidents occur.
The fine against the AFA is separate from the individual suspensions and fines imposed on players and coaching staff. The association must meet the financial penalty unless a later appeal changes the decision.
The Final Defeat That Led to the Controversy
Argentina’s disciplinary problems followed a painful ending to their World Cup campaign. Spain defeated them 1-0 in the final on 19 July, bringing the tournament to a close with the European side celebrating the trophy and the South American team facing the disappointment of defeat.
The match itself was followed by an on-field confrontation involving players and staff. Paredes, Molina, Almada and Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala were among those reported to have been involved in the scenes.
FIFA’s disciplinary process resulted in sanctions for several people connected with the match. Spain midfielder Gavi was also involved in the confrontation and was subject to disciplinary action.
For Argentina, the timing was particularly damaging. The team had reached the final after an impressive run, including a 2-1 semi-final win over England, but the celebrations and sporting achievement of that campaign were overshadowed by the disciplinary issues that followed.
What Happens Next at CAS?
The AFA says it will first request the detailed grounds for FIFA’s decisions. Those written explanations will allow its legal team to examine the reasoning behind the Appeals Committee’s ruling and prepare the next stage of its challenge.
CAS, based in Lausanne, Switzerland, is an independent body that resolves sports-related disputes. It can hear appeals against decisions made by sporting organisations when the relevant rules allow a case to be brought before it. Its role in this matter would be to review the challenged FIFA decisions in line with the applicable regulations and the arguments presented by the parties.
The AFA has said it believes it has sufficient arguments in fact and law to seek that review. The appeal would give the association an opportunity to present its case before a body independent of FIFA’s disciplinary structure. CAS will not automatically overturn the ruling simply because Argentina disagrees with it; the federation will need to establish the basis for its challenge, while FIFA will be able to defend the decisions under review.
However, the federation’s announcement should not be mistaken for a successful appeal or a guarantee that the sanctions will be overturned. The punishments remain in place unless CAS or another competent body changes them.
Until a CAS ruling is delivered, Paredes’ 10-match suspension and the $321,000 fine against the association stand. Molina’s reduced four-match ban and $60,000 fine remain in place.
Argentina’s decision to pursue the matter beyond FIFA keeps the controversy alive months after the final. The AFA is seeking a fresh assessment of the sanctions it considers unjustified, while FIFA’s disciplinary decisions remain binding for now. The CAS process will determine whether the federation can secure any further changes or whether the remaining punishments will be upheld.
