Lionel Scaloni is set to continue as head coach of Argentina after reaching an agreement with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) over a new contract that could keep him in charge through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The decision ends weeks of uncertainty surrounding the future of the coach, whose current agreement is due to expire at the end of 2026. Reports from Argentina indicate that Scaloni has accepted the proposal presented by the AFA in September, with the remaining financial and administrative details now being finalized before the agreement is formally signed.

The development represents an important moment for Argentina as the national team moves into a new chapter following the end of Lionel Messi’s international career.

Scaloni had previously left his future open after Argentina’s 2026 World Cup campaign, prompting questions about whether he would remain in the position for another full cycle. However, discussions with AFA president Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia progressed during the September and October international window, eventually bringing both sides closer to an agreement.

According to reports, the structure of the new deal is expected to follow a “two plus two” arrangement. Scaloni would initially sign a two-year contract taking him through the 2028 Copa América, with an extension that could carry the agreement through the 2030 World Cup.

Although the arrangement has been agreed in principle, the formal signature is still required before the renewal can be officially announced.

Scaloni Gives Green Light

The latest breakthrough came after Scaloni took time to consider whether he wanted to remain with the national team following the difficult conclusion to Argentina’s 2026 World Cup campaign.

The coach had acknowledged that he needed to assess several factors before making a final decision, particularly the sporting project and Argentina’s ability to remain competitive at the highest level.

His position gradually became clearer during the September international window. Scaloni indicated that he was willing to continue if he believed there was a strong enough project to build another competitive team.

That stance gave the AFA confidence that negotiations could be completed.

Reports published this week now indicate that the coach has given his approval to the proposal originally sent to him in September. The two sides have subsequently worked through the outstanding aspects of the agreement.

The expected renewal is therefore more than simply an extension of Scaloni’s employment. It represents the AFA’s desire to preserve the coaching structure responsible for one of the most successful periods in Argentina’s modern football history.

A Successful Era Under Scaloni

Scaloni took charge of Argentina in 2018, initially in an interim capacity before eventually becoming the permanent head coach.

What followed was a remarkable transformation of the national team.

Under his leadership, Argentina ended a long wait for major international silverware by winning the 2021 Copa América. The team then defeated Italy in the 2022 Finalissima before producing one of the greatest achievements in the country’s football history by winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Argentina also won the 2024 Copa América, further strengthening Scaloni’s reputation as one of the most successful coaches ever to lead the national side.

His success was not only measured by trophies. Scaloni helped create a strong team culture, restored confidence within the squad and established a group capable of competing consistently against the world’s best teams.

His relationship with senior players, combined with his willingness to introduce younger talent, became one of the defining features of his tenure.

That continuity is now expected to continue into the next World Cup cycle.

Moving Beyond Messi

One of Scaloni’s biggest challenges will be managing Argentina without Messi as an active international player.

Messi’s final chapter with the national team has now arrived, leaving Argentina without the player who played a central role in its recent golden era.

The transition will not be straightforward. Messi was Argentina’s captain, creative leader and most influential player for many years. However, Scaloni has already demonstrated an ability to gradually prepare the team for changes within the squad.

The coach has introduced younger players alongside established figures, giving Argentina a foundation for the future.

The emergence of players such as Julián Álvarez, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister and other members of the younger generation gives the national team options as it begins another cycle.

Scaloni will now be responsible for developing that group while maintaining Argentina’s competitive standards.

The Road to 2030

If the agreement is formally signed as expected, Scaloni could remain in charge for the 2030 World Cup.

That tournament carries additional significance for Argentina because the country is scheduled to host the opening match as part of the centenary celebrations of the World Cup. Spain, Portugal and Morocco are the main hosts of the tournament, while Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay are set to stage centenary fixtures in South America.

For Scaloni, leading Argentina into that tournament would give him the opportunity to oversee another complete generation of players.

It would also make him one of the longest-serving coaches in Argentina’s history.

Reports indicate that the contract arrangement gives both sides flexibility, with the initial commitment running through 2028 and the continuation toward 2030 built into the agreement.

The structure appears designed to provide stability while also allowing both Scaloni and the AFA to assess the project along the way.

Official Announcement Expected

The AFA has yet to make the final official announcement, meaning Scaloni’s continuation is not technically complete until the paperwork is signed.

However, multiple Argentine reports have described the agreement as essentially settled.

The remaining work is understood to involve final contractual details, including financial and legal matters. Once those issues are resolved, the formal signing is expected to take place, potentially during the next international window in November.

For Argentina, the agreement provides much-needed certainty at a time when the national team is beginning life after Messi.

Rather than starting another rebuilding process under a new coach, the AFA has chosen to maintain the man who guided the country to Copa América glory, the Finalissima and the 2022 World Cup.

Scaloni will now have the opportunity to shape Argentina’s next generation and attempt to keep the country among international football’s leading nations.

The formal signature may still be pending, but the direction is clear: Lionel Scaloni is set to remain at the helm of Argentina, with the 2030 World Cup now firmly within his long-term plans.
