Vinicius Jr Banned for Four LaLiga Games, Set to Miss El Clásico
Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr has been handed a four-match LaLiga ban after his red card against Villarreal, ruling him out of El Clásico against Barcelona. Real Madrid plan to appeal, while José Mourinho has questioned the timing of the announcement.

Vinicius Jr has been suspended for four LaLiga matches following his dismissal during Real Madrid’s meeting with Villarreal, meaning the Brazilian forward will miss the first El Clásico of the 2026/27 season against Barcelona.
The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee confirmed the punishment on Wednesday, October 14, after reviewing the circumstances surrounding Vinicius’ red card in Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Villarreal.
The decision is a major setback for Real Madrid, with Vinicius now ruled out of four consecutive league fixtures. Most significantly, he will not be available when Real Madrid travel to face Barcelona at Camp Nou on October 25.
The suspension follows an incident involving Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba during the second half at the Santiago Bernabéu. Vinicius, who had come off the bench, was involved in a move that initially appeared to result in another Real Madrid goal.
However, the goal was subsequently disallowed after a VAR review identified an incident involving the Brazilian and Saliba before the finish. Vinicius was shown a straight red card after he was found to have pulled the defender’s hair while the ball was not directly being contested between the two players.
The decision immediately sparked frustration from the Real Madrid forward. After receiving his dismissal, Vinicius continued protesting the referee’s decision and had to be restrained by teammates.
The referee’s report also recorded what was described as an aggressive reaction toward the match officials. That part of the incident became an important factor in determining the eventual length of the suspension.
According to reports on the disciplinary decision, Vinicius received two matches for the act of violent conduct and another two for his subsequent protests toward the referee.
Vinicius to miss four crucial LaLiga matches
The punishment means Vinicius will be unavailable for Real Madrid’s next four league matches.
His scheduled absences are:
Sevilla — Home
Barcelona — Away
Racing Santander — Away
Valencia — Away
The biggest blow will undoubtedly be the Barcelona fixture. The first El Clásico of the campaign is scheduled for October 25, and Vinicius’ absence removes one of Real Madrid’s most dangerous attacking options from one of the most important matches on the Spanish football calendar.
The Brazilian is expected to remain available for Real Madrid’s Champions League commitments because the disciplinary punishment applies to domestic league competition. That means his four-match suspension does not prevent him from representing the club in Europe during the period.
This distinction could be particularly important for José Mourinho, who will now have to manage his attacking options differently in LaLiga while still being able to call upon Vinicius in the Champions League.
Real Madrid plan to appeal the decision
Real Madrid are not prepared to simply accept the four-match punishment.
Reports indicate that the club intends to appeal the disciplinary committee’s ruling in an attempt to reduce Vinicius’ suspension. Real Madrid had reportedly expected a punishment of three matches but were ultimately handed a four-game ban.
The club had already challenged the disciplinary process before the final decision was announced, but that initial effort did not prevent the four-match suspension from being imposed.
Real Madrid will therefore turn to the next stage of the appeals process in the hope of having the punishment reduced.
The club’s argument is expected to focus particularly on the additional two-match sanction relating to Vinicius’ reaction to the referee. While the hair-pulling incident itself has been treated as violent conduct under the disciplinary rules, the additional punishment for his protests is likely to be an important part of any appeal.
Whether the appeal succeeds remains to be seen, but the timing leaves Real Madrid facing an immediate problem. Unless the decision is overturned or reduced before the relevant fixtures, Vinicius will miss the meeting with Barcelona.
Mourinho questions timing of announcement
The controversy has also extended beyond the suspension itself, with Real Madrid manager José Mourinho questioning the timing of the announcement.
Mourinho has raised concerns over why the decision was made public shortly before Real Madrid were due to play an important Champions League match.
The Portuguese coach questioned the Spanish refereeing authorities over the decision to publish details of Vinicius’ punishment when the club was preparing for a significant European fixture.
Mourinho’s criticism centred on the timing rather than simply the existence of the disciplinary decision.
“Ask Spanish Refereeing Committee why they published the news about Vini’s ban minutes before he plays an important UCL game,” Mourinho said.
He added: “Real Madrid is a Spanish club, so why publish it now?”
The comments are likely to add another layer to an already tense situation between Real Madrid and Spanish football authorities.
Mourinho has previously been known for speaking openly about refereeing decisions and disciplinary matters, and his latest comments underline the frustration within the Madrid camp following the decision.
The timing of the announcement has become a talking point because Vinicius was expected to feature for Real Madrid in their Champions League campaign even though he would be unavailable domestically.
A difficult period for Real Madrid
Vinicius’ absence comes at an inconvenient point in Real Madrid’s season.
The Brazilian remains one of the club’s most influential attacking players, capable of creating chances, stretching defensive lines and producing decisive moments in major matches.
His absence against Barcelona could therefore significantly alter Mourinho’s plans for the Clásico.
Real Madrid will now have to find another solution on the left side of their attack. The club has several attacking players who can operate in different positions, but replacing Vinicius’ pace, directness and ability to create one-on-one situations will be a major tactical challenge.
The situation also places additional pressure on the players who remain available.
With Vinicius suspended, Real Madrid will need their other forwards to carry a greater share of the attacking responsibility during the four-game period. The team must first deal with Sevilla before travelling to Barcelona, followed by matches against Racing Santander and Valencia.
The sequence means the suspension does not simply remove Vinicius from one high-profile fixture. It takes him out of four consecutive league games during an important period of the campaign.
Vinicius had already apologised
Following the Villarreal incident, Vinicius apologised to his teammates and Real Madrid supporters for his actions.
The forward acknowledged the controversy surrounding his dismissal after the incident and expressed regret over what happened.
His apology, however, did not prevent the disciplinary authorities from proceeding with the case.
The red card had already placed his participation in the Clásico in serious doubt, with Spanish reports indicating before the final ruling that a suspension of at least two matches was likely. The eventual four-game punishment confirmed the worst-case scenario for Real Madrid supporters.
El Clásico loses one of its biggest stars
Vinicius’ absence will be particularly significant because of his importance in matches against Barcelona.
The Brazilian has developed into one of Real Madrid’s most dangerous players in high-profile fixtures, and his battles with Barcelona defenders have frequently attracted attention.
His inability to play on October 25 will therefore change the complexion of the contest.
Barcelona will not have to deal with Vinicius’ speed and movement on the flank, while Real Madrid must prepare for a match without one of its leading attacking threats.
For Mourinho, the immediate priority will be finding the right tactical solution.
The club will also hope that its appeal can produce a reduction in the punishment. If the appeal is successful, Vinicius could potentially return earlier than currently expected.
For now, however, the official position remains clear: Vinicius is suspended for four LaLiga matches and is set to miss Sevilla, Barcelona, Racing Santander and Valencia.
Real Madrid’s planned appeal means the matter is not necessarily finished. Until another decision is reached, though, the Brazilian forward remains unavailable for El Clásico.
The disciplinary ruling has turned what was already a controversial red card into a significant issue for Real Madrid, with the club now fighting both on the pitch and through the appeals process to have its star forward available again as soon as possible.
