Rennes Cruise Past Strasbourg 3-0 as Szymański Stars With Brace
Stade Rennais produced an impressive performance at Roazhon Park, beating Strasbourg 3-0 to move top of Ligue 1, with Sebastian Szymański scoring twice after Boulaye Dia opened the scoring.

Stade Rennais moved to the top of Ligue 1 after an impressive 3-0 victory over Strasbourg at Roazhon Park on Sunday, October 25, with Sebastian Szymański delivering a standout performance to inspire the hosts to another important league victory.
Rennes entered the game looking to respond strongly after dropping points in their previous league outing, and they did exactly that. Franck Haise’s side combined efficiency in front of goal with a disciplined defensive display to secure all three points without conceding.
The victory took Rennes to 16 points from eight matches and sent them to the summit of the Ligue 1 standings, one point ahead of their nearest challengers. It also strengthened the team’s growing confidence as they continue their push near the top of the table.
Rennes Take Control Before Half-Time
The opening stages at Roazhon Park were relatively cagey, with both teams struggling to create clear opportunities in the final third. Strasbourg enjoyed a share of possession and tried to build patiently from the back, but Rennes remained organised and waited for their opportunities.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 34th minute.
Boulaye Dia put Rennes ahead after being picked out by Przemysław Frankowski. The forward kept his composure in the area before finishing to give the home side a deserved advantage.
The goal changed the rhythm of the contest. Rennes began to find more space between Strasbourg’s defensive and midfield lines, while the visitors were forced to take greater risks in search of an equaliser.
Instead, Rennes doubled their advantage seven minutes before the interval.
Mahamadou Nagida provided the assist as Sebastian Szymański found room inside the attacking area and produced a composed finish to make it 2-0 in the 41st minute.
Strasbourg had possession but struggled to turn it into meaningful chances, while Rennes looked increasingly dangerous whenever they moved forward.
The hosts went into half-time with a two-goal cushion and were firmly in control.
Szymański Completes His Brace
Strasbourg needed a fast response after the restart, but Rennes quickly extinguished any hopes of a comeback.
Szymański struck again in the 61st minute, producing one of the finest moments of the match. The Polish midfielder received the ball outside the area before unleashing a superb left-footed effort that found the net.
The finish gave Rennes a 3-0 lead and completed Szymański’s brace.
With the game effectively decided, Rennes were able to manage the remainder of the contest without unnecessary risks. Haise made changes to keep his players fresh, while Strasbourg attempted to find at least a consolation goal.
The visitors could not find a way through.
Rennes’ defensive structure remained solid until the final whistle, with Brice Samba and the defenders doing enough to preserve a clean sheet.
The final statistics showed that Strasbourg actually had slightly more possession, with 53 per cent compared with Rennes’ 47 per cent. However, possession did not tell the full story.
Rennes registered 15 shots to Strasbourg’s 12 and managed five efforts on target. Strasbourg had four shots on target, but their attacking moves repeatedly lacked the quality needed to seriously trouble the hosts.
The result underlined Rennes’ efficiency. They did not need to dominate possession to control the important moments of the match.
Rennes’ Defence Provides the Foundation
While Szymański and Dia received most of the attention for their goals, Rennes’ defensive performance was equally important.
The hosts maintained their shape throughout the contest and limited Strasbourg’s ability to create clear openings. Whenever the visitors attempted to increase the pressure, Rennes’ backline responded with timely clearances and interceptions.
Samba also played his part between the posts, helping Rennes maintain their clean sheet.
Strasbourg created two big chances during the match but failed to convert either of them. Rennes, meanwhile, were clinical when opportunities came their way.
That difference ultimately separated the two teams.
The home side also showed good discipline in possession, choosing the right moments to move forward instead of forcing attacks. Once the third goal went in, Rennes concentrated on protecting their advantage and closing the game professionally.
Man of the Match: Sebastian Szymański
Sebastian Szymański was the clear standout performer for Rennes and deservedly took the Man of the Match award.
The Polish midfielder scored twice, including a composed first-half finish and a spectacular strike shortly after the hour mark that effectively sealed the victory.
His second goal was particularly impressive. Receiving the ball outside the penalty area, Szymański created enough space before curling his effort beyond Filip Jørgensen and into the net.
Beyond his goals, the midfielder remained involved in Rennes’ attacking play and contributed defensively when required. He completed 16 of his 22 passes, won six of his duels and recorded three tackles.
His efficiency was particularly important because he did not need a large number of touches to influence the game. Szymański finished with four attempts, two of which were on target, while also creating one key chance for his teammates.
His performance earned him a rating of around 9.2 from Sofascore, while other match ratings also placed him comfortably above the rest of the players on the pitch.
For Rennes, having a midfielder capable of producing decisive moments from open play could prove valuable as the season develops.
A Statement Victory for Rennes
The 3-0 victory was more than just another three points for Rennes. It demonstrated the team’s ability to respond with authority and showed why they are emerging as serious contenders near the top of Ligue 1.
Dia’s opener gave the hosts the platform they needed, but Szymański’s brace turned the result into a convincing statement.
The clean sheet was another major positive for Haise, particularly against a Strasbourg side that had enough possession to create problems.
Rennes now sit at the summit with 16 points from eight matches, giving them an important advantage as the league campaign continues.
For Strasbourg, the defeat extended a difficult run, while Rennes can take confidence from another convincing display at Roazhon Park.
With attacking quality, defensive organisation and Szymański producing match-winning moments, Rennes have every reason to believe they can remain involved in the Ligue 1 title race.
For now, they can celebrate a convincing home victory and their place at the top of the table.
