Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham: Spurs End Stamford Bridge Hoodoo as Mathys Tel Seals Victory
Tottenham Hotspur secured a memorable 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with a Mike Penders own goal and a brilliant Mathys Tel strike handing Roberto De Zerbi’s side a deserved London derby win.

Tottenham Hotspur produced one of their most impressive results of the Premier League season on Saturday, beating Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to end a long wait for victory at the famous west London ground.
Tottenham controlled possession, created the clearer openings and grew stronger as the contest progressed. Chelsea struggled to turn their spells on the ball into sustained attacking pressure, while Spurs remained patient before punishing the hosts late.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 77th minute when Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders turned a Tottenham corner into his own net. Cole Palmer was sent off three minutes later after receiving a second yellow card, and Mathys Tel completed the victory in the 87th minute with a superb individual finish.
Tottenham had won only one of their previous 34 Premier League visits to Chelsea, making the result a major statement under Roberto De Zerbi.
A Cagey Opening
The match began in difficult conditions, with heavy rain making the surface slick. Chelsea attempted to take control early, but Tottenham gradually settled into the contest and began moving the ball with confidence.
Chelsea’s first serious opening came when Pedro Neto helped create space for Morgan Rogers inside the penalty area. Rogers found Cole Palmer, whose effort from an angle was saved by Antonin Kinsky.
Tottenham responded by increasing their pressure. Omar Marmoush was presented with a good opportunity from close range, but Penders reacted quickly to keep Chelsea level. The young goalkeeper was called upon again when Tel found space and tried to beat him, with Penders rushing from his line to make another important stop.
Chelsea remained dangerous at moments. Jordan Henderson forced Kinsky into action after a quick passing move involving Neto, Rogers and Palmer, while Neto later tested the Tottenham goalkeeper with a free-kick.
Neither side could break the deadlock before half-time. Tottenham had enjoyed more possession, but Chelsea had shown enough threat to suggest the second half could go either way.
Tottenham Take Control
The game became more tactical after the restart. Chelsea tried to find a way through Tottenham’s midfield, but the visitors’ structure made it difficult for Alonso’s team to create clear opportunities.
James Maddison was forced off early in the second half, with Conor Gallagher replacing him. The change did not stop Tottenham from maintaining their control, however, as Spurs continued to dictate the tempo.
Chelsea had moments in attack, but Tottenham’s back line remained composed and repeatedly regained possession.
The statistics reflected Tottenham’s superiority. Spurs finished with 68 per cent possession and 15 total shots compared with Chelsea’s seven. Tottenham also recorded eight attempts from inside the box, while Chelsea had six.
The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute.
Tottenham won a corner, with Mateus Fernandes delivering the ball into a crowded Chelsea penalty area. Penders came out attempting to punch clear, but pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke disrupted the goalkeeper’s effort. The ball struck Penders’ hand and ended up in the Chelsea net.
It was a painful moment for Penders, who had made several good saves earlier. The goalkeeper was making his Premier League debut and was ultimately left with an error that changed the game.
Palmer Sent Off
Chelsea’s problems became even greater only three minutes later.
Palmer, who had already been booked, received a second yellow card after catching Conor Gallagher in a challenge. The Chelsea midfielder was sent off, reducing the hosts to 10 men with Tottenham already ahead.
The dismissal made Chelsea’s task considerably harder. Instead of chasing an equaliser with a full team, Alonso’s players had to defend while also trying to find a way back into the contest.
Tottenham sensed the opportunity and continued to attack. Chelsea’s defensive shape became increasingly stretched, leaving spaces for Spurs to exploit.
Tel Seals the Victory
With three minutes remaining in normal time, Tel delivered the moment that turned Tottenham’s victory into a convincing statement.
The forward collected the ball deep on the left and drove into Chelsea territory. He carried the ball forward before cutting inside and unleashing a low right-footed shot towards the bottom-left corner.
Penders had no chance.
Tel’s finish was one of the highlights of the match and capped a performance in which he caused Chelsea problems with his movement, dribbling and ability to carry the ball over long distances.
The goal effectively ended Chelsea’s hopes of a comeback, and Tottenham managed the remaining minutes professionally.
Man of the Match: Mathys Tel
Mathys Tel was the standout player and deservedly took the Man of the Match award after producing the decisive attacking contribution for Tottenham.
The French forward was involved throughout the contest and combined his work rate with quality in the final third. His winning goal was the obvious highlight, but his performance was about more than the finish.
Tel completed four dribbles, the most by any player in the match, while also recording two key passes and creating opportunities for his teammates. He also had 10 touches inside the opposition penalty area, showing how frequently he found dangerous positions.
His willingness to carry the ball forward gave Tottenham another outlet whenever Chelsea attempted to push higher up the pitch. Once Spurs had taken the lead and Chelsea were reduced to 10 men, Tel’s pace and direct running became even more difficult for the home side to contain.
His late goal also gave the victory a fitting finish. Rather than relying solely on Penders’ mistake and Palmer’s dismissal, Tottenham produced their own moment of quality to put the result beyond doubt.
Tottenham’s Statement Win
For De Zerbi, the victory was another sign that Tottenham are beginning to find consistency. The team followed up their previous league success with another strong performance and showed the discipline needed to protect an advantage before finishing the match in style.
The visitors were especially impressive in possession, forcing Chelsea to spend long periods without the ball.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will have plenty to reflect on. The Blues registered only seven shots and struggled to produce enough clear chances against a Tottenham side that looked increasingly comfortable as the game progressed.
The absence of Joao Pedro also affected Chelsea’s attacking options. Alonso opted to operate without a recognised striker, but the plan failed to provide the cutting edge needed to punish Tottenham.
A Memorable Night for Spurs
Tottenham’s 2-0 victory will be remembered for more than the three points. It ended a difficult run at Stamford Bridge, gave the travelling supporters a result they had waited years to celebrate and provided another boost to De Zerbi’s project.
Spurs combined patience, possession and defensive discipline before taking advantage of Chelsea’s mistakes. Penders’ own goal opened the door, Palmer’s dismissal widened it, and Tel’s brilliant finish closed the game.
For Chelsea, it was a night when opportunities slipped away and the final stages proved costly. For Tottenham, it was the kind of away performance that can change the mood around a season.
The final whistle confirmed a deserved 2-0 victory for the visitors, with Tel’s late strike providing the perfect ending to a memorable London derby.
