Pedro Neto’s Double Fires Chelsea Past Everton as Emi Martínez Injury Overshadows 2-0 Win.
Pedro Neto scored twice in the second half as Chelsea defeated Everton 2-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, handing the Toffees their first Premier League defeat of the season. The victory was overshadowed by a serious-looking head injury suffered by Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martínez.

Chelsea returned from the international break with a statement victory on Merseyside, defeating Everton 2-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday thanks to a second-half double from Pedro Neto.
The result gave Xabi Alonso’s side an important three points and ended Everton’s unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign. It was also Chelsea’s first league clean sheet since January, making the performance particularly encouraging for a team that has been searching for greater defensive consistency.
However, the victory came at a cost, with goalkeeper Emi Martínez forced from the pitch after suffering a concussion in a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
Despite the worrying incident, Chelsea remained composed after Martínez’s departure and held on for a convincing victory.
Everton and Chelsea battle in tense first half
The opening half was closely contested, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut opportunities during the early stages.
Chelsea enjoyed periods of possession and attempted to move the ball quickly through midfield, while Everton relied heavily on their physical approach and the creativity of Jack Grealish.
Cole Palmer registered Chelsea’s first notable effort when he cut inside and fired towards Jordan Pickford, but the Everton goalkeeper was able to make the save.
Chelsea then created another promising opening when Pedro Neto broke forward and cut the ball back towards Jordan Henderson. The midfielder’s effort was blocked before it could seriously trouble Pickford.
Everton gradually began to threaten more as the half progressed. Martínez was called into action to keep out an effort from Merlin Röhl before Everton created one of their best opportunities from a set piece.
Jack Grealish delivered a dangerous cross into the box, allowing Thierno Barry to meet the ball unmarked. However, the Everton striker could not direct his header beyond Martínez, sending it straight at the goalkeeper.
Grealish continued to cause problems and later forced Martínez into another important intervention when the Chelsea goalkeeper tipped his difficult bouncing volley over the crossbar.
The first half also became increasingly physical, with several players receiving yellow cards as both sides battled for control.
Chelsea came close to taking the lead shortly before the break. Henderson delivered a corner towards Moisés Caicedo, who arrived at the back post and unleashed a powerful volley. The effort beat Pickford but struck the crossbar.
Neto also tested Pickford from distance before the interval, ensuring Chelsea finished the opening period with growing momentum.
Neto breaks the deadlock seconds after restart
Chelsea needed less than a minute of the second half to finally find the breakthrough.
Just 43 seconds after the restart, Morgan Rogers produced a clever backheel to release Jorrel Hato down the left side.
Hato drove forward before sending the ball into the area. The delivery bypassed Palmer and found Neto in space.
The Portuguese winger kept his composure and swept the ball underneath Pickford to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead.
The goal immediately changed the dynamic of the contest. Everton were now forced to chase the game, while Chelsea had more space to exploit when they moved forward.
The visitors nearly added another goal soon afterwards, but Everton managed to prevent Chelsea from extending their advantage.
Chelsea’s control of the match was also helped by their organisation without the ball. Everton struggled to reproduce the attacking pressure they had generated during parts of the first half.
Martínez suffers worrying head injury
The biggest concern of the afternoon arrived midway through the second half.
Everton won a free kick, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall delivering the ball into a crowded Chelsea penalty area.
Martínez came off his line to deal with the cross and collided with Branthwaite while attempting to clear the danger.
The Chelsea goalkeeper immediately required medical attention. The incident caused a lengthy stoppage as medical staff attended to the Argentina international.
Branthwaite was able to recover and continue, but Martínez was eventually stretchered from the pitch after receiving several minutes of treatment.
Chelsea later confirmed that the goalkeeper had suffered a concussion. Manager Xabi Alonso said Martínez was conscious when he left the stadium and had been taken to hospital for precautionary tests. The Chelsea boss also indicated that the club would need to wait for further medical assessments before knowing how long the goalkeeper might be unavailable.
The injury forced Alonso to introduce 21-year-old Mike Penders for his Premier League debut.
The Belgian goalkeeper immediately faced a difficult task, coming into a tense away match with Everton still searching for an equaliser.
Penders handled the situation calmly and made an important contribution as Chelsea maintained their advantage.
The young goalkeeper was not required to make a series of major saves, largely because Chelsea’s defence remained organised in front of him. His introduction nevertheless provided an encouraging moment for the club, particularly with Martínez now facing a period of assessment under concussion protocols.
Everton fail to find an equaliser
Everton attempted to respond after going behind but found it difficult to break through Chelsea’s defensive structure.
David Moyes’ team had chances earlier in the match but became less threatening as the second half progressed.
Chelsea, meanwhile, were increasingly comfortable and began looking dangerous whenever they recovered possession.
Palmer had an opportunity to create a second goal on the counterattack and eventually played the ball towards João Pedro, but Pickford stood firm to keep Everton within touching distance.
The home side needed to find a goal, but Chelsea continued to frustrate them.
The longer the match remained 1-0, the greater the pressure became on Everton to take risks. That created additional spaces for Chelsea to exploit.
Neto seals victory in the closing stages
Chelsea finally put the game beyond Everton in the 90th minute.
Henderson attempted to find the target from a free kick, but the effort was blocked by the Everton wall.
The loose ball remained inside the penalty area and eventually fell into Neto’s path.
Instead of rushing his finish, the winger waited for the opportunity to open up before calmly rolling the ball into the bottom corner beyond Pickford.
The goal completed Neto’s brace and effectively ended Everton’s hopes of rescuing a point.
Eleven minutes of added time were played because of the lengthy stoppage caused by Martínez’s injury, but Chelsea remained disciplined until the final whistle.
Neto’s two goals made him the decisive player of the afternoon, while Chelsea’s defensive performance ensured Everton could not find a route back into the contest.
Chelsea climb above Everton
The victory was significant for Chelsea for several reasons.
It was their first win against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, their first Premier League clean sheet since January and their second consecutive league victory.
The result also ended Everton’s unbeaten beginning to the campaign and allowed Chelsea to move above the Toffees in the early Premier League standings.
For Alonso, the performance demonstrated the resilience he has been demanding from his players.
Chelsea were forced to adapt after losing Martínez, yet they did not allow the disruption to affect their concentration. Instead, the team continued defending effectively before Neto completed his outstanding individual performance with a second goal.
For Everton, the defeat will be frustrating. They competed strongly during the opening 45 minutes and created opportunities, but their inability to convert those chances ultimately proved costly.
Their first defeat of the season also highlighted the difference between the two teams after the interval, when Chelsea became more clinical and controlled the important moments.
Martínez injury remains the main concern
While Chelsea supporters will celebrate the three points, attention will now turn to Martínez’s recovery.
The goalkeeper had played an important role before his injury, making several saves and helping Chelsea preserve their clean sheet.
Alonso confirmed that Martínez was conscious when he left the stadium and was undergoing precautionary tests at hospital. His next steps will depend on the results of those assessments and the appropriate concussion protocols.
For now, Chelsea can take satisfaction from a mature away performance, but the condition of their first-choice goalkeeper will remain a major talking point in the days ahead.
Neto’s double ultimately secured the result, but Chelsea will hope the victory does not come with a lengthy absence for Martínez.
The Blues will next welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Stamford Bridge on October 24, while Everton face another difficult test away to Arsenal.
