Tottenham celebrate their 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Tottenham Hotspur continued their impressive revival on Saturday evening as they defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, recording a third consecutive Premier League victory and strengthening the feeling that Roberto De Zerbi’s side are beginning to find their rhythm.

The home side controlled proceedings for long periods and produced a dominant statistical performance, finishing with 79 per cent possession and 34 shots compared with just two attempts from Crystal Palace. Nine of Tottenham’s efforts were on target, while Palace managed only one. The hosts also registered 23 attempts from inside the penalty area, underlining just how much pressure they applied to the visitors.

However, the match changed dramatically just 13 minutes after kick-off when Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta was shown a red card following a VAR review. Referee Michael Oliver had initially produced a yellow card for Mateta’s challenge on Micky van de Ven, but after being advised to review the incident, he upgraded the punishment to a straight red for serious foul play.

Playing against ten men for more than 75 minutes left Palace with an enormous defensive challenge. Tottenham immediately took control of the contest, moving the ball around the pitch and repeatedly pushing the Eagles towards their own penalty area.

Despite the numerical advantage, Spurs did not immediately find the breakthrough. Palace attempted to maintain a compact defensive structure, with goalkeeper Dean Henderson becoming increasingly important as Tottenham continued to attack.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 25th minute.

Tottenham won a corner, and Mohammed Kudus delivered a dangerous ball into the Palace penalty area. Archie Gray attacked the delivery at the back post and headed beyond Henderson to put the hosts 1-0 ahead. It was another important contribution from Gray, who has continued to demonstrate his ability to influence games from a defensive position.

The goal gave Tottenham even more control, but Palace refused to completely collapse. Henderson produced several saves to keep his team within touching distance, while Tottenham occasionally struggled to turn their huge territorial advantage into additional goals.

The statistics nevertheless showed the scale of Spurs’ dominance. Tottenham recorded 34 attempts during the match and nine shots on target, while Palace managed just two shots overall. The visitors were forced to spend most of the game defending and had very little opportunity to build sustained attacks of their own.

Palace did have moments where they threatened to make the contest uncomfortable. Dwight McNeil saw an effort blocked during one of their rare attacking sequences, but Tottenham’s defensive structure prevented the Eagles from creating a sustained spell of pressure.

The second half followed a similar pattern.

Tottenham continued to dictate possession and search for a second goal that would finally remove any doubt about the outcome. Dominic Solanke came close, while other Spurs players also tested Henderson as the home side repeatedly entered the final third.

Henderson was arguably the main reason Palace remained in the contest for as long as they did. The goalkeeper made several important stops, including an excellent save from a header that initially looked destined to produce Tottenham’s second goal.

Eventually, however, the pressure became too much.

In the 73rd minute, Tottenham doubled their advantage through Jan Paul van Hecke. The defender attacked a dangerous delivery and saw his initial header denied by Henderson, but he reacted quickly to the rebound and bundled the ball over the line from close range. The goal finally gave Spurs the cushion their performance had deserved.

Van Hecke’s contribution was particularly significant because his performance went far beyond the goal. The defender was heavily involved in Tottenham’s possession game and helped the hosts maintain control from the back.

He completed 143 of his 151 passes and recorded 160 touches, both match-high figures according to Sofascore. He also produced three key passes, won four aerial duels and covered more than 10 kilometres during the contest. His overall Sofascore rating of 9.2 was the highest of any player on the pitch.

Jan Paul van Hecke Named Man of the Match

Van Hecke was the clear standout performer for Tottenham and deservedly emerged as the Man of the Match.

The centre-back delivered an unusually influential performance in possession while also making a decisive contribution at the other end. His passing allowed Tottenham to move the ball confidently through the defensive and midfield lines, while his physical presence gave Palace another problem to deal with whenever Spurs attacked set pieces.

His goal was the obvious highlight, but his overall display was what separated him from the other Tottenham players.

Van Hecke demonstrated composure whenever Palace attempted to press and consistently helped Spurs maintain their territorial advantage. His ability to contribute in both boxes made him one of the most influential figures on the pitch.

Sofascore awarded him a 9.2 rating, while its match coverage also identified him as the MVP. He was involved in 160 touches and completed 143 passes, numbers that underline how frequently Tottenham used him during their controlled performance.

The supporters also recognised his contribution. According to Sofascore’s post-match voting, Van Hecke received the most Player of the Match votes, further strengthening his claim as Tottenham’s standout performer on the night.

Archie Gray also deserves significant praise for his performance. The youngster opened the scoring with a well-taken header and helped Tottenham maintain their control from the right side before being replaced by Pedro Porro at half-time. His goal was his latest contribution in a period where the young player continues to grow in importance for Spurs.

At the other end, Crystal Palace can take some encouragement from the fact that they continued to defend with determination despite being reduced to ten men so early. Henderson, in particular, kept the scoreline respectable with several important saves.

Nevertheless, the early dismissal ultimately proved too costly.

The defeat leaves Palace under increasing pressure, with the loss representing another difficult result for manager Pierre Sage. Tottenham, meanwhile, have now won three league games in succession, a run that has moved them into the top half of the Premier League table.

The result also represents a significant improvement in Tottenham’s recent fortunes. The club had endured a difficult opening stretch to the campaign, but victories over Coventry City, Chelsea and now Crystal Palace have provided De Zerbi’s team with valuable momentum.

There were also encouraging moments beyond the result. Dejan Kulusevski returned for another spell of action following his injury absence, while 18-year-old academy product Luca Williams-Barnett made his Premier League debut late in the game.

Williams-Barnett nearly made an immediate impact after producing an impressive run and setting up Kudus, although the Ghanaian winger could not convert the opportunity. Kulusevski also came close to adding a third goal, only for Henderson to make another excellent save.

Tottenham will know there is still room for improvement. Dominating possession and producing 34 shots should normally lead to a more emphatic scoreline, particularly when a team has an extra player for most of the match.

Still, the most important thing for Spurs was securing the three points.

They controlled the match, defended comfortably, created numerous opportunities and maintained their winning momentum. Palace’s early red card undoubtedly shaped the contest, but Tottenham still had to find a way through a determined defensive unit.

In the end, Gray’s first-half header and Van Hecke’s second-half finish were enough.

For Van Hecke, the evening was even more memorable. His goal completed a superb individual display and provided the moment that finally settled the match. His influence in possession, defensive authority and attacking contribution made him Tottenham’s most complete performer on the night.

Tottenham therefore leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with another three points, another clean sheet and another sign that their season may be moving in a much more positive direction.

For Crystal Palace, the challenge is now to regroup quickly after a defeat heavily influenced by Mateta’s early dismissal.

For Spurs, however, the message is clear: the winning run is gathering momentum, and Jan Paul van Hecke is proving that his importance to the team extends far beyond his primary defensive responsibilities.
