Chelsea produced a strong second-half performance to defeat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, securing an important Premier League victory after a goalless opening 45 minutes.

Morgan Rogers broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart before Cole Palmer doubled Chelsea’s advantage from the penalty spot. Manchester United were also reduced to 10 men when Lisandro Martinez was shown a second yellow card in the 63rd minute, leaving the visitors with too much to overcome.

The result gave Chelsea another important three points and extended Manchester United’s difficult run, with the Red Devils now without a victory in nine consecutive matches in all competitions. The defeat has also increased the pressure surrounding manager Michael Carrick.

Cagey opening at Stamford Bridge

The first half was much closer than the final score suggested.

Chelsea had periods of possession and looked to use the pace of Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Estevao Willian to stretch Manchester United’s defence. Palmer also remained heavily involved in Chelsea’s attacking play, frequently dropping into deeper areas to receive the ball and help the hosts build from midfield.

Manchester United, however, were far from passive.

The visitors created several promising opportunities during the opening period and looked capable of causing Chelsea problems whenever they attacked quickly. Bruno Fernandes was presented with a particularly good opportunity but was unable to keep his effort down, while Amad Diallo also tested Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders.

Both teams thought they had taken the lead at different stages of the first half, but neither goal stood.

Estevao found the net for Chelsea, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. Manchester United later celebrated when Matheus Cunha appeared to have scored, but VAR intervened and the goal was also disallowed.

Despite the chances, the teams went into the interval level at 0-0.

Chelsea entered the break with 59 per cent possession compared with United’s 41 per cent, while the hosts also finished the game with more attempts. The statistics reflected Chelsea’s growing control, although United had enough opportunities to punish them before the interval.

Rogers breaks the deadlock

The game changed almost immediately after the restart.

Chelsea came out with greater purpose and began putting Manchester United under sustained pressure. The breakthrough arrived in the 50th minute when Morgan Rogers produced one of the moments of the match.

The England international received the ball in midfield before driving forward towards the United penalty area. Instead of being closed down effectively, Rogers was allowed to carry the ball through the defensive line.

He moved beyond several United players before calmly lifting his finish over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

It was an excellent individual goal that gave Chelsea the advantage and rewarded the hosts for their improved start to the second half.

Rogers had shown throughout the match that he was one of Chelsea’s most dangerous attacking players, and his ability to carry the ball at speed proved particularly difficult for Manchester United to contain.

The goal also forced United to change their approach.

The visitors now needed to attack more aggressively, but that created additional space for Chelsea to exploit. Palmer, Rogers and Estevao continued to threaten, while Chelsea’s midfield began winning more second balls and keeping United away from dangerous areas.

Martinez sent off as Palmer doubles Chelsea’s lead

Manchester United’s situation became considerably worse just 13 minutes after Rogers’ opener.

Lisandro Martinez, who had already been booked, became involved in an incident inside the United penalty area involving Wesley Fofana. Following a VAR review, referee Peter Bankes awarded Chelsea a penalty and showed Martinez a second yellow card, meaning the Argentine defender was sent off.

The decision gave Chelsea an opportunity to take complete control of the contest.

Cole Palmer stepped forward to take responsibility from 12 yards.

The Chelsea star kept his composure and converted the penalty to make it 2-0 in the 64th minute. Although Lammens managed to get a hand to the effort, he could not prevent the ball from finding the net.

For Palmer, the goal was another significant milestone. It was his 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea, reached in his 105th appearance for the club.

With Chelsea two goals ahead and United down to 10 players, the match was effectively under the hosts’ control.

Chelsea manage the game professionally

Chelsea did not need to take unnecessary risks after Palmer’s penalty.

Instead, Xabi Alonso’s side focused on controlling possession, moving the ball around the pitch and preventing Manchester United from building sustained pressure.

The statistics underline Chelsea’s dominance.

The hosts finished with 59 per cent possession and 19 total shots compared with United’s 41 per cent possession and 12 attempts. Chelsea also registered 13 attempts from inside the box, showing how frequently they were able to reach dangerous attacking positions.

Manchester United still had moments when they threatened.

Bryan Mbeumo came close to pulling one back late in the match when he struck the crossbar with a powerful effort from outside the box. Penders was required to make an important intervention, with the ball also clipping the woodwork before Chelsea eventually cleared the danger.

Chelsea also had opportunities to add a third.

Estevao appeared to have scored again, but VAR once more ruled out the effort for offside. Palmer later had another chance but curled his attempt over the crossbar.

The Blues ultimately settled for two goals, but they had done enough to secure the victory.

Man of the Match: Wesley Fofana

While Morgan Rogers deserved enormous credit for his superb opening goal and Cole Palmer delivered another important contribution, Wesley Fofana was one of Chelsea’s most influential performers and stood out as the Man of the Match.

Fofana’s performance was important at both ends of the pitch.

Defensively, he helped Chelsea maintain their shape and deal with Manchester United’s attacking players. His positioning, strength and ability to recover possession gave the Blues greater security as the match developed.

His most decisive contribution came during the incident that led to Chelsea’s second goal.

Fofana was involved in the penalty-area clash with Martinez that prompted the VAR review. The subsequent decision resulted in Martinez receiving his second yellow card and Chelsea being awarded the penalty that Palmer converted.

That moment completely shifted the contest.

Fofana also showed composure in possession and helped Chelsea play out from the back instead of simply defending their advantage. His ability to remain calm under pressure was particularly valuable during United’s attempts to respond.

Sofascore’s post-match analysis also highlighted Fofana’s all-round performance, giving him one of the highest ratings among the Chelsea players and crediting him with a strong defensive display.

Rogers was another obvious candidate after scoring the opening goal, while Palmer delivered an important penalty and reached the milestone of 50 Premier League goals for Chelsea.

However, Fofana’s contribution provided the foundation for Chelsea to keep a clean sheet and control the match after taking the lead.

What the result means

For Chelsea, the victory represents more than just three points.

The Blues showed patience in a difficult first half before producing a much sharper performance after the restart. Rogers’ individual quality provided the breakthrough, while Palmer’s penalty gave them the cushion they needed.

The result also strengthened Chelsea’s position in the upper reaches of the Premier League, with the victory moving them above Liverpool into fourth place according to Sky Sports’ match analysis.

For Manchester United, however, the situation is becoming increasingly concerning.

The visitors had enough opportunities during the first half to take something from the game but failed to make them count. Once Rogers scored and Martinez was dismissed, the challenge became significantly harder.

United’s nine-match winless run is now their longest since 1988, adding another unwanted chapter to what has been a difficult campaign.

Carrick will now face further questions about his position, while Manchester United must find a way to turn promising spells into results.

Chelsea, meanwhile, can take confidence from a mature second-half display.

The Blues were patient when the game was level, ruthless when opportunities arrived and disciplined enough to protect their advantage.

Rogers supplied the brilliance, Palmer delivered the finish from the spot, and Fofana helped provide the defensive platform.

In the end, Chelsea’s 2-0 victory was a deserved reward for a side that found another level after half-time and took full advantage when Manchester United’s discipline collapsed.
