Famalicão Cruise Past Rio Ave 4-0 as Óscar Aranda Stars in Dominant Second Half
FC Famalicão produced a ruthless second-half display to defeat Rio Ave 4-0 in the Primeira Liga, with Roméo Beney, Pedro Santos and a late brace from Óscar Aranda securing a convincing away victory.

FC Famalicão delivered an impressive second-half performance on Sunday as they swept aside Rio Ave 4-0 at the Estádio dos Arcos in the Primeira Liga.
The visitors entered the match looking for a response after a difficult run of results, and they eventually produced exactly that. After a goalless first half, Famalicão found another level after the interval, scoring four times to turn a closely contested opening period into a one-sided finish.
Roméo Beney opened the scoring three minutes after the restart before Pedro Santos doubled the advantage in the 81st minute. Óscar Aranda then completed a memorable return to the scoresheet by scoring twice in the closing stages, including a stoppage-time penalty.
The victory gives Famalicão a valuable three points and provides a major boost following the club’s recent managerial uncertainty.
Famalicão Struggle to Break Rio Ave Down
The opening 45 minutes were far more competitive than the final score suggested.
Rio Ave enjoyed 58 per cent possession during the match and attempted to use that control to dictate the tempo. However, possession did not translate into enough clear opportunities, with Famalicão remaining organised and dangerous whenever they moved forward.
The visitors had some of the better chances before the interval, forcing Rio Ave goalkeeper Vítor Hugo into important interventions. Famalicão came close through efforts from Tamás Szűcs and Leonardo Realpe, while Rio Ave struggled to create the kind of openings required to seriously threaten Lazar Carević.
Neither side managed to find the breakthrough before half-time, leaving the contest goalless at the interval.
Despite having more of the ball, Rio Ave had not been able to establish enough attacking authority. Famalicão, meanwhile, appeared increasingly capable of hurting their hosts whenever space opened up.
Beney Produces the Breakthrough
The game changed just three minutes into the second half.
In the 48th minute, Roméo Beney collected the ball, moved inside and produced a superb curling finish to give Famalicão the lead.
It was an outstanding individual effort and provided the breakthrough the visitors had been searching for. Beney’s goal also changed the nature of the contest, forcing Rio Ave to take greater risks in search of an equaliser.
Rio Ave came close to responding when Jalen Blesa found himself through on goal and struck the post in the 73rd minute. The opportunity represented a major chance for the home side to get back into the match, but Carević did enough to prevent the danger from turning into a goal.
Famalicão survived that moment and soon took control again.
Pedro Santos Doubles the Advantage
With the match entering its final stages, Famalicão began finding more space in the attacking areas.
In the 81st minute, Sorriso worked his way down the left before delivering the ball towards Pedro Santos. The midfielder reacted decisively, sending a first-time left-footed effort into the net to make it 2-0.
The second goal was a significant blow for Rio Ave. The hosts had needed to convert their earlier opportunity, but instead found themselves two goals behind with very little time remaining.
Famalicão, on the other hand, sensed that more goals were available.
Aranda Completes the Rout
Óscar Aranda then put the result beyond doubt just four minutes later.
Pedro Santos produced an excellent delivery from the right, and Aranda reacted quickly to meet the ball and finish from close range. The goal made it 3-0 and capped a devastating spell from the visitors.
Aranda was not finished.
Deep into stoppage time, Famalicão were awarded a penalty after a foul inside the area. Aranda stepped forward and confidently sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, completing his brace and sealing a comprehensive 4-0 victory.
The forward’s two late goals were particularly significant because they marked his return to the scoresheet after a lengthy period away from that particular achievement.
Óscar Aranda: Man of the Match
Óscar Aranda was the standout performer for Famalicão and earns the Man of the Match award for NewsVaultHQ.
The forward made a decisive impact despite entering the game late. His two goals turned an already comfortable Famalicão lead into a emphatic victory, while his movement inside the penalty area gave Rio Ave’s defence another problem to deal with.
His first goal showed his attacking instinct as he reacted quickly to Pedro Santos’ delivery. His second demonstrated composure under pressure, with Aranda calmly converting the stoppage-time penalty to complete his brace.
His performance was especially important given the context surrounding his return. Aranda had been absent from the goals for an extended period, making his late contribution an ideal way to announce his return.
Although Beney provided the spectacular opening goal and Pedro Santos scored once while also contributing an assist, Aranda’s two-goal contribution made him the decisive figure in the final stages.
Zerozero also selected Aranda as its best player of the match, highlighting the importance of his brace in Famalicão’s convincing victory.
A Major Boost for Famalicão
The 4-0 victory represents an important result for Famalicão at a time when the club has been dealing with uncertainty on the coaching front.
Ricardo Silva took charge on an interim basis following Carlos Carvalhal’s departure, and the response from the players was emphatic. Famalicão remained disciplined during the difficult first half before producing a much more aggressive attacking display after the break.
The visitors finished with 42 per cent possession but made their opportunities count. They registered 12 total shots compared with Rio Ave’s seven and put five efforts on target, underlining their greater efficiency in front of goal.
Rio Ave, meanwhile, will be left frustrated by the scale of the defeat. The hosts had more possession and enjoyed periods of control, but they could not turn that advantage into enough meaningful chances.
The result leaves Famalicão with renewed confidence heading into their next fixtures, while Rio Ave must quickly recover from a heavy home defeat.
For Famalicão, however, the night belonged to their second-half ruthlessness. Beney opened the door, Santos widened the gap and Aranda slammed it shut with two late goals.
A goalless first half eventually gave way to a four-goal statement from Famalicão — and a memorable night for Aranda.
