FC Lugano delivered a stunning performance in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday night, defeating Getafe 5-2 at the Coliseum in a seven-goal encounter that was decided by ruthless finishing, quick transitions and an impressive response from the Swiss side.

The visitors produced one of the most memorable European victories in the club’s recent history, recovering from an early setback to score five times against a Getafe side that dominated possession and created plenty of opportunities but could not match Lugano’s efficiency in front of goal.

The result means Lugano have now won both of their opening two matches in the Conference League League Phase, giving them six points and putting them in an excellent position early in the competition. Getafe, meanwhile, are still searching for their first victory after beginning their campaign with a draw before suffering a heavy home defeat.

The match was played at a remarkable pace from the opening whistle, with both teams finding the net inside the first three minutes.

Getafe strike first before Lugano respond immediately

Getafe needed just two minutes to take the lead through Iván Azón.

The forward took advantage of a mistake in the Lugano defence before finding the back of the net with a low effort, giving the home supporters an early reason to believe that their team could secure an important European victory.

However, Lugano’s response was almost immediate.

Just a minute after falling behind, Albian Ajeti brought the visitors level. Daniel Dos Santos created the opening from the left before delivering the ball into the area, where Ajeti reacted quickly to finish from close range.

The equaliser changed the mood of the match almost instantly.

Instead of allowing Getafe to build confidence from their early advantage, Lugano continued to attack and began finding spaces behind the Spanish defence.

The visitors completed their turnaround in the seventh minute.

Ajeti played an important role once again, getting involved in the move before setting up Yanis Cimignani, who finished to put Lugano 2-1 ahead.

Three goals had been scored inside the opening seven minutes, setting the tone for an extraordinary night at the Coliseum.

Getafe attempted to regain control, but Lugano remained dangerous whenever they moved forward. Their attacking approach was direct, while their players were willing to take advantage of every mistake made by the home side.

Ajeti strikes again before half-time

Lugano’s pressure eventually produced another reward in the 26th minute.

Uran Bislimi helped initiate the move before Dereck Moncada delivered the ball into a dangerous area. Ajeti found the right position and produced a composed finish to score his second goal of the evening.

The goal gave Lugano a 3-1 advantage and completed an extraordinary first-half performance from the Swiss club.

For Getafe, the two-goal deficit created a difficult situation. They had started the match positively, but their defensive organisation began to collapse as Lugano repeatedly exploited openings.

The home side still created opportunities before the interval, but the visitors remained the more dangerous team when attacking with purpose.

Ajeti even came close to completing his hat-trick before half-time, but Getafe goalkeeper David Soria made a save to prevent the Lugano striker from adding another goal.

By the break, Lugano had established a 3-1 lead and had every reason to believe that an important away victory was within reach.

Lugano extend their advantage after the break

Getafe made several changes at half-time as manager José Bordalás attempted to change the direction of the game.

The substitutions were designed to give the hosts more attacking energy, but Lugano immediately delivered another blow.

Five minutes into the second half, Mattia Zanotti won possession and drove forward before sending the ball into the area. Moncada cleverly allowed the delivery to run through, creating space for Bislimi.

The Lugano midfielder took advantage of the opportunity and fired the ball under the crossbar to make it 4-1.

At that point, Getafe were facing a huge challenge.

The Spanish side had more of the ball throughout the match, finishing with around 60 percent possession, while their 26 total shots were significantly higher than Lugano’s 10. Yet those numbers did not tell the full story of the contest.

Lugano were simply more clinical.

The Swiss side did not need long periods of possession to create danger. Instead, they were able to turn defensive recoveries into attacking opportunities and punish Getafe whenever the home side left spaces open.

Getafe continued pushing forward and eventually reduced the deficit in the 74th minute.

A dangerous delivery from the left created confusion inside the Lugano penalty area. After the goalkeeper initially stopped the attempt, Borja Mayoral reacted quickest and finished from close range.

The goal made it 4-2 and briefly raised hopes of an unlikely comeback.

Getafe push forward but Lugano hold firm

The final stages became increasingly tense as Getafe threw more players forward.

The home side had opportunities to score again, particularly through crosses and set-piece situations, but Lugano’s defensive organisation held up under pressure.

Getafe’s attacking statistics showed how much pressure they applied. They finished with 15 corners and repeatedly attempted to deliver the ball into the penalty area. However, Lugano remained disciplined and protected their two-goal advantage.

The visitors also benefited from an excellent performance from goalkeeper David von Ballmoos, who made several important interventions when Getafe threatened.

Rather than panicking under pressure, Lugano continued looking for opportunities on the counterattack.

That approach eventually produced the final goal of the evening.

In the second minute of stoppage time, Kevin Behrens took advantage of a mistake during Getafe’s build-up. He won possession in a dangerous area, carried the ball into the box and calmly finished past Soria.

The goal made it 5-2 and effectively ended the contest.

It was a fitting conclusion to Lugano’s performance because the goal once again demonstrated the difference between the two sides: Getafe had possession and territory, while Lugano had the ruthlessness required to turn important moments into goals.

The final whistle confirmed a remarkable 5-2 victory for the Swiss visitors.

A historic European night for Lugano

The victory represents more than three points for Lugano.

According to the club, the five goals marked the first time they had scored five times in a single match during the League Phase of a UEFA competition. They also moved onto six points after two Conference League fixtures, following their opening-day victory over Red Star.

Lugano’s performance was particularly impressive because they achieved the result away from home against a Getafe team from one of Europe’s major domestic leagues.

Their ability to recover from conceding after only two minutes showed strong character. Instead of becoming nervous after the early setback, they responded by scoring three times in the opening 26 minutes.

The visitors also showed excellent game management after taking control of the contest.

Even when Getafe increased the pressure in the second half, Lugano did not abandon their attacking threat. Their defensive work, combined with their willingness to counter, allowed them to survive the difficult periods and eventually score a fifth goal.

Getafe will have plenty to reflect on following the defeat. Their 60 percent possession and 26 shots demonstrate that they were capable of controlling large portions of the match, but their inability to convert that pressure proved costly.

The defeat also leaves them without a win after two Conference League matches, making their upcoming fixtures increasingly important.

Albian Ajeti named Man of the Match

While Lugano produced an outstanding team performance, Albian Ajeti was the standout player on the night.

The striker scored twice in the first half and played a major role in turning the match around after Getafe had taken the lead.

His first goal arrived only a minute after Azón had opened the scoring, giving Lugano an immediate response. His second goal in the 26th minute then gave the visitors a two-goal cushion and placed Getafe under enormous pressure.

Ajeti was also involved in Cimignani’s goal, making his contribution to Lugano’s first-half comeback even more significant.

His movement caused constant problems for the Getafe defence, with the forward repeatedly finding spaces between defenders and giving his teammates options in the final third.

Ajeti completed the night with three shots on target from three attempts and was credited with a Sofascore rating of 8.3, the highest rating of any player involved in the match. He also completed eight of his ten passes, created a key pass and won three duels before being substituted in the 66th minute.

Sofascore also reported that Ajeti was selected as the Player of the Match by supporters, receiving 58 of 102 votes.

His performance was important not only because of the goals but because of when they arrived.

The first strike stopped Getafe from enjoying their early lead, while the second established the two-goal advantage that allowed Lugano to approach the remainder of the match with greater confidence.

Although other Lugano players also made major contributions, including Bislimi, Cimignani, Zanotti, Dos Santos and goalkeeper von Ballmoos, Ajeti’s two goals made him the natural choice for the individual award.

Lugano send a warning to the rest of the competition

Lugano’s 5-2 victory will undoubtedly attract attention across the Conference League.

They showed that they possess the attacking quality to punish mistakes, the organisation to defend a lead and the composure to deal with pressure away from home.

Their six points from two matches provide an excellent foundation for the remainder of the League Phase.

For Getafe, the task is now to respond quickly. Their ability to generate possession and shots was not enough against Lugano, and the defensive problems exposed during the match will need to be addressed.

The night belonged entirely to Lugano, however.

They arrived in Spain looking for another positive European result and left with one of the biggest victories in their history. Five goals, six points and a statement performance have placed the Swiss side among the teams to watch in the competition.

At the centre of it all was Ajeti, whose two-goal display helped turn an early setback into a memorable away triumph.
