Monaco Cruise Past Freiburg as Brunner, Camara and Fati Secure Conference League Win
AS Monaco produced a clinical second-half display to defeat SC Freiburg 3-0 in the UEFA Conference League, with Paris Brunner, Lamine Camara and Ansu Fati finding the net at Stade Louis-II.

AS Monaco continued their strong start to the UEFA Conference League with a convincing 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg at the Stade Louis-II on Thursday night.
The French side had to remain patient during long periods of a competitive encounter, but they eventually found a way through just before half-time before taking complete control of the closing stages.
Paris Brunner opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, giving Monaco a crucial advantage heading into the interval. Lamine Camara doubled the lead in the 83rd minute before substitute Ansu Fati completed the scoring in added time.
The result gave Monaco another important European victory and maintained their perfect record in the Conference League after two matches. The victory was also a strong response following their disappointing domestic defeat to Lorient at the weekend.
Monaco make a patient start
The opening stages at Stade Louis-II did not immediately suggest that Monaco would eventually win by three goals.
Freiburg arrived with confidence after their positive start to the European campaign, and the German side were prepared to compete for possession rather than simply sit deep and absorb pressure.
Monaco, however, looked dangerous whenever they managed to move the ball quickly through midfield.
The hosts’ first major opportunity came when Mamadou Coulibaly attempted to make the most of a looping ball from Edan Diop inside the penalty area. His effort forced Freiburg goalkeeper Mio Backhaus into action, giving the visitors an early warning of the threat Monaco could pose.
Backhaus was soon called upon again when Brunner found space in the attacking area. The goalkeeper managed to prevent the young forward from breaking the deadlock, but Monaco continued to look increasingly comfortable as the first half progressed.
Freiburg also had their moments, particularly when they were able to move the ball into the final third and attack Monaco’s defensive shape.
The visitors’ plans were disrupted in the 15th minute, however, when Yannick Engelhardt was forced off after suffering an injury. Patrick Osterhage came on to replace him, forcing Julian Schuster to make an early adjustment to his midfield.
Despite the interruption, Freiburg remained competitive.
Monaco were unable to create a sustained stream of clear chances, but they continued to show more threat in the decisive areas of the pitch.
That patience eventually paid off.
Brunner produces a moment of quality
Just when it appeared that the two teams would go into the break level, Brunner produced the individual quality Monaco needed.
The forward received the ball from Diop and immediately went to work against Max Rosenfelder. Brunner lifted the ball over his opponent before continuing his run towards goal, showing impressive composure to finish inside the near post.
The goal arrived in the second minute of added time and changed the entire complexion of the contest.
Instead of Freiburg entering the dressing room with confidence from surviving Monaco’s pressure, the German side suddenly had to find a response after conceding at the worst possible moment.
Brunner’s finish was not simply important because it put Monaco ahead. It demonstrated the attacking talent that has made the forward one of the most dangerous players in the Monaco side this season.
The goal was his eighth in all competitions this season, underlining his growing importance to Filipe Luís’ team.
Monaco therefore went into half-time leading 1-0.
Freiburg respond after the break
The second half brought a different Freiburg side.
Schuster’s team increased their intensity and began pushing Monaco backwards, looking for an equaliser that would completely change the momentum of the game.
The visitors were much more adventurous after the interval and created pressure through corners and attacking set pieces.
One of their best opportunities came shortly after the restart when Lukas Kübler found himself in a promising position following a corner. His initial effort was stopped by Monaco goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecký before the follow-up was blocked.
That sequence gave Freiburg belief.
For a period, Monaco were forced to defend more deeply than they had during the opening half. Freiburg circulated the ball well and repeatedly attempted to find openings around the Monaco penalty area.
The German side’s improved performance was recognised even by their own manager after the match. Schuster admitted that his team had not started with enough energy but praised their reaction following the interval.
Yet the biggest problem for Freiburg was their inability to turn possession and pressure into a goal.
They were able to move forward, but Monaco’s defenders remained disciplined around the penalty area.
The hosts also had the pace and technical quality to punish Freiburg whenever space appeared behind the defensive line.
That became increasingly important as the match entered its final stages.
Monaco punish Freiburg late
With Freiburg searching desperately for an equaliser, Monaco began finding more room to attack.
The introduction of Ansu Fati proved particularly significant.
The former Barcelona forward immediately added another dimension to Monaco’s attack, offering movement and directness from the left side.
In the 83rd minute, Fati was involved in the move that effectively ended Freiburg’s hopes of taking anything from the match.
After a quick Monaco attack, Fati received the ball inside the penalty area and attempted to beat Backhaus. The goalkeeper managed to stop the initial effort, but the rebound fell perfectly for Camara.
The Senegalese midfielder reacted quickly and fired the loose ball into the net.
Monaco were 2-0 ahead.
The goal was a reward for Camara’s overall contribution throughout the evening. He had worked tirelessly in midfield, helping Monaco deal with Freiburg’s pressure while also providing an attacking outlet when the opportunity presented itself.
The timing of the second goal was crucial.
Freiburg had spent much of the second half believing that one goal would bring them back into the contest. Instead, Monaco’s counter-attacking threat produced the decisive breakthrough.
From that moment, the result was effectively beyond Freiburg.
Fati adds the finishing touch
Monaco were not finished.
Freiburg continued to search for a consolation goal, but the hosts remained dangerous on the break.
In the first minute of added time, Fati finally got his own reward.
Matthis Abline supplied the pass, allowing Fati to receive the ball inside the penalty area. The Spanish forward showed excellent composure, turning before producing a left-footed finish into the bottom corner.
Backhaus had little chance of stopping the attempt.
The goal completed a 3-0 victory and provided Fati with a memorable contribution after coming off the bench.
For Monaco, it was the perfect way to close out the contest.
They had resisted Freiburg’s second-half pressure, scored when the opportunities arrived and kept a clean sheet at the other end.
The numbers behind Monaco’s victory
The statistics underline an interesting aspect of the match.
Freiburg enjoyed 52 percent of the possession according to the match statistics shown after the final whistle, while Monaco had 48 percent.
That figure might appear surprising considering the final score, but it highlights how Monaco approached the game.
They did not need to dominate possession to control the important moments.
Instead, the French side concentrated on defending efficiently, moving the ball quickly when possession was regained and making the most of the opportunities presented to them.
The shot numbers were also relatively close, with Monaco registering 11 attempts and Freiburg 12.
However, Monaco were far more effective with the chances they created.
The hosts recorded seven shots on target compared with just one for Freiburg in the statistics displayed from the match. Monaco also had two blocked shots, while Freiburg had five.
There were no penalties awarded during the game, while both teams were credited with one big chance missed.
The statistics therefore point towards a match in which Freiburg were competitive in terms of possession and overall attempts but lacked the cutting edge required in the final third.
Monaco, by contrast, were clinical when the decisive moments arrived.
Man of the Match: Edan Diop
While Brunner, Camara and Fati deserved attention for their goals, Edan Diop was named Flashscore’s Man of the Match for Monaco’s victory.
The recognition was particularly deserved because Diop’s contribution went beyond what can be measured simply through goals and assists.
The midfielder was heavily involved in Monaco’s work in the centre of the pitch and played an important role in helping the hosts move the ball forward.
His contribution was also directly connected to the opening goal.
Diop provided the ball that allowed Brunner to produce his outstanding individual moment shortly before half-time. Brunner then completed the move himself, but the quality of Diop’s involvement helped create the opportunity.
His performance was also important during the period when Freiburg increased the pressure after the interval.
Rather than allowing the visitors to completely take control of the match, Monaco’s midfield continued to compete for second balls and disrupt Freiburg’s rhythm.
Diop’s ability to remain composed in possession gave Monaco another route out whenever they recovered the ball.
That became especially valuable as Freiburg pushed higher up the pitch.
His display also reflected the balance Monaco needed from their midfield. The team could not afford to focus exclusively on attacking because Freiburg were capable of creating problems when given too much freedom.
Diop helped provide that connection between Monaco’s defensive and attacking phases.
Although he did not score himself, his influence could be seen in the way Monaco transitioned from defence into attack.
His involvement in Brunner’s opener was arguably the clearest example.
The award also highlights that Monaco’s victory was not built around one individual. Brunner supplied the moment of brilliance, Camara delivered the second goal and Fati finished the contest, but Diop helped give the team the structure required to put those attacking players in positions where they could make the difference.
A strong European response for Monaco
The victory carries added significance because Monaco entered the game after suffering a 1-0 defeat away to Lorient in Ligue 1.
That result had interrupted an otherwise impressive run, making a strong response in Europe important for Filipe Luís and his players.
They delivered exactly that.
The 3-0 scoreline means Monaco have now won both of their opening Conference League matches and remain perfect in the competition.
Their European campaign has therefore started with considerable promise, particularly considering the manner in which they handled Freiburg.
There was no need for Monaco to dominate every phase of the match.
They were patient when Freiburg were organised, clinical when opportunities appeared and ruthless once the visitors began taking risks.
That combination is often what separates teams capable of progressing deep into European competitions from those who struggle when matches become difficult.
Freiburg, meanwhile, will have to recover quickly.
Their second-half performance showed that they were capable of causing Monaco problems, but their lack of efficiency in front of goal ultimately proved costly.
They created pressure without finding the finish required to turn that pressure into a goal.
Monaco punished them for it.
What the result means
For Monaco, the victory is another important step under Filipe Luís.
The manager has overseen a side that continues to show resilience and attacking quality, even when matches do not initially go according to plan.
The ability to win without controlling possession for the majority of the game could become particularly valuable as the Conference League progresses.
Monaco’s next challenge will be maintaining the same level of concentration when the European schedule becomes more demanding.
For now, however, the club can enjoy a convincing home victory.
Brunner’s spectacular finish gave them the breakthrough, Camara’s opportunistic strike provided breathing room and Fati’s late effort completed the job.
Diop’s all-round performance earned him the Man of the Match recognition, while the collective effort ensured Monaco walked away with another clean sheet and another three points.
The final score may suggest a straightforward evening for the French side, but Freiburg’s second-half pressure showed that Monaco had to work for the result.
Ultimately, the hosts were simply better at making their decisive moments count.
That clinical edge was the difference at Stade Louis-II.
Monaco now have maximum points from their first two Conference League matches, three goals from this encounter and another clean sheet to their name.
More importantly, they have demonstrated that even when an opponent controls significant portions of possession, they possess enough quality and discipline to turn a close contest into a convincing victory.
For a side looking to make an impact in Europe, that is an encouraging sign.
