Sporting Braga produced a strong performance at the Estádio Municipal de Braga on Thursday night, defeating KAA Gent 2-0 in the UEFA Europa Conference League league phase.

The Portuguese side took control early and maintained their advantage throughout the contest, with Victor Gómez opening the scoring before Gabri Martínez sealed the victory in the second half. The result gave Braga three valuable points in their European campaign.

Braga make perfect start

Braga needed only three minutes to break the deadlock.

Victor Gómez found the back of the net in the opening stages after a promising attacking move, immediately putting Gent on the back foot. The early goal gave the hosts confidence and allowed them to dictate much of the first half.

Gent tried to respond, but Braga remained composed and continued to create opportunities. The visitors struggled to turn their possession into clear chances, while Braga looked more dangerous whenever they moved forward.

Despite having 48 per cent possession, Gent registered very little threat in front of goal. Braga, meanwhile, finished the match with 22 attempts and 10 shots on target, underlining their attacking superiority.

Braga went into the interval with a 1-0 advantage.

Gent unable to find an equaliser

The second half began with Gent searching for a way back into the match.

The Belgian side pushed forward more aggressively and came close to levelling the contest when Momodou Sonko found himself with a good opportunity inside the area. However, Braga goalkeeper Bernardo Fontes produced an important save to preserve his team’s lead.

That moment proved significant as Braga gradually regained control.

The hosts continued to threaten at the other end, with Ricardo Horta and other attacking players forcing Gent’s defence to remain alert. Braga’s ability to combine possession with direct attacking moves kept the visitors from building sustained pressure.

Braga eventually found the second goal in the 76th minute.

Gabri Martínez finished from inside the box after being set up by Victor Gómez. The goal was initially subjected to a VAR review after an offside decision, but the effort was eventually awarded, giving Braga a two-goal cushion.

With Braga leading 2-0, Gent struggled to produce the response required to change the outcome.

Braga finish strongly

The final stages belonged largely to the hosts.

Martínez remained a threat after his goal, while Braga continued looking for opportunities to add a third. Horta came close when his effort struck the crossbar, and goalkeeper Davy Roef was also forced into further saves as Braga pressed forward.

Gent’s attacking efforts produced little in comparison. The visitors finished with only one shot on target, while Braga recorded 10, highlighting the difference between the two sides in the final third.

The referee eventually brought the contest to an end with Braga comfortably securing a 2-0 victory.

The result was particularly significant for Braga as it came in Franclim Carvalho’s first match in charge. The Portuguese side also bounced back strongly in the competition after their opening-round defeat, giving their European campaign an important boost.

Braga’s control and Gent’s missed opportunity

One of the clearest differences between the two sides was the quality of the chances created. Braga did not simply rely on their early goal; they continued to threaten throughout the match and repeatedly tested Gent’s defence.

The statistics reflected that advantage. Braga finished with 22 shots compared with Gent’s 10, while the Portuguese side managed 10 attempts on target. Gent, by contrast, could only register one shot on target across the entire match. Braga also created three big chances and recorded six corners, showing how frequently they managed to put pressure on the visitors.

Gent did have moments when they could have changed the direction of the game. Their best opportunity came in the second half when Momodou Sonko found space inside the penalty area, but Bernardo Fontes reacted quickly to make an important save. Had Gent converted that chance, the match could have become far more uncomfortable for Braga.

Instead, Braga remained patient and eventually punished Gent again. The second goal was particularly important because it came after the visitors had begun to show more attacking intent. João Moutinho’s pass released Victor Gómez, who delivered a first-time cross for Gabri Martínez to finish. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but a VAR review confirmed the effort and gave Braga the breathing room they needed.

From there, Braga looked increasingly comfortable. Gent continued searching for a response, but the home side defended their advantage well and created further opportunities before the final whistle. The victory ultimately reflected Braga’s greater attacking efficiency and their ability to remain composed when Gent threatened to get back into the contest.

Victor Gómez named Man of the Match

Victor Gómez was the standout player of the night.

The Braga right-back delivered an influential performance at both ends of the pitch, contributing directly to both goals.

He opened the scoring in the third minute before turning provider for Gabri Martínez’s second-half strike. His involvement in the decisive moments made him the most influential player on the field.

Gómez was also effective defensively and maintained his energy throughout the 90 minutes. His performance earned him an 8.7 rating, the highest score among the players in the match.

His overall contribution made the difference. Rather than simply providing width from the right side, Gómez consistently became involved in Braga’s attacking movements while remaining reliable when his team had to defend.

The performance also showed why full-backs can be so important in modern football. Gómez combined defensive responsibility with attacking quality and ultimately played a part in both goals that decided the game.

A valuable win for Braga

Braga’s 2-0 victory was built on efficiency, attacking pressure and defensive discipline.

The hosts had 52 per cent possession compared with Gent’s 48 per cent and created considerably more opportunities. They also recorded six corners to Gent’s three and finished with a higher expected-goals figure, further reflecting their dominance.

Gent showed moments of promise, particularly after the break, but Braga’s defence and goalkeeper Bernardo Fontes dealt with the biggest threats.

For Braga, the victory provides an important platform as they continue their Conference League campaign. With players such as Gómez and Martínez producing decisive moments, the Portuguese club will take confidence from a performance that combined attacking ambition with defensive control.

Most importantly, Braga secured the three points without conceding, while Victor Gómez emerged as the clear Man of the Match after scoring once and assisting another.
