UEFA Europa League
Benfica Cruise Past Omonia As Aursnes Leads 4-1 Europa League Victory
Benfica continued their perfect Europa League campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus, with Fredrik Aursnes producing an outstanding display capped by a goal as the Portuguese side strengthened their position at the top of the league phase.

Benfica maintained their perfect start to the UEFA Europa League with an impressive 4-1 victory over Omonia Nicosia at the GSP Stadium on Thursday night.
The Portuguese giants arrived in Cyprus looking to build on victories over AC Milan and Celtic, and they eventually delivered another strong performance to make it three wins from three matches in the competition.
Although Omonia managed to stay competitive for long periods, Benfica’s quality became increasingly difficult to contain after the interval. The visitors controlled possession, created the greater number of chances and finished the evening with four goals to move onto nine points from their opening three league-phase fixtures.
The result also underlined Benfica’s attacking strength in Europe. After scoring twice against AC Milan and four times against Celtic, Marco Silva’s side once again found the net four times, taking their Europa League tally to 10 goals after three matches. (SL Benfica)
Benfica Make Fast Start
Benfica began the match with greater control and immediately looked comfortable in possession.
The visitors moved the ball patiently from defence into midfield, attempting to pull Omonia away from their defensive shape before attacking the spaces that appeared.
Their pressure eventually produced the opening goal in the 14th minute, although it came through an unfortunate moment for the home side.
Loïc Négo turned the ball into his own net to give Benfica a 1-0 advantage. The goal was not the result of a direct finish from a Benfica attacker, but it rewarded the pressure the Portuguese side had been applying during the opening stages.
Omonia were forced to respond, and rather than allowing the early setback to completely change the game, the Cypriot side gradually found a way back into the contest.
Benfica continued to enjoy more of the ball, but Omonia showed determination and remained organised enough to prevent the visitors from turning their possession into a second goal.
That resistance eventually paid off.
Kakoullis Brings Omonia Level
Omonia found their equaliser in the 42nd minute through Andronikos Kakoullis.
The forward took advantage of an opportunity inside the penalty area and finished to bring the score level at 1-1 shortly before half-time.
The goal changed the mood around the stadium and gave the hosts renewed belief.
For Benfica, it was a frustrating conclusion to a first half in which they had controlled much of the match without creating enough separation on the scoreboard.
At the break, the teams went into the dressing rooms level, despite Benfica having shown the greater attacking intent.
The 1-1 scoreline also reflected Omonia’s ability to stay in the game despite Benfica’s territorial advantage.
However, the second half would tell a very different story.
Pavlidis Restores Benfica’s Lead
Benfica came out after half-time with greater intensity and immediately looked more dangerous.
The visitors began attacking with more speed, while their movement around Omonia’s penalty area became increasingly difficult for the home defence to handle.
Only four minutes into the second half, Benfica regained the lead.
Vangelis Pavlidis made it 2-1 in the 49th minute, putting the visitors back in front and giving them the platform they needed to take control of the match.
The Greek striker’s goal was particularly important because it prevented Omonia from settling into the second half with the confidence that had carried them through the closing stages of the first period.
Instead, Benfica had restored their advantage almost immediately.
Omonia still attempted to respond, but Benfica were now creating more openings and finding greater freedom in the final third.
Pavlidis remained a constant threat to the Omonia defence, while Benfica’s midfield continued to dictate the rhythm of the contest.
The hosts had moments when they looked capable of causing problems, but Benfica’s greater depth and quality gradually began to show.
Aursnes Puts Benfica In Control
The decisive moment arrived in the 76th minute.
Fredrik Aursnes scored Benfica’s third goal to put the visitors 3-1 ahead and effectively break Omonia’s resistance.
The goal was the perfect reward for what had already been an excellent individual performance from the Norwegian midfielder.
Aursnes was involved in several important aspects of Benfica’s play. He helped the team retain possession, provided an outlet in midfield and contributed to the attacking phase when opportunities presented themselves.
His goal demonstrated another side of his game.
After Benfica took advantage of an error during Omonia’s attempt to play out from the back, Aursnes found himself in a dangerous position inside the penalty area. He remained composed and finished decisively to give Benfica a two-goal cushion.
At 3-1, the match began to feel beyond Omonia’s reach.
The hosts had competed admirably for much of the evening, but Benfica’s ability to punish mistakes made the difference.
Prestianni Completes The Rout
Benfica were not finished.
With Omonia pushing forward in search of a way back into the match, spaces began appearing behind the home defence.
Benfica took advantage of one of those openings in the 85th minute when Gianluca Prestianni scored the fourth goal.
The Argentine winger was in the right place to finish off a fast attacking move and put the final score beyond doubt.
The goal also highlighted Benfica’s strength from the bench.
The Portuguese side had enough quality among their substitutes to maintain their attacking threat deep into the game, even as Omonia attempted to change the momentum.
Prestianni’s goal completed a second-half spell in which Benfica scored three times without reply.
From 1-1 at half-time, the visitors transformed the match into a comfortable victory.
Benfica’s Numbers Tell The Story
The statistics further demonstrated Benfica’s dominance.
According to the match statistics, Benfica enjoyed around 64 per cent possession compared with Omonia’s 36 per cent. They also produced 23 total shots, more than three times Omonia’s seven.
Ten of Benfica’s attempts were on target, while Omonia managed five efforts that tested Anatoliy Trubin.
Benfica also completed significantly more passes, recording 625 accurate passes compared with Omonia’s 323. Their passing accuracy reached 88 per cent, another indication of how effectively the visitors controlled the game.
The difference in attacking pressure was particularly noticeable.
Benfica registered seven blocked shots and five corners, while Omonia were unable to record a blocked attempt according to the match statistics.
The visitors also had 37 touches inside the opposition penalty area compared with Omonia’s 16.
Those figures help explain why Benfica eventually created enough opportunities to turn a close first half into a comfortable victory.
Omonia did not simply surrender the match, but Benfica’s sustained pressure eventually became too much for the hosts.
Fredrik Aursnes Named Man of the Match
While several Benfica players played important roles, Fredrik Aursnes stood out as the Man of the Match.
The Norwegian midfielder produced a performance that combined intelligence, discipline and attacking contribution.
Aursnes was not simply effective because he scored.
His influence could be seen throughout the match as Benfica looked to control the midfield and move the ball into dangerous areas. He helped provide balance to the team while also contributing to the attacking moves that eventually overwhelmed Omonia.
His performance became even more impressive when he added the third goal.
At a stage when Omonia were still hoping to find a route back into the match, Aursnes punished their mistake and produced a composed finish to make it 3-1.
That goal effectively changed the complexion of the contest.
His overall display earned him a 9.0/10 rating and the highest individual rating in one of the post-match player assessments, which also identified him as the match MVP.
The midfielder’s contribution also reflected Benfica’s collective performance. Rather than relying entirely on their forwards, the Portuguese side received attacking production from midfield, with Aursnes providing an important goal at a crucial moment.
That versatility is one of the reasons his performance deserves particular recognition.
Pavlidis, Echeverri And Prestianni Also Impress
Aursnes was not the only Benfica player to leave Cyprus with credit.
Pavlidis played an important role in the victory with his 49th-minute goal, while Claudio Echeverri was heavily involved in Benfica’s attacking play.
Echeverri’s movement and creativity helped Benfica create opportunities, particularly during the transition from the first half to the second.
Pavlidis also continued to cause problems for the Omonia defence after scoring. He came close to adding another goal when his effort struck the post in the second half.
Prestianni also made his contribution count after coming off the bench, finishing the match with Benfica’s fourth goal.
For Omonia, Kakoullis deserves credit for keeping the hosts in contention with his equaliser. Jaden Montnor also provided an attacking threat and was among the home side’s brighter performers, according to post-match assessments.
However, Omonia ultimately struggled to maintain the same level of resistance after Benfica regained the lead.
Benfica Continue Perfect Europa League Run
The victory leaves Benfica with nine points from three matches in the Europa League league phase.
Their campaign has been particularly impressive because they have already secured victories against three different opponents while scoring 10 goals and conceding only two.
They began with a 2-0 away victory over AC Milan before defeating Celtic 4-1 and then producing another 4-1 result against Omonia.
Benfica’s latest victory also keeps them at the top of the league-phase standings after three rounds, with their perfect record intact.
For Marco Silva, the biggest positive will be the way his team responded after Omonia equalised.
Rather than becoming frustrated by the 1-1 scoreline, Benfica returned from half-time with greater urgency and eventually turned their superiority into goals.
Omonia can take some encouragement from the way they competed for more than an hour, particularly their ability to recover from the early own goal and level the match before the interval.
But Benfica demonstrated why they are among the teams expected to challenge strongly in this season’s Europa League.
Their possession, passing quality, attacking depth and ability to punish mistakes proved decisive.
Most importantly, they showed that they can win in different ways. When the first half became difficult, they remained patient. When the opportunity arrived after the break, they attacked with greater intensity.
Aursnes’ performance perfectly represented that improvement.
The midfielder helped Benfica control the contest before eventually delivering the goal that gave his team the breathing room they needed.
With three victories from three matches, Benfica have made a powerful statement at the beginning of their European campaign.
And if their early form is anything to go by, the Portuguese side will be one of the teams closely watched as the Europa league phase develops.
