Bournemouth Humble AC Milan 3-0 as Cherries Continue Perfect Europa League Start
Bournemouth produced one of the biggest European nights in the club’s history as they defeated 10-man AC Milan 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium, with Justin Kluivert, Marcus Tavernier and Amine Adli on target.

Bournemouth produced a statement performance in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night, defeating AC Milan 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium to maintain their perfect start to the competition.
The Cherries entered the encounter knowing they were facing one of European football’s most decorated clubs, but there was little sign of intimidation as Marco Rose’s side took control early and never allowed Milan to recover.
The victory means Bournemouth have now won all three of their Europa League matches this season. They had already defeated Real Sociedad and Sturm Graz before putting seven-time European champions Milan to the sword.
The result was shaped by a dramatic first half in which Bournemouth scored twice from the penalty spot, while Milan were reduced to ten men following the dismissal of goalkeeper and captain Mike Maignan.
Bournemouth eventually added a third goal late in the contest through Amine Adli, completing a memorable night for the home supporters.
Kluivert Gives Bournemouth Early Advantage
Bournemouth needed just eight minutes to break the deadlock.
The opening goal came after Evanilson’s header struck the raised hand of Milan defender Koni De Winter inside the penalty area. Following a VAR review, referee Vassilis Fotias pointed to the spot.
Justin Kluivert stepped forward and showed composure under pressure, sending Maignan the wrong way to give Bournemouth a 1-0 lead.
The goal immediately increased the confidence of the hosts, who continued to push forward rather than retreat into a defensive shape.
Milan attempted to settle themselves after conceding, but Bournemouth’s energy and intensity made it difficult for the visitors to establish sustained control.
The Cherries also benefited from the support of a lively home crowd, with their players continuing to attack the spaces around Milan’s defence.
Maignan Red Card Changes Everything
The turning point arrived before the half-hour mark.
Milan were preparing to defend a Bournemouth corner when Maignan became involved in an altercation with Tyler Adams. The goalkeeper pushed the Bournemouth midfielder in the face, prompting the referee to show him a straight red card after a VAR review.
The dismissal left Milan facing more than an hour with ten players and forced Ruben Amorim to make an immediate change.
Lorenzo Torriani came on to replace Maignan, while Omari Hutchinson was sacrificed to restore the goalkeeper position.
The situation became even worse for Milan moments later when Bournemouth were awarded another penalty.
With the visitors still trying to reorganise after the red card, Marcus Tavernier took responsibility from twelve yards.
The Bournemouth midfielder remained calm and sent Torriani the wrong way, doubling his side’s advantage in the 32nd minute.
At 2-0 down and playing with ten men, Milan faced an enormous challenge. Bournemouth, meanwhile, had complete control of the occasion.
Bournemouth Stay in Control After the Break
The second half began with Milan attempting to change the direction of the match.
Amorim introduced Adrien Rabiot and Bartesaghi as he looked for a response, but Bournemouth continued to dominate possession and territory.
The statistics reflected the difference between the two teams.
Bournemouth finished the match with 64 percent possession and registered 20 attempts compared with just three from Milan. Seven of the home side’s efforts were on target, while Milan failed to register a shot on target.
Those numbers demonstrated how difficult the evening was for the visitors.
Bournemouth were not simply protecting a two-goal advantage. They continued looking for another goal and repeatedly tested the Milan defence.
The hosts created opportunities through open play and set pieces, with Milan struggling to produce the attacking threat normally expected from a club of their stature.
Bournemouth also remained disciplined defensively. Their back line prevented Milan from finding the space required to build meaningful attacks, while the midfield kept the pressure on whenever the visitors attempted to move forward.
Milan managed to create occasional moments, but Bournemouth’s defensive structure ensured that those opportunities did not turn into serious danger.
Adli Produces the Perfect Finish
The final blow arrived in the 84th minute.
Amine Adli had only recently entered the match when Bournemouth won a free-kick in a dangerous position following a foul on Ben Gannon-Doak.
Adli took responsibility and produced a superb strike.
The substitute curled the ball through the Milan wall and into the net, leaving Torriani with no realistic chance of stopping it.
The goal made it 3-0 and turned an already impressive victory into a commanding statement.
There was still time for Bournemouth to threaten a fourth.
Rayan came close late on after getting onto the end of a cross, but Torriani produced an excellent fingertip save to deny him.
It mattered little in the end.
The final whistle confirmed a 3-0 victory and another three points for Bournemouth in their first European campaign.
A Historic Night for Bournemouth
The significance of the result goes beyond the scoreline.
Bournemouth are experiencing European football at this level for the first time, yet they have approached their opening matches with remarkable confidence.
Three victories from three matches have given the Cherries nine points from nine available, placing them among the teams with perfect records in the Europa League league phase.
Their latest victory was particularly impressive because of the opponent.
AC Milan may not currently possess the same dominance they enjoyed during some of their greatest European eras, but their history remains enormous. Bournemouth defeating such a famous name by three goals will therefore stand as one of the most memorable results in the club’s history.
The performance also showed that Bournemouth are not relying on a single player.
Kluivert provided the early breakthrough, Tavernier converted the second penalty, Adli produced a spectacular late free-kick and the defence remained composed throughout.
Evanilson also played an important role, with his header contributing to the incident that produced the opening penalty.
The collective performance was arguably more important than any individual contribution.
Man of the Match: António Silva
While the goals naturally attracted most of the attention, Bournemouth’s defensive performance deserves equal recognition.
António Silva was named Player of the Match by Sofascore after producing an outstanding display at the heart of the Bournemouth defence. He received an 8.5 rating and also led the fan vote, collecting 354 of 767 votes.
Silva’s performance was particularly important because Bournemouth were able to maintain a clean sheet against a club with Milan’s attacking pedigree.
The Portuguese defender remained composed throughout the contest and helped Bournemouth prevent Milan from creating clear opportunities.
With Milan reduced to ten men, there was always a possibility that Bournemouth could become careless and allow the visitors back into the match. Silva and those around him ensured that did not happen.
His positioning, defensive awareness and ability to deal with Milan’s attacking attempts helped provide the foundation for Bournemouth’s dominance.
Although Tavernier and Adli had decisive moments in front of goal, Silva’s contribution at the back completed the performance.
His display was a reminder that dominant victories are not built solely on goals. Bournemouth’s ability to remain organised and disciplined without the ball was just as important as their finishing.
Milan Left With Questions
For AC Milan, the defeat will raise serious questions about their performance and discipline.
The red card completely changed the contest, but the visitors had already fallen behind before Maignan’s dismissal.
Conceding two penalties in the opening 32 minutes made their task extremely difficult, while losing their captain and goalkeeper added another layer of pressure.

Bournemouth, by contrast, remained aggressive until the final stages.
The result leaves Milan needing to respond quickly in their remaining Europa League fixtures, while Bournemouth can look ahead with growing belief.
For the Cherries, this was more than another three points.
It was a night when a club still writing its European history defeated one of the biggest names in the competition, scored three times, kept a clean sheet and maintained a 100 percent record.
Bournemouth now have every reason to believe their Europa League adventure could become much more than a brief first appearance.
