Cristiano Ronaldo Provisionally Suspended by Portuguese Federation After National Team Walkout
Cristiano Ronaldo faces a provisional suspension after leaving Portugal’s camp, with the captain accepting responsibility while remaining committed to the national team.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following his decision to leave Portugal’s national team camp during the latest international break.
The federation opened disciplinary proceedings against the 41-year-old after he left the squad’s base in Copenhagen on September 30, just before Portugal’s Nations League meeting with Denmark.
The case has now been classified as urgent and transferred to the federation’s Disciplinary Investigation Committee. Ronaldo is facing a preventive suspension while the investigation continues, meaning the latest decision is not yet the final disciplinary punishment.
The development comes days after Ronaldo broke his silence over the incident and gave a detailed explanation of what led to his departure from the national team.
Ronaldo explains what happened
Ronaldo said the disagreement stemmed from a series of conversations with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus over his role during the international break.
According to Ronaldo, the initial plan was for him to manage his playing time because of his physical condition and the demands of his club schedule.
He said Jesus had proposed that he would miss Portugal’s matches against Norway and Denmark, remain in Portugal and then return to the squad ahead of the following fixture at the Estádio do Dragão.
Ronaldo rejected that arrangement because he believed his absence from the travelling squad would send the wrong message, particularly because he remained Portugal’s captain.
The forward said he subsequently played against Norway but was substituted during the match.
The situation became more complicated on match day when, according to Ronaldo, the coach’s assistant told him that Jesus wanted to speak with him.
Ronaldo said Jesus asked whether he would be willing to play around 30 minutes against Norway. Despite the request being outside the original fitness plan, Ronaldo agreed.
He then warmed up from halftime but was ultimately not introduced.
Ronaldo said that moment represented a serious breakdown in trust.
“The Head Coach had failed to keep his word,” Ronaldo said in his statement.
The situation did not immediately result in his departure. Ronaldo said he later had a lengthy conversation with Jesus and Sporting Director Simão Coutinho, during which they discussed how the disagreement could be resolved.
Ronaldo says he expected Jesus to explain the situation publicly
Ronaldo claims the meeting ended with an understanding that Jesus would explain the situation during his next press conference.
The Portugal captain said the coach had agreed to clarify that Ronaldo had never demanded to play, that the original plan had been proposed by Jesus himself and that asking Ronaldo to warm up without eventually bringing him onto the pitch had been a mistake.
Ronaldo also said the agreement was that he would not play against Denmark but would return for Portugal’s next match at the Dragão.
However, he was unhappy with what followed.
According to Ronaldo, the tone of Jesus’ press conference was very different from the private conversation they had previously shared.
He said he felt the coach’s public comments were aggressive and did not reflect the understanding reached between them.
For Ronaldo, that was the second time he believed the coach had failed to keep his word.
He therefore decided to leave the national team camp rather than wait for another disagreement.
Ronaldo accepts responsibility for leaving
Despite his criticism of the coach, Ronaldo has repeatedly accepted responsibility for his own actions.
He apologised for leaving his teammates and admitted that he should not have walked away from the squad, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the disagreement.
He also apologised for his reaction following Portugal’s victory over Norway.
Ronaldo said he was frustrated after the match and wanted to be alone, which led to him failing to acknowledge the supporters inside the stadium.
He described that as his own mistake and apologised to Portuguese supporters, as well as fans from other countries who had travelled to see him.
The forward also apologised directly to his teammates for leaving the camp.
“Despite the absolute breach of trust,” Ronaldo said, “I should not have done it. The responsibility is entirely mine.”
His willingness to accept responsibility has also extended to whatever disciplinary punishment eventually comes from the FPF.
Ronaldo says he deserves to be punished
Rather than asking for special treatment because of his status, Ronaldo said he believes the federation should judge his actions according to the rules.
The Portugal captain acknowledged that his position could actually make the situation more serious because of the responsibility that comes with wearing the armband.
He said he does not believe there should be mitigating factors because of his reputation or achievements with the national team.
“The consequence of my act must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation,” Ronaldo said, adding that he believes the punishment should have no mitigating factors.
He also pointed out that footballers are expected to follow the same rules regardless of their status.
That position could prove significant as the FPF continues its disciplinary process.
Under the federation’s disciplinary regulations, a player who leaves national-team duties without sufficient justification can face a suspension and financial penalty. The final punishment, however, will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
Ronaldo insists he never interfered with team decisions
Another important part of Ronaldo’s statement was his insistence that he has never attempted to dictate tactical or technical decisions to Portugal’s coaches.
The veteran forward said that throughout his international career he has accepted decisions made by coaches, whether he agreed with them or not.
He argued that his dispute with Jesus was not about demanding a starting position or refusing to accept a substitution.
Instead, Ronaldo presented the issue as one of trust and communication.
He said he had no problem accepting a coach’s decision but struggled with what he considered broken promises.
Ronaldo also revealed that, before the press conference, he told both the FPF president and Jesus that if they no longer wanted him with the national team, they only needed to tell him directly.
According to Ronaldo, both men told him that his place remained with Portugal.
That made his eventual decision to leave even more difficult, but Ronaldo said he believed remaining with the group would eventually become more damaging to the team.
Ronaldo still wants to play for Portugal
Despite the controversy, Ronaldo has made it clear that he has no intention of walking away from international football at this stage.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said there has been considerable discussion about giving him a farewell match, but he does not currently view his relationship with Portugal through the lens of retirement.
For Ronaldo, representing Portugal is still about competing.
He recalled a particularly emotional moment from his international career when he received news of his father’s death while with the national team.
Ronaldo said he remained with the squad until after Portugal’s following match, explaining that he stayed because of what playing for his country meant to him.
He now wants to continue representing Portugal if he remains physically capable of doing so.
The forward said that once he serves whatever suspension is ultimately imposed, he will remain available for selection as long as he is fit and performing for Al Nassr.
What happens next?
The FPF’s latest decision does not represent the conclusion of the case.
The federation has opened a formal disciplinary investigation and placed Ronaldo under a non-automatic preventive suspension while the process continues.
The case has been sent to the relevant disciplinary investigation body, with proceedings being kept private until the investigation is completed.
That means Ronaldo’s eventual punishment has not yet been confirmed.
For now, the Portugal captain must wait for the disciplinary process to determine the consequences of his decision to leave the squad.
The controversy has nevertheless placed an unusual cloud over the closing stages of Ronaldo’s international career.
He remains one of Portugal’s most important players and has repeatedly stated that he still wants to compete for his country.
At the same time, his decision to leave the camp has created a disciplinary issue that the federation must now resolve regardless of his status or achievements.
Ronaldo appears to understand that reality.
In his statement, he accepted that his actions must have consequences while making it clear that the dispute has not changed his desire to wear the Portugal shirt.
For now, the next chapter will be decided by the Portuguese Football Federation.
