Yalçın is back!

Sergen Yalçın has been appointed as the new head coach of the Turkish national team, with the experienced Turkish manager taking over from Vincenzo Montella on a four-year contract.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) confirmed Yalçın’s appointment on Tuesday, October 20, bringing an end to the search for a new manager following Montella’s dismissal earlier this month.

The decision comes at an important moment for Türkiye, who are looking to recover from a difficult run of results and restore confidence around the national team.

Yalçın now returns to the international stage in a completely different role after representing Türkiye as a player during his own career. The 53-year-old was capped 37 times by his country between 1994 and 2003 and was part of the squads at UEFA Euro 1996 and Euro 2000.

His appointment also represents a significant moment in his managerial career, as he gets the opportunity to lead his country for the first time.

Yalçın Replaces Montella

Yalçın takes charge after the Turkish federation decided to part ways with Montella following a disappointing period for the national team.

The Italian coach had been in charge of Türkiye since 2023, but his time in the dugout eventually came to an end after a difficult sequence of results.

Türkiye currently sit bottom of their UEFA Nations League Group A1 section after losing their opening four matches. Their poor run also followed a disappointing group-stage exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The results created pressure on the federation to make a change, with Montella eventually dismissed and the search for his replacement beginning immediately.

Yalçın emerged as the preferred candidate, with his extensive experience in Turkish football making him an attractive option for the federation.

The TFF expressed its hope that the appointment would lead to success for both Yalçın and the national team.

A Familiar Face in Turkish Football

Yalçın is one of the most recognisable figures in Turkish football.

As a player, he was an attacking midfielder known for his technical ability, creativity and vision. He spent much of his career at Beşiktaş and also represented several of Türkiye’s biggest clubs, including Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Trabzonspor.

His career at club level gave him an understanding of the expectations that come with playing for major Turkish sides, while his international experience means he also knows what it is like to represent the national team.

That background could prove valuable as he attempts to rebuild a squad that has struggled for consistency.

Yalçın’s transition from player to coach has also produced one of the most notable achievements of his career.

In the 2020–21 season, he guided Beşiktaş to the Süper Lig title and Turkish Cup, completing a domestic double. That success established him as one of the leading Turkish coaches of his generation.

Return to the International Stage

The national team job gives Yalçın an opportunity to build on his previous coaching experience while working with some of the country's most talented players.

His managerial career has included spells at Gaziantepspor, Sivasspor, Kayserispor, Eskişehirspor, Konyaspor, Alanyaspor, Yeni Malatyaspor and Antalyaspor, in addition to his time at Beşiktaş.

He most recently managed Beşiktaş during the 2025–26 season after returning to the club in August 2025.

His second spell ended in May 2026, but his previous success with the club remained an important part of his reputation.

Now, instead of managing a club side, Yalçın will have the responsibility of preparing Türkiye for international competition and developing a team capable of competing against Europe's strongest nations.

Immediate Challenge Awaits

Yalçın will not have much time to settle into the position before returning to competitive action.

Türkiye are scheduled to face Belgium on November 12 before taking on France three days later in the UEFA Nations League.

Those fixtures will provide Yalçın with his first major test and an early opportunity to demonstrate what he wants his national team to look like.

The new manager will also have to assess his options quickly because international football provides limited opportunities for training compared with club football.

That makes squad selection, tactical organisation and communication particularly important.

Yalçın will need to establish his preferred approach while also making the most of the quality available to him.

Pressure to Deliver

Despite his reputation and previous success, Yalçın will arrive with considerable pressure.

Türkiye have endured a difficult period, and the federation will expect the new manager to produce an immediate improvement.

The national team has talented players capable of competing at the highest level, but turning that individual quality into consistent performances will be one of Yalçın’s biggest challenges.

His familiarity with Turkish football could work in his favour. Unlike a foreign coach arriving without extensive knowledge of the domestic game, Yalçın understands the country's football culture and has worked with many of the players and clubs that supply talent to the national team.

There will also be significant attention on how he handles the younger generation of Turkish players.

A New Chapter for Yalçın

For Yalçın, the appointment represents the biggest managerial opportunity of his career.

He has already enjoyed success at club level, particularly during his title-winning campaign with Beşiktaş, but leading the national team carries a different level of responsibility.

He now has the chance to shape Türkiye's footballing direction over the next four years.

The federation's decision to hand him a four-year contract indicates that the appointment is not simply about short-term results. Yalçın will be expected to build a competitive side while establishing a clear identity for the national team.

His first task, however, will be to stop the current slide and restore belief within the squad.

With Belgium and France waiting in November, the new coach will quickly discover the scale of the challenge.

For Türkiye, the hope is that Yalçın's experience, knowledge of the domestic game and previous success can help turn a difficult period into the beginning of a new era.

For Yalçın himself, the opportunity to lead his country marks a significant new chapter in a career that has already seen him succeed both as a player and as a coach.
