Real Madrid produced a huge statement in the LaLiga title race on Sunday night, defeating Barcelona 2-1 at Spotify Camp Nou in a dramatic El Clásico decided by two goals from Kylian Mbappé.

The victory was Madrid’s first at Barcelona’s home ground since October 2023 and moved José Mourinho’s side to within three points of the league leaders. Barcelona had entered the match with a perfect record after nine victories from their opening nine league games, but Real Madrid ended that remarkable run with a disciplined and clinical performance.

Mbappé was the decisive figure throughout the contest, scoring once in each half to give Madrid the points. His first goal arrived shortly before the interval, while his second came late in the match when Barcelona appeared to be pushing hardest for a winner.

Madrid Strike Before Half-Time

The opening stages were played at a high tempo, with both sides showing a willingness to attack. Barcelona enjoyed more of the possession, attempting to use their passing game to move Madrid around, while the visitors looked particularly dangerous whenever they found space for their forwards.

Anthony Gordon tested Andriy Lunin early, but the Real Madrid goalkeeper was ready to respond. Lunin was making his first appearance of the season after Thibaut Courtois was ruled out through illness, and his performance would become increasingly important as the night progressed.

Madrid gradually began to find opportunities of their own, with Mbappé constantly threatening Barcelona’s defensive line through his pace and movement.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 41st minute. Yan Diomande delivered the ball into the area, and Barcelona defender Gerard Martín attempted to clear the danger. The ball struck Mbappé and deflected into the net, leaving the French forward with the opening goal of the night.

It was not the cleanest finish, but Madrid had their reward for remaining dangerous in the final third. Barcelona had opportunities to respond before the interval, including a chance for Lamine Yamal, but the hosts went into half-time trailing 1-0.

Barcelona Fight Back

Barcelona returned from the break with greater urgency and immediately began putting Madrid under pressure.

The hosts increased their attacking intensity and looked more comfortable in possession. Real Madrid were forced to defend deeper for periods, while Barcelona searched for an opening that would bring them level.

Their persistence paid off in the 61st minute.

Pedri created the opportunity with an intelligent pass into the penalty area, finding Raphinha in a dangerous position. The Brazilian kept his composure and fired beyond Lunin to make it 1-1.

The equaliser changed the atmosphere inside Camp Nou. Barcelona sensed an opportunity to complete the comeback, while Madrid suddenly faced a sustained spell of pressure.

The hosts continued to create openings, but Lunin stood between them and a second goal. One of his most important interventions came when he produced a superb save to deny Gerard Martín’s header, preserving the 1-1 scoreline.

Barcelona also continued to threaten through Lamine Yamal and their midfield runners, while Madrid searched for opportunities on the counterattack.

Despite having less possession, Madrid remained dangerous because of the pace available in their forward line. Every time Barcelona committed numbers forward, there was a possibility that the visitors could exploit the space behind them.

Mbappé Delivers the Decisive Blow

With the match heading towards its final stages, Barcelona appeared to have the momentum.

However, Real Madrid refused to settle for a draw.

A quick attacking move eventually produced the decisive moment in the 87th minute. Eduardo Camavinga played a major role in the move, breaking forward and getting beyond Pau Cubarsí before sending the ball across the area.

Mbappé had anticipated the opportunity and arrived in the perfect position.

The Frenchman calmly finished into an unguarded net to put Real Madrid back in front at 2-1.

It was Mbappé’s second goal of the night and his 11th LaLiga goal of the season. More importantly, it gave Madrid the advantage with only minutes remaining.

Barcelona pushed forward in search of another equaliser, but Madrid managed the closing stages effectively. The visitors remained compact and protected their lead until the final whistle.

The result ended Barcelona’s 23-match winning run in home league games and handed Madrid one of their most significant victories of the campaign.

Kylian Mbappé Named Man of the Match

There was little doubt about the standout performer.

Kylian Mbappé was named Man of the Match after scoring both of Real Madrid’s goals.

The French forward finished the evening with a brace and repeatedly caused problems for Barcelona’s defence with his acceleration, positioning and movement behind the back line.

His opening goal may have involved a fortunate deflection, but Mbappé’s second demonstrated his awareness and composure in a decisive moment. He stayed alert during Madrid’s counterattack, found the space created by Camavinga and made no mistake when presented with the opportunity.

According to Sofascore, Mbappé received an 8.2 rating, the highest of any player in the match. He also registered two key passes, won five of nine duels and drew four fouls. His performance earned him the highest rating from the statistical model as well as the most fan votes for Player of the Match.

Other Madrid players also made important contributions. Lunin was outstanding when Barcelona increased the pressure, while Camavinga made a major impact after coming off the bench by creating the winning goal.

But Mbappé’s finishing ultimately separated the two teams.

A Major Result for Real Madrid

The victory could prove extremely important in the title race.

Barcelona remain top of LaLiga with 27 points from 10 matches, while Atlético Madrid sit second and Real Madrid are now third on 24 points. Madrid therefore leave Camp Nou only three points behind their biggest rivals, turning what could have been a significant gap into a much more manageable one.

For Mourinho, the result also extended his unbeaten record against Barcelona as Real Madrid manager, while the victory gave his players considerable confidence heading into the next stage of the campaign.

Barcelona will feel frustrated after dominating possession and producing 17 shots compared with Madrid’s nine. However, football is ultimately decided by goals, and Real Madrid were more clinical when the biggest opportunities arrived.

Madrid did not need to control the ball for long periods. Instead, they defended when necessary, absorbed Barcelona’s pressure and attacked with purpose when spaces appeared.

That approach proved decisive.

The final whistle confirmed a memorable 2-1 victory for Real Madrid, with Mbappé’s double ensuring that the spotlight belonged to the French superstar.

For Barcelona, it was a painful first league defeat of the season. For Real Madrid, it was the kind of victory that can change the direction of a title race.

And with Mbappé already showing the ability to decide the biggest matches, Madrid will believe they have every reason to remain confident in their pursuit of the LaLiga crown.
