Chicago Fire Fight Back From Two Goals Down to Draw 2-2 With Orlando City
Chicago Fire produced a strong second-half comeback at Soldier Field to rescue a 2-2 draw against Orlando City, with Jonathan Bamba and Maren Haile-Selassie cancelling out goals from Iván Angulo and Antoine Griezmann.

Chicago Fire staged an impressive second-half comeback to earn a 2-2 draw against Orlando City in an entertaining MLS encounter at Soldier Field.
The Fire looked to be heading toward a disappointing home defeat after Orlando City established a two-goal advantage before halftime. However, Chicago responded with a much stronger display after the break, scoring twice through Jonathan Bamba and Maren Haile-Selassie to secure a share of the points.
The result means Chicago remain fourth in the Eastern Conference with 52 points from 32 matches, while Orlando City moved to 43 points and remained in an automatic playoff qualification position.
The match also produced an outstanding individual performance from Antoine Griezmann, who scored Orlando’s second goal and assisted Iván Angulo for the opener. His contribution earned him the Man of the Match award.
Orlando City Make Fast Start
Orlando City wasted little time putting pressure on the hosts.
The visitors opened the scoring after just six minutes when Luís Otávio helped launch an attack that eventually found Griezmann. The French forward spotted Iván Angulo in space on the left and played him through.
Angulo carried the ball into the penalty area before firing from a tight angle and beating Chicago goalkeeper Chris Brady at the near post.
The early goal immediately placed Chicago on the back foot and gave Orlando confidence to control the opening stages.
Griezmann was at the centre of Orlando’s attacking play, constantly looking for opportunities to create problems between Chicago’s midfield and defensive lines.
Chicago gradually began to see more of the ball, but Orlando’s defensive structure made it difficult for the hosts to turn their possession into clear chances.
The Fire eventually finished the match with 58 percent possession and 23 total shots, compared with nine attempts from Orlando. Despite those numbers, Chicago struggled to make their dominance count during the first half.
Griezmann Doubles Orlando’s Lead
Orlando’s advantage became even more comfortable in the 35th minute.
Luís Otávio was involved again as Orlando worked the ball forward before Vinícius Nogueira found Griezmann outside the penalty area.
The Frenchman created enough space for himself before curling a precise effort beyond Brady to make it 2-0.
It was another example of the quality Griezmann has brought to Orlando since arriving at the club. The goal was his 15th across all competitions for the Lions since joining during the summer.
More importantly, his assist for Angulo’s opener extended his remarkable run of producing a goal contribution in consecutive MLS matches. Orlando City confirmed that the sequence reached 12 straight league games, matching a club record previously set by Martín Ojeda in 2025.
Chicago went into halftime two goals behind, leaving head coach Gregg Berhalter with plenty to address.
The Fire had enjoyed significant possession and had created attacking pressure, but Orlando had been more efficient in front of goal.
Bamba Changes the Game
Chicago made a crucial adjustment at halftime by introducing Jonathan Bamba for Sergio Oregel Jr.
The change immediately gave the Fire another attacking outlet, and Bamba became one of the most important players on the pitch during the second half.
Chicago came out with greater urgency and began pushing Orlando deeper into its own defensive third.
The pressure finally paid off in the 57th minute.
After Chicago worked the ball toward the Orlando penalty area, Leonardo Barroso delivered a cross toward the far post. The ball eventually reached Bamba, who rose to head it into the net and reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The goal completely changed the atmosphere inside Soldier Field.
Instead of protecting a comfortable lead, Orlando suddenly found itself under sustained pressure from a Chicago side determined to complete the comeback.
Bamba’s introduction proved decisive, and his movement created problems for Orlando’s defenders who were increasingly forced to defend closer to their own goal.
Haile-Selassie Completes Comeback
Chicago continued searching for the equalizer, and their persistence was rewarded in the 69th minute.
The Fire recovered possession deep inside Orlando’s half before the ball eventually fell to Bamba.
The winger showed excellent composure, controlling the situation before laying the ball off for Maren Haile-Selassie.
Haile-Selassie needed no second invitation.
He finished from close range to bring the score level at 2-2.
The goal capped a remarkable turnaround for Chicago, who had entered halftime two goals behind.
For Haile-Selassie, it was another important contribution to an impressive season. His goal took his tally to 12 for the campaign, doubling his previous career-best total of six goals from 2023.
Bamba deserved significant credit for the equalizer, having already scored Chicago’s first goal before turning provider for Haile-Selassie’s finish.
Chicago Push for a Winner
With the scores level, both sides had opportunities to claim all three points.
Chicago continued to apply pressure and finished the contest with eight corners, while Orlando had three.
The hosts also recorded six shots on target according to the official match statistics, compared with six for Orlando. Chicago’s 21 total shots in the official match report demonstrated how much attacking pressure the Fire generated after falling behind.
Orlando, however, remained dangerous on the counterattack.
The visitors knew that another opening could potentially restore their advantage, particularly with Griezmann still capable of creating something from limited space.
Late substitutions were made by both teams as the managers attempted to influence the closing stages.
Chicago pushed forward in search of a winner, while Orlando focused on staying organized and protecting the point.
Neither side could find the decisive third goal, however, and the referee brought the contest to an end with the score locked at 2-2.
Man of the Match: Antoine Griezmann
Despite Orlando City surrendering a two-goal lead, Antoine Griezmann was the standout performer of the night.
The French forward finished the game with one goal and one assist, directly contributing to both of Orlando’s goals.
His assist for Angulo’s opener demonstrated his awareness and creativity, while his own goal showcased his ability to create space and finish from outside the box.
Griezmann was also central to Orlando’s attacking threat throughout the match, forcing Chicago’s defenders to remain alert whenever he received possession around the final third.
His performance was reflected in the player ratings, with multiple match-data sources naming him Player of the Match and giving him a rating above 8.0.
The performance continued an extraordinary start to his Orlando City career.
Since joining the Lions, Griezmann has quickly established himself as one of the team’s most influential attacking players. Orlando confirmed that he has recorded 23 goal contributions in 20 appearances across all competitions, with 15 goals and eight assists during that period.
He also became the first player in MLS history to record a goal contribution in 14 of his first 16 league matches, underlining just how productive his opening months in the competition have been.
A Valuable Point for Both Teams
The final result will probably leave both teams with mixed feelings.
Chicago will be pleased with the character shown after going into halftime two goals behind. Their second-half performance demonstrated why they have remained among the Eastern Conference’s leading teams.
At the same time, the Fire may feel they had enough chances to win the match after dominating possession and producing 21 shots.
Orlando will be disappointed not to have held onto the victory after building a commanding first-half advantage. Nevertheless, taking a point away from Soldier Field keeps the Lions in a strong position as the regular season approaches its conclusion.
The draw also extended Chicago’s unbeaten run against Orlando to five matches, with the Fire recording three wins and two draws during that sequence.
For Chicago, the focus now turns to their final two regular-season matches as they look to strengthen their position ahead of the playoffs.
Orlando, meanwhile, will look to recover quickly and protect its playoff position in the remaining fixtures.
Ultimately, the 2-2 draw told the story of two very different halves. Orlando controlled the first period and appeared firmly in command, while Chicago responded after the interval with the intensity and determination needed to rescue the game.
Bamba’s goal and assist sparked the comeback, Haile-Selassie’s finish completed it, but Griezmann’s goal and assist made him the night’s most influential individual performer.
