Inter Miami 2-2 FC Cincinnati: Suárez Scores as Miami Rescue Point in Dramatic MLS Thriller
Inter Miami were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against FC Cincinnati after a dramatic second half produced four goals, with Luis Suárez and Riquelme Fillipi finding the net for the hosts.

Inter Miami were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by FC Cincinnati on Wednesday night after a frantic second half at Nu Stadium produced four goals and several momentum swings.
The hosts appeared to be on course for an important victory when Luis Suárez opened the scoring in the 61st minute, but Cincinnati responded with two goals in six minutes to turn the match around. Kenji Mboma Dem equalised in the 80th minute before Samuel Gidi put the visitors ahead four minutes later.
Inter Miami refused to surrender, however, and substitute Riquelme Fillipi came off the bench to score a 90th-minute equaliser, rescuing a point for the home side.
The result leaves Miami with 56 points from 32 matches, while Cincinnati moved to 43 points as the regular season enters its decisive closing stages. Cincinnati also remained firmly involved in the Eastern Conference playoff race with two matches remaining.
Cagey First Half Produces No Goals
The opening 45 minutes were much quieter than what followed.
Inter Miami controlled the majority of possession and attempted to dictate the tempo, but Cincinnati remained organised and made it difficult for the home side to find space around the penalty area.
Miami eventually finished the match with 58.6 percent possession compared with Cincinnati’s 41.4 percent, while the hosts registered 14 shots to the visitors’ 13. Despite that territorial advantage, neither team could break the deadlock before the interval.
Cincinnati showed enough attacking intent to suggest that they were not simply interested in defending. The visitors tested Miami’s defensive structure and looked dangerous whenever they were able to transition quickly from defence into attack.
Lionel Messi, meanwhile, struggled to find the kind of openings that have so often allowed him to decide matches. The Inter Miami captain was booked in the 44th minute, with the score still locked at 0-0 heading into halftime.
Miami made two changes at the break, introducing Ian Fray and Telasco Segovia as the hosts looked to increase their attacking threat.
Suárez Breaks the Deadlock
The match finally burst into life shortly after the hour mark.
In the 61st minute, Casemiro helped create the opening for Luis Suárez, who produced the type of finish that has defined his career.
The Uruguayan received the ball inside the penalty area before taking a touch and curling a right-footed effort into the top corner. The finish gave Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano little chance and sent Miami into a 1-0 lead.
It was Suárez’s 16th regular-season goal of the campaign, while Casemiro registered his first assist since joining Inter Miami during the summer.
For a period, Miami appeared to have control of the contest. The hosts continued to see more of the ball and looked capable of protecting their advantage.
But Cincinnati had other ideas.
Cincinnati Produce Stunning Comeback
The visitors gradually increased the pressure as the match entered its final 15 minutes.
Their persistence was rewarded in the 80th minute when Kenji Mboma Dem produced a brilliant individual effort to bring Cincinnati level.
Evander played the ball towards Mboma Dem, who worked his way into the box from the right side. After using a series of quick movements to create room, the forward found the top corner with a superb finish.
The goal completely changed the atmosphere inside the stadium.
Cincinnati suddenly believed they could take all three points, while Miami found themselves under pressure despite having led for much of the second half.
Only six minutes later, Cincinnati completed the turnaround.
A quick attacking move created an opening for Samuel Gidi, who arrived at the top of the box before sending a precise first-time finish into the bottom corner.
The goal was particularly significant for Gidi because it was his first career goal for FC Cincinnati. It also appeared to have put the visitors on course for a memorable away victory.
Cincinnati had gone from trailing 1-0 to leading 2-1 in the space of six minutes.
Fillipi Saves Miami at the Death
Inter Miami needed a response, and it arrived almost immediately after Riquelme Fillipi was introduced in the 83rd minute.
The Brazilian winger had only been on the pitch for a few minutes when he became the unlikely hero for the home side.
In the 90th minute, Rodrigo De Paul supplied Fillipi with the ball, and the substitute produced a composed finish from the left side of the box to restore parity.
Fillipi’s effort found the bottom-right corner, leaving Cincinnati with no time to mount another comeback. It was his first goal for Inter Miami and completed a remarkable turnaround of its own.
The goal ensured that Miami avoided what would have been a painful home defeat after initially taking the lead.
The final moments remained tense, with Cincinnati still searching for another opportunity. Evander came close to winning the match in stoppage time when he found himself with a chance around the penalty spot, but Ian Fray threw his body in front of the attempt to prevent what could have been a decisive third goal.
The ensuing Cincinnati corner failed to produce anything dangerous, and the referee brought the contest to an end at 2-2.
Luis Suárez Named Man of the Match
Although Riquelme Fillipi’s late equaliser earned plenty of attention, Luis Suárez was the Man of the Match based on the available player ratings.
Suárez received an 8.2 rating, putting him level with Cincinnati’s Kenji Mboma Dem for the highest individual score in the match. However, Suárez was selected as the overall Player of the Match.
His contribution went beyond simply scoring the opening goal.
The veteran striker remained a constant threat in the attacking third and provided Miami with an important outlet against a Cincinnati side that defended with discipline for long periods.
His 61st-minute goal was also one of the game’s standout moments. After receiving the ball inside the box, Suárez showed his trademark composure before bending the finish beyond the goalkeeper.
Fillipi’s impact was also significant. The substitute scored with virtually his first major opportunity and earned an 8.0 rating, making him one of Miami’s strongest performers on the night. Rodrigo De Paul also impressed, providing the assist for Fillipi’s equaliser and finishing with a 7.7 rating.
For Cincinnati, Mboma Dem was arguably the visitors’ most dangerous attacking player. His spectacular equaliser gave his team belief and earned him an 8.2 rating. Evander also played an important role, registering an assist and helping Cincinnati threaten Miami during the second half.
What the Result Means
The draw represents a missed opportunity for Inter Miami in their pursuit of a higher position in the Eastern Conference.
Miami entered the match needing points during the final stretch of the regular season, but the two dropped points allowed New England to move ahead after defeating the New York Red Bulls.
New England’s victory took the Revolution to 58 points, two clear of Miami, with both teams having two matches remaining. The two sides are also scheduled to meet in Foxborough on Sunday, making the upcoming fixture particularly important in the race for the top positions.
For Cincinnati, the point could prove valuable in the playoff race.
The club moved to 43 points and remained eighth in the Eastern Conference, level on points with Orlando City but behind on the relevant tiebreaker. Cincinnati also remained ahead of the teams immediately below the playoff line, although its remaining fixtures will be crucial.
The result also gave Cincinnati another reason to celebrate after the club set a new single-season scoring record in MLS. Mboma Dem’s goal took Cincinnati to 65 league goals for the campaign, while Gidi’s strike moved the total to 66, surpassing the previous club record of 64 set in 2022.
Ultimately, the 2-2 draw reflected a match that changed dramatically after halftime.
Miami had possession, created chances and appeared to have the game under control after Suárez’s opener. Cincinnati, however, responded with two excellent finishes and briefly looked ready to leave Florida with all three points.
Fillipi’s late intervention changed the ending once again.
For Inter Miami, the point keeps their ambitions alive but also underlines the importance of becoming more clinical and defensively secure during the final matches of the campaign. For Cincinnati, the comeback demonstrated their ability to compete against one of the Eastern Conference’s strongest sides.
The night belonged to Suárez as the official Man of the Match, but Fillipi’s last-minute intervention ensured that the final story was one of survival rather than defeat for Inter Miami.
