Liverpool 2-0 Brighton: Reds Beat In-Form Seagulls at Anfield as Araújo Shines
Liverpool secured a convincing 2-0 Premier League victory over Brighton at Anfield, with Pascal Gross’ own goal and Alexander Isak’s first-half strike giving the Reds all three points. Ronald Araújo was named Man of the Match after an outstanding defensive display.

Liverpool produced a disciplined performance at Anfield on Sunday as they defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 in the Premier League, securing an important victory against one of the division’s most impressive sides.
The Reds did their damage in the first half, scoring twice within four minutes to take control of the contest. Pascal Gross turned the ball into his own net in the 17th minute before Alexander Isak doubled Liverpool’s advantage shortly afterwards.
Brighton enjoyed plenty of possession, particularly after the interval, but Liverpool’s defensive organisation prevented the visitors from turning that control into meaningful goalscoring opportunities. The Seagulls finished the match with 64 per cent possession and 17 attempts, compared with Liverpool’s 36 per cent possession and 13 shots, according to the match statistics shown in the supplied image.
Despite Brighton having more of the ball, Liverpool were ultimately more clinical in the decisive moments.
Liverpool Strike Twice in Four Minutes
Brighton began the afternoon with confidence and created a major opportunity before Liverpool found the breakthrough.
Yasin Ayari was presented with a golden chance after Pascal Gross cut the ball back into a dangerous area, but the Brighton attacker fired over the crossbar. It proved to be an important miss as Liverpool punished the visitors only moments later.
The opening goal arrived in the 17th minute.
Florian Wirtz collected the loose ball following a partially cleared attack and sent a low effort towards goal. Gross attempted to deal with the danger, but the ball deflected off him and ended up in the Brighton net.
Liverpool had taken the lead without needing a conventional goalscorer, but their second goal arrived just four minutes later.
Bradley Barcola created the opportunity after pressing Brighton’s defence and winning possession. The winger then delivered the ball into the area, where Isak was perfectly positioned to finish from close range.
The Swedish striker made no mistake, giving Liverpool a 2-0 advantage in the 21st minute.
The goal continued Isak’s impressive scoring run. He has now scored in three consecutive Premier League matches and has six league goals this season.
Brighton Control Possession But Struggle to Finish
The two-goal deficit forced Brighton to become more adventurous, and Fabian Hurzeler’s side gradually began to dictate possession.
The statistics highlighted the contrast between the teams. Brighton finished with 64 per cent of the ball and recorded 17 total shots, while Liverpool managed 13 attempts.
However, possession did not translate into enough clear opportunities.
Brighton registered only one shot on target, underlining Liverpool’s ability to protect their lead once they had established a comfortable advantage. Ayari came close again when his curling effort struck the post, giving Liverpool another warning.
The Reds also had opportunities to put the game beyond doubt.
Liverpool found space on the counter as Brighton pushed men forward, but the home side could not consistently produce the final pass or finish their chances. Bart Verbruggen was also called into action, including when he denied a powerful effort from Araújo.
Liverpool therefore had to remain focused during the closing stages rather than simply relying on their attacking players to produce a third goal.
Araújo Leads Liverpool’s Defensive Effort
While Isak deserved plenty of attention for scoring the second goal, Ronald Araújo stood out for his contribution across the pitch.
The defender produced a commanding performance at the back, combining physical strength, intelligent positioning and aggressive challenges to keep Brighton’s attack under control.
Araújo was particularly important when Brighton attempted to increase the pressure after half-time. His willingness to step forward and make decisive interventions helped Liverpool prevent the visitors from finding a way back into the contest.
One of his defensive challenges late in the match drew a strong reaction from the Anfield crowd, reflecting how influential he had become to Liverpool’s efforts.
His display was subsequently recognised by supporters. Liverpool confirmed that Araújo was voted the club’s Carlsberg Player of the Match, collecting 85 per cent of the votes.
Man of the Match: Ronald Araújo
Ronald Araújo
Araújo was Liverpool’s standout performer in the 2-0 victory.
Although Isak provided the finishing touch and Barcola played a major role in the second goal, Araújo’s contribution was crucial to Liverpool maintaining their clean sheet.
He defended with authority, competed strongly in challenges and repeatedly helped Liverpool deal with Brighton’s attacking pressure.
His performance was particularly impressive because Brighton spent long periods controlling possession. Rather than allowing that dominance to create panic, Araújo and the rest of Liverpool’s defence remained organised.
Liverpool’s official Player of the Match vote confirmed the supporters’ view, with Araújo comfortably taking the award with 85 per cent of the votes.
Liverpool Move Into the Top Four
The victory represents an important result for Liverpool and manager Andoni Iraola.
The three points moved Liverpool into fourth place in the Premier League standings, while Brighton remained ahead of them despite suffering only their second league defeat of the season.
More importantly, Liverpool recorded their first Premier League home victory of the campaign at Anfield.
The result also extended their winning run across all competitions to four matches.
For Brighton, the defeat will be frustrating because they enjoyed considerable possession and arrived at Anfield in excellent form. Their inability to turn that control into goals, however, ultimately proved decisive.
Liverpool showed that they did not need to dominate the ball to control the outcome. Two clinical moments in the opening 21 minutes gave them the platform they needed, while a disciplined defensive performance ensured Brighton could not recover.
With the final whistle confirming a 2-0 victory, Liverpool left Anfield with three valuable points, a clean sheet and growing confidence.
Isak’s goalscoring form will provide further encouragement, but Araújo’s defensive excellence was equally important. Against a Brighton side capable of causing problems for any Premier League opponent, Liverpool demonstrated the balance required to win difficult matches.
The result also strengthened Liverpool’s position in the race for the top places, giving the squad another boost after a demanding afternoon. With Brighton unable to find a breakthrough despite their territorial advantage, the Reds showed enough maturity to see out the contest and secure the points.
For Iraola and his players, it was a statement victory and another sign that Liverpool are beginning to find their rhythm.
