Crystal Palace 0-2 Newcastle United: Magpies Secure Important Win at Selhurst Park
Newcastle United produced a strong second-half performance to defeat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Selhurst Park, with William Osula and Harvey Barnes finding the net. Goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček also played a major role in securing the clean sheet.

Newcastle United returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
The Magpies endured a frustrating opening 45 minutes but responded impressively after the break, scoring twice within 11 minutes to take control of the contest. William Osula opened the scoring shortly after half-time before Harvey Barnes doubled the advantage in the 58th minute.
The result gives Newcastle a valuable three points after a difficult run of league results and lifts Matthias Jaissle’s side to seventh place in the Premier League table.
Palace Start With More Purpose
Crystal Palace entered the match looking to make the most of home advantage, and the Eagles were the more threatening team during portions of the first half.
Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček was required to remain alert early on, particularly when Jean-Philippe Mateta found an opportunity inside the penalty area. The Czech goalkeeper reacted quickly to prevent Palace from taking the lead.
Mateta also tested Newcastle from distance, while Daichi Kamada was involved in another Palace attack that resulted in appeals for a penalty. Referee Paul Tierney was not convinced there was enough contact to award a spot-kick.
Newcastle struggled to create clear openings of their own during the opening period. Harvey Barnes had attempts blocked as Palace remained organised defensively, while the visitors were unable to turn their possession into a breakthrough.
The statistics reflected a relatively balanced contest. Palace finished with 52 percent possession compared with Newcastle’s 48 percent, while the hosts recorded 17 total shots to Newcastle’s 10. However, Newcastle proved far more efficient when their opportunities arrived.
Neither team could break the deadlock before the interval, and the sides went into half-time level at 0-0.
Osula Breaks the Deadlock
Newcastle emerged from the dressing room with considerably greater attacking intent.
Just two minutes after the restart, the visitors finally found the breakthrough.
Jacob Murphy produced an excellent curling cross from the right, sending the ball into a dangerous area near the Palace goal. William Osula attacked the delivery and managed to get ahead of his marker before turning the ball home.
The goal was particularly significant for Osula, who was making his first start since Newcastle’s opening game of the season. His return to the starting lineup was rewarded with an important goal at a crucial moment.
Newcastle immediately looked more confident after taking the lead.
The visitors appeared to have scored a second shortly afterwards when Joe Willock finished a promising attack, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review because the midfielder was marginally offside.
Palace were given a warning by the disallowed goal, but Newcastle continued to threaten.
Barnes Doubles Newcastle’s Advantage
The second goal arrived in the 58th minute.
Newcastle worked the ball effectively around the Palace penalty area before Nico González helped create the opening for Amar Dedić. The defender advanced on the right and delivered a low cross into the danger zone.
Harvey Barnes reacted quickly and swept the ball into the net from close range, giving Newcastle a 2-0 advantage.
It was another important contribution from Barnes, who had already tested the Palace defence during the first half. The goal was his fourth of the season and completed a highly productive spell for Newcastle immediately after half-time.
Within the space of 11 minutes, Newcastle had transformed a goalless contest into a comfortable lead.
Palace now needed to find a response, but the Eagles struggled to produce the quality required to seriously threaten Newcastle’s advantage.
Palace Search for a Way Back
Crystal Palace attempted to change the direction of the match with substitutions, bringing on Eddie Nketiah and Darío Osorio.
Osorio provided some energy during the closing stages and came close to pulling one back for the hosts. He tested Horníček with a strike from distance, but the Newcastle goalkeeper was equal to the effort.
Another attempt from Osorio later in the match again required a save from Horníček.
Palace continued to push forward, but Newcastle’s defence remained disciplined. Dan Burn and Fabian Schär helped maintain the visitors’ defensive shape, while Newcastle’s midfield worked hard to prevent Palace from finding easy routes into the penalty area.
The Eagles finished with more total shots, but the majority of their attempts failed to seriously trouble the Newcastle goal. The visitors, meanwhile, made their opportunities count when it mattered most.
Newcastle also managed the final stages intelligently, slowing the tempo when necessary and protecting their two-goal advantage.
The result was ultimately comfortable for the visitors, despite Palace having enjoyed periods of control earlier in the contest.
Lukáš Horníček Named Man of the Match
While Osula and Barnes deserved the headlines for their goals, goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček was a major reason Newcastle were able to leave Selhurst Park with a clean sheet.
Horníček was especially important during the first half, when Palace had opportunities to establish an advantage. His quick reactions prevented Mateta from finding the breakthrough, while he also dealt confidently with Palace’s attempts from outside the penalty area.
His importance became even clearer after Newcastle moved 2-0 ahead. Palace increased their attacking pressure and attempted to reduce the deficit, but Horníček repeatedly stood between the hosts and a potential comeback.
Sofascore named the Newcastle goalkeeper its Player of the Match, giving him an 8.2 rating and highlighting four saves, including important interventions inside the penalty area. He also finished with an impressive goals-prevented figure, underlining his influence on the clean sheet.
For a goalkeeper making his way into Newcastle’s side, it was a performance that demonstrated composure and reliability when his team needed him most.
Newcastle Back on Track
The 2-0 victory represents an important result for Newcastle United after a difficult spell.
The Magpies had suffered defeats against Coventry City and Aston Villa before travelling to Selhurst Park, increasing the importance of getting a positive result. Jaissle responded by making five changes to his starting lineup, with Osula, Murphy, Dedić, Dan Burn and Fabian Schär among those brought into the team.
Those changes ultimately paid off.
Newcastle were not at their best during the opening half, but their ability to improve immediately after the interval made the difference. Osula provided the breakthrough, Barnes followed with a second, and Horníček ensured Palace could not find a route back into the game.
For Crystal Palace, the defeat adds further pressure following another disappointing Premier League performance. The Eagles had opportunities but lacked the cutting edge required to punish Newcastle before the visitors took control.
Newcastle, meanwhile, can take confidence from a professional away performance that combined attacking efficiency with defensive discipline.
The Magpies will now look to build on the result and climb further up the Premier League table, while Palace face the task of finding a response after another frustrating afternoon at Selhurst Park.
Final score: Crystal Palace 0-2 Newcastle United
Goals: William Osula 47’, Harvey Barnes 58’
Man of the Match: Lukáš Horníček
