Wijnaldum and his teammates celebrate after sealing the win.

Al-Ittihad strengthened their position near the top of the Saudi Pro League table after recording a 2-0 victory over Diriyah on Friday, October 23, with George Ilenikhena and Georginio Wijnaldum finding the net for the Jeddah side.

The result gave Al-Ittihad another important three points in their pursuit of the leading teams and extended the positive momentum they have built in recent league matches. Although Diriyah enjoyed slightly more possession, Al-Ittihad were far more threatening in front of goal and produced the greater number of clear attempts.

The home side finished the contest with 20 shots compared with Diriyah’s 12. Seven of Al-Ittihad’s efforts were on target, while Diriyah managed only one attempt that tested the goalkeeper. The numbers reflected a match in which Al-Ittihad were able to turn their attacking pressure into goals despite not dominating possession.

Ilenikhena breaks the deadlock

Al-Ittihad began the match with intent and spent much of the opening period looking for a way through the Diriyah defence.

Their pressure finally paid off in the 30th minute when Nigerian striker George Ilenikhena opened the scoring.

The goal came after Houssem Aouar’s effort was saved by Diriyah goalkeeper Amin Bukhari, but the rebound fell kindly for Ilenikhena, who reacted quickly to finish from close range.

The goal was initially subjected to a VAR review before being confirmed, allowing Al-Ittihad to take a 1-0 lead.

For Ilenikhena, the strike continued an impressive run of form in front of goal. His latest effort was reported as his sixth league goal of the campaign, underlining the growing importance of the young Nigerian to Al-Ittihad’s attack. (Arab News)

Diriyah attempted to respond before the interval, but Al-Ittihad’s defence remained organised and limited their opponents to very few dangerous opportunities.

The visitors went into the break trailing 1-0, despite having enough possession to suggest they could cause problems after the restart.

Al-Ittihad remain in control

The second half saw Al-Ittihad continue to create opportunities, while Diriyah tried to find a route back into the contest.

Al-Ittihad made changes at the break, with Youssef En-Nesyri replacing Ilenikhena and Dion Lopy also entering the game. The substitutions helped the hosts maintain their attacking threat while giving the team additional energy in midfield and attack. (Arab News)

Diriyah also made several changes in an attempt to change the direction of the game, including the introduction of Darwin Núñez.

However, Al-Ittihad remained difficult to break down.

The hosts’ attacking statistics demonstrated their superiority in terms of creating chances. They registered 20 shots during the match, with seven finding the target. Diriyah had 12 attempts but managed just one shot on target. Al-Ittihad also recorded eight corners, showing how frequently they were able to push their opponents back. (SportMeridian)

Diriyah did have slightly more possession, controlling 51 per cent of the ball compared with Al-Ittihad’s 49 per cent. However, possession did not translate into enough meaningful chances for the visitors.

Wijnaldum puts the result beyond doubt

With Diriyah still within one goal of their opponents, Al-Ittihad needed another moment to completely settle the match.

That moment arrived in the 77th minute.

Youssef En-Nesyri was brought down inside the penalty area after getting onto a loose ball, giving Al-Ittihad the opportunity to double their advantage from the spot.

Georginio Wijnaldum stepped forward and made no mistake, sending the penalty into the net to make it 2-0.

The goal effectively ended Diriyah’s hopes of earning anything from the match and gave Al-Ittihad the breathing room they needed to see out the final stages.

Wijnaldum was substituted shortly after scoring, with Marwan Al-Sahafi coming on in the 78th minute. Al-Ittihad then focused on managing the remainder of the game rather than taking unnecessary risks.

Diriyah’s night became even more difficult deep into stoppage time when Abdulelah Al-Malki was shown a red card in the 96th minute.

With the visitors reduced to 10 men, Al-Ittihad comfortably protected their advantage until the final whistle.

Al-Ittihad’s defensive discipline

While the goals naturally attracted the attention, Al-Ittihad’s defensive performance was equally important.

Diriyah managed only one shot on target throughout the entire match, a statistic that demonstrated how effectively Al-Ittihad restricted their opponents in dangerous areas.

The hosts also remained composed despite Diriyah having slightly more of the ball. Rather than chasing possession for its own sake, Al-Ittihad concentrated on creating opportunities whenever they recovered the ball.

That approach helped them finish the game with a convincing advantage in shots on target and ultimately another clean sheet.

The 2-0 victory also continued an encouraging run for Al-Ittihad, who had produced a 4-1 away victory over Al-Ettifaq in their previous league outing. The latest result further strengthened their challenge near the top of the table. (Arab News)

Man of the Match: George Ilenikhena

George Ilenikhena is NewsVaultHQ’s Man of the Match.

The Nigerian forward made the difference when Al-Ittihad needed someone to break the deadlock.

His 30th-minute goal gave the hosts control of the game and rewarded their attacking pressure in the opening half. More importantly, his movement and positioning continued to create problems for the Diriyah defence before he was replaced at half-time.

Although Wijnaldum also deserves credit for converting the penalty that sealed the victory, Ilenikhena’s contribution was crucial because his goal changed the complexion of the contest.

His recent form is becoming increasingly significant for Al-Ittihad. Having scored again against Diriyah, the Nigerian striker is establishing himself as an important attacking option for a side with ambitions of challenging near the top of the Saudi Pro League.

A valuable three points for Al-Ittihad

Al-Ittihad ultimately had too much quality and attacking efficiency for Diriyah to handle.

The 2-0 scoreline reflected a controlled performance in which the hosts created the clearer opportunities, defended effectively and punished their opponents at important moments.

Ilenikhena’s first-half strike gave them the lead, Wijnaldum’s penalty provided the insurance goal, and the defence ensured Diriyah never found a way back into the contest.

For Al-Ittihad, the victory represents another step in their push toward the top of the Saudi Pro League. With their attacking players continuing to contribute and their defence producing clean sheets, the Jeddah club will believe they have the consistency required to remain involved in the title race.

Diriyah, meanwhile, will have to regroup after a frustrating evening in which their possession failed to produce enough danger in the final third.

For Al-Ittihad, the message was clear: they may not always need to dominate the ball to dominate the important moments.

Final score: Al-Ittihad 2-0 Diriyah.
