Al-Nassr secured an important 1-0 victory over NEOM SC on Tuesday night, with João Félix scoring the only goal of the game in a closely contested Saudi Pro League encounter.

The Riyadh side dominated possession and created the greater volume of opportunities, but they were made to work hard for all three points. The match also attracted significant attention because Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty and struggled to find the finishing touch in front of goal.

According to the official Saudi Pro League match data, Al-Nassr finished with 58 per cent possession and recorded 17 shots compared with NEOM’s seven. However, only two of the home side’s efforts were on target, highlighting how difficult it was for them to turn their control into clear-cut chances.

Despite those difficulties, Al-Nassr eventually found the breakthrough through Félix, who once again proved decisive for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Ronaldo Misses Crucial Penalty

The biggest talking point of the opening half came deep into stoppage time.

João Félix won a penalty after being brought down inside the NEOM penalty area, with the referee awarding the spot-kick following a VAR review. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped forward with the opportunity to give Al-Nassr the lead before the interval.

However, the Portugal captain could not convert.

Ronaldo’s right-footed attempt went wide of the target, leaving the score 0-0 at half-time. It was a rare disappointment from the penalty spot for a player who has built a reputation for being one of football’s most reliable penalty takers.

The miss was particularly frustrating because Ronaldo was searching for another goal as he continues his pursuit of the remarkable 1,000-goal milestone. His failure to convert meant Al-Nassr had to return for the second half without the advantage they had been seeking.

Ronaldo’s difficult evening did not end there. He later missed another excellent opportunity, including a chance with the goal effectively unguarded, before also sending another effort wide. Reports described the performance as an unusually wasteful outing for the veteran forward.

João Félix Produces the Moment of Quality

While Ronaldo struggled to find his finishing touch, João Félix continued to demonstrate why he has become such an important attacking figure for Al-Nassr.

The Portuguese forward had already been involved in some of his team’s most promising attacking moments before eventually producing the decisive strike.

The breakthrough arrived in the 61st minute.

Samú Costa helped move the ball forward before the attack developed down the right side. Ângelo then played the ball towards the edge of the area, where Félix found space and unleashed a powerful right-footed effort.

The strike flew beyond the NEOM goalkeeper and into the net, giving Al-Nassr a 1-0 advantage.

It was a goal of real quality and exactly the kind of moment Al-Nassr needed after failing to take their earlier opportunities.

Félix’s contribution was more than just the goal. He was heavily involved in the attacking play, won the penalty that Ronaldo missed and remained one of the most dangerous players on the pitch.

João Félix was the Man of the Match, capping another influential performance with the winning goal.

NEOM Threaten a Late Equaliser

NEOM did not simply accept defeat after falling behind.

The visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser and came extremely close to finding one shortly after Félix’s goal. Alexandre Lacazette produced one of NEOM’s best opportunities when he connected with a cross, but his header struck the post.

That moment served as a warning for Al-Nassr, who could not afford to become complacent.

NEOM continued to look dangerous during the final stages, while Al-Nassr had opportunities of their own to put the result beyond doubt. Ronaldo came close again but could not add a second goal.

The hosts ultimately managed the closing stages well enough to protect their narrow advantage and claim another three points.

Al-Nassr’s Statistical Advantage

The final statistics showed Al-Nassr’s control of the contest.

Postecoglou’s team enjoyed 58 per cent possession compared with NEOM’s 42 per cent and attempted 17 shots to the visitors’ seven. Al-Nassr also registered 12 attempts from inside the box, compared with four for NEOM.

The hosts also had more shots on target, two compared with one for NEOM, although the low number of accurate attempts showed that their attacking play lacked the cutting edge needed to finish the game comfortably.

Al-Nassr also recorded 12 shots off target, while NEOM had five. The hosts were therefore forced to remain alert until the final whistle despite having the majority of the ball and chances.

The narrow scoreline also reflected NEOM’s ability to remain competitive throughout the match.

Ronaldo’s Night to Forget

For Ronaldo, the victory provided some relief after a personally frustrating performance.

The Al-Nassr captain had several opportunities to get his name on the scoresheet but was unable to take advantage of them. His missed penalty was the most significant of those chances because it could have changed the entire complexion of the game.

Instead, Félix stepped up when his team needed him most.

The result means Ronaldo’s teammates were able to cover for his lack of goals on the night, with Félix’s strike ultimately deciding the contest.

It was also an important response from Al-Nassr, who continue to compete near the top of the Saudi Pro League table. The victory moved them to within three points of leaders Al-Qadsiah, with Al-Nassr still having a game in hand.

Félix Continues to Shine

For Félix, the performance adds another memorable chapter to what has been an impressive spell with Al-Nassr.

The Portuguese forward has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to influence games, and his latest performance showed that his importance extends beyond simply scoring goals.

Winning the penalty, creating danger and then scoring the decisive goal made Félix the central figure in Al-Nassr’s victory.

Ronaldo may have endured a night he will want to forget, but Al-Nassr will be far more concerned with the result. Three points were secured, their title challenge remains alive, and Félix once again showed that he can provide the decisive moments when the team needs them most.

Final score: Al-Nassr 1-0 NEOM SC.

Goal: João Félix 61’

Man of the Match: João Félix.
