Late drama at San Siro!

Inter Milan produced one of the most dramatic finishes of the Serie A season on Sunday as they came from behind to defeat Fiorentina 2-1 at San Siro, scoring twice in stoppage time to complete a remarkable turnaround.

The Nerazzurri appeared destined for a frustrating home defeat after Fiorentina took the lead midway through the second half. However, Cristian Chivu’s side refused to accept the result and launched a late assault that completely changed the game.

Marcus Thuram levelled the contest in the 91st minute before Piotr Zielinski converted a penalty deep into stoppage time to send the home supporters into celebration.

The victory moved Inter onto 22 points after eight league matches, leaving them level with Lazio at the top of the Serie A table. Fiorentina, meanwhile, remained in the lower reaches of the standings with just four points.

Fiorentina Hold Firm in the First Half

Inter dominated the opening stages and spent long periods controlling possession, but Fiorentina defended with discipline and made it difficult for the hosts to turn their territorial advantage into a goal.

The visitors were helped by an outstanding performance from goalkeeper David De Gea, who repeatedly denied Inter during a first half in which the home side created several dangerous opportunities.

Thuram was particularly active in the final third, testing De Gea with efforts from inside and around the penalty area. Francesco Pio Esposito also came close with a header, but the Fiorentina goalkeeper produced an excellent reaction save.

Inter continued to push as the half progressed, yet the breakthrough refused to arrive. Fiorentina went into the interval with the score still 0-0, despite Inter having created enough chances to feel disappointed not to be ahead.

Jimenez Gives Fiorentina a Shock Lead

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Inter continuing to have the greater share of the ball and producing the majority of the attacking threat.

Against the run of play, however, Fiorentina found the breakthrough in the 65th minute.

Álex Jiménez produced a spectacular finish from distance to put the visitors 1-0 ahead. The strike caught Inter goalkeeper Ivan Provedel and the home defence by surprise, giving Fiorentina a lead that appeared increasingly valuable as the clock continued to run down.

Inter immediately increased the pressure.

The home side continued creating openings, while Fiorentina attempted to protect their advantage and frustrate their opponents. Inter also hit the crossbar twice through Carlos Augusto in a short spell as the pressure around the Fiorentina penalty area intensified.

De Gea remained one of the main reasons the visitors stayed in front, making another important stop from Thuram as Inter searched desperately for an equaliser.

With time running out, the match looked to be slipping away from the Nerazzurri.

Thuram Starts the Comeback

Inter finally got their reward in the first minute of stoppage time.

Thuram, who had battled throughout the afternoon, produced the moment the home side needed. The French forward combined with Andy Diouf before finding the space to fire a precise left-footed finish beyond De Gea.

The equaliser completely changed the atmosphere inside San Siro.

What had looked like a disappointing afternoon suddenly became an opportunity to win all three points. Inter continued attacking rather than settling for a draw, and Thuram once again found himself at the centre of the action.

The forward drove into the penalty area and was brought down by Víctor Valdepeñas, giving the referee little reason to hesitate before awarding a penalty.

With the match deep into added time, Piotr Zielinski stepped forward.

The Polish midfielder showed remarkable composure under enormous pressure, sending the ball beyond De Gea to complete the comeback and give Inter a 2-1 lead in the 97th minute.

Inter’s Dominance Reflected in the Numbers

The final statistics showed just how much pressure Inter had applied throughout the contest.

Inter finished with 64 percent possession and registered an extraordinary 33 shots, compared with just seven from Fiorentina. The hosts also recorded 11 shots on target, while Fiorentina managed only two.

Inter had 26 attempts from inside the box and six corners, demonstrating how frequently they were able to push Fiorentina back. The visitors, by contrast, were limited to three attempts inside the penalty area.

Despite producing so much attacking pressure, Inter had to wait until the final minutes to find the breakthrough.

That made the victory even more significant because it demonstrated the team’s ability to keep believing even when the result appeared to be going against them.

Man of the Match: Marcus Thuram

Marcus Thuram was the clear Man of the Match for Inter.

The French forward was a constant threat throughout the encounter and refused to disappear despite being repeatedly denied by De Gea.

Thuram finished the match with the equalising goal and then played a decisive role in the winning goal by winning the penalty converted by Zielinski.

According to Sofascore, Thuram recorded an 8.6 rating, nine shots and four efforts on target. He also created two key passes, won eight duels and drew four fouls, underlining his influence beyond simply scoring the goal.

His performance was particularly important because Inter needed someone capable of breaking through Fiorentina’s defensive structure. Thuram continued making aggressive runs, challenging defenders physically and looking for openings even after several of his earlier attempts had been stopped.

His equaliser was the reward for that persistence.

More importantly, his involvement did not end after scoring. Thuram immediately continued looking for another opportunity and eventually earned the penalty that allowed Inter to complete the turnaround.

Football Italia also named Thuram as its Man of the Match, highlighting his equaliser and the penalty he won as the decisive contributions in Inter’s dramatic victory.

Another Remarkable Inter Comeback

The victory was more than just three points for Inter. It continued a remarkable pattern of resilience from Chivu’s side.

Inter have now collected 13 points from losing positions this season, with their comeback against Fiorentina completed entirely after the 90th minute. The club’s official account noted that this was only the third time in Inter’s history that they had overturned a deficit to win after the 90th minute.

Fiorentina will be left wondering how they failed to take anything from a match in which they were seconds away from victory.

For Inter, however, the final whistle brought another statement of character. The Nerazzurri controlled the majority of the match, created numerous opportunities and continued pushing until the final moments.

Thuram provided the spark, while Zielinski delivered the decisive finish.

Inter now sit at the top of Serie A alongside Lazio on 22 points, maintaining their unbeaten start after eight matches. Fiorentina, meanwhile, must regroup quickly after watching a valuable away victory disappear in the closing minutes.

At San Siro, defeat turned into victory in the space of just a few minutes — and once again, Inter showed why they remain one of the teams to watch in the Serie A title race.
