Flamingos Stun Defending Champions North Korea to Seal U-17 World Cup Knockout Spot
Nigeria’s Flamingos produced one of their finest performances of the tournament, defeating defending champions Korea DPR 3-1 to qualify for the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

Nigeria’s Flamingos have secured their place in the knockout stage of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after producing a stunning 3-1 victory over defending champions Korea DPR in their final Group B fixture.
The Nigerian youngsters entered Friday’s decisive encounter knowing that a strong result was needed to keep their tournament campaign alive. They responded in emphatic fashion, scoring three times before the defending champions managed a late consolation.
The result marked one of the standout performances of the tournament so far and sent a strong message about Nigeria’s ambitions in Morocco.
The match was played at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé, where the Flamingos showed composure and attacking intent against a Korea DPR side that had entered the contest as one of the most dangerous teams in the competition.
Adegbuyi gives Nigeria the perfect start
Nigeria wasted little time making their presence felt.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 15th minute, giving the Flamingos an early advantage and immediately putting pressure on the defending champions.
The goal provided Nigeria with the confidence they needed after a difficult start to the tournament. The Flamingos had suffered a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening fixture before responding with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico.
Against Korea DPR, however, Akeem Busari’s team looked determined from the opening whistle.
The early goal forced the Asian champions to chase the game, but Nigeria remained organised and continued to threaten whenever they moved forward.
Umejiaku doubles the advantage
The Flamingos’ pressure produced another reward before the break.
Oluebube Umejiaku doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 38th minute after finishing from an assist by Tosin Rafiu.
The second goal gave the Nigerian side a commanding 2-0 advantage and left Korea DPR facing a difficult task in the second half.
Rather than simply sitting back, Nigeria continued to show confidence in possession and looked capable of adding another goal whenever they advanced into dangerous areas.
Korea DPR had previously demonstrated their attacking quality during the group stage, but the Flamingos’ defensive organisation prevented the defending champions from finding a way back into the contest before half-time.
Nigeria therefore entered the interval with a two-goal cushion and 45 minutes separating them from a place in the knockout rounds.
Yusuf delivers the decisive blow
Any hopes Korea DPR had of mounting a comeback suffered another major setback shortly after the restart.
Kanyinsola Yusuf stepped up in the 56th minute and produced a superb free-kick to make it 3-0.
The goal was a major moment for Nigeria, effectively putting the Flamingos in control of the contest.
Yusuf’s strike also highlighted the quality Nigeria possessed from set pieces, with the Flamingos taking full advantage of an opportunity presented to them.
With a three-goal advantage, Busari’s players could focus on managing the remainder of the game while remaining alert to Korea DPR’s attempts to respond.
The defending champions continued searching for a breakthrough, but Nigeria remained disciplined and refused to allow their opponents to dictate the rhythm of the match.
Korea DPR pull one back
Korea DPR eventually found a way through in the 82nd minute when Yu Jong Hyang converted from the penalty spot.
The goal reduced the deficit to 3-1 and offered the defending champions a brief glimpse of hope.
Nigeria, however, remained composed during the closing stages. The Flamingos protected their advantage and ensured that Korea DPR could not turn their late pressure into another goal.
Adegbuyi appeared to have scored Nigeria’s fourth goal in the 88th minute, but the effort was later ruled out following a video review because of an infringement during the build-up.
Despite missing the opportunity to add another goal, Nigeria had already done enough to secure a memorable victory.
The final whistle confirmed a 3-1 win for the Flamingos and their progression into the Round of 16.
A remarkable turnaround for Nigeria
The victory represents a significant turnaround for the Flamingos, who had faced uncertainty after losing their opening match against Poland.
Nigeria responded to that setback by defeating Puerto Rico and then produced an even bigger statement against the defending champions.
Their group-stage campaign therefore ended with six points from three matches, following one defeat and two victories.
The win over Korea DPR is particularly impressive because the Asian side entered the tournament as defending champions and had established themselves among the leading contenders.
FIFA described Nigeria’s victory as a major shock, highlighting the significance of the Flamingos’ performance against the holders.
Flamingos show character under pressure
One of the biggest positives from the match was Nigeria’s ability to remain focused despite the pressure surrounding the fixture.
The Flamingos needed to produce a result, but they did not allow the importance of the occasion to affect their approach.
Instead, they attacked with purpose, defended with discipline and took their chances when they arrived.
Adegbuyi’s opener gave them the platform, Umejiaku extended their advantage and Yusuf’s free-kick provided the decisive moment.
The defensive unit also deserves credit for limiting a Korea DPR team that had entered the fixture with a reputation for scoring freely.
Nigeria eventually conceded from the penalty spot, but the late goal did little to change the outcome.
Yusuf stands out in impressive team display
While the victory was built on a collective performance, Kanyinsola Yusuf was among the players who made a significant impact.
Her third goal effectively settled the contest and gave Nigeria the breathing room they needed during the final stages.
Adegbuyi also played an important role by giving Nigeria the breakthrough, while Umejiaku’s first-half goal ensured that the Flamingos went into the interval with a comfortable advantage.
The performance from the entire squad, however, was ultimately what made the result possible.
What comes next for Nigeria?
With their place in the Round of 16 secured, the Flamingos can now turn their attention towards the knockout stage and the possibility of making a deep run in Morocco.
Nigeria have already shown that they can compete with the strongest teams in the tournament. Their victory over the defending champions will also provide significant confidence heading into the next round.
The Flamingos previously finished third at the 2022 edition of the competition, and this generation will now have the opportunity to try to go even further.
For Busari and his players, the message is clear: the tournament is far from over.
The victory over Korea DPR has given Nigeria renewed momentum, but the knockout stage brings an entirely different challenge. There will be no room for complacency, with every match carrying the possibility of ending their campaign.
For now, though, the Flamingos can celebrate a victory that will rank among the most impressive results of their campaign.
Nigeria came into the contest under pressure and walked away with a convincing 3-1 win over the defending champions.
The Flamingos are through to the Round of 16 — and their World Cup journey continues.
