A devastating roof collapse at a private school in Peshawar, Pakistan, has killed at least 35 people, including 34 children and a teacher, in a tragedy that has sent shockwaves through the community.

The incident happened on Thursday morning at the Al-Khair private school in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The roof suddenly gave way while pupils were attending classes, trapping several children and members of staff beneath the debris.

According to the latest reports, more than 50 people were injured in the disaster. Some of those taken to hospital were reportedly in critical condition, while emergency medical teams were placed on alert to treat the large number of casualties.

Most of the children involved were between six and 14 years old. Many of the victims were young pupils who had arrived at school expecting an ordinary day of lessons before the building suddenly collapsed around them.

The collapse reportedly affected two classrooms where second- and third-grade pupils were being taught. Large sections of the structure fell onto the classrooms, leaving children trapped beneath heavy pieces of concrete and other building materials.

Emergency services were alerted shortly after the incident and quickly sent rescue workers and ambulances to the school. Local residents also rushed to the scene and joined professional rescuers in efforts to remove the debris and reach those who were trapped.

The rescue operation continued for several hours as teams carefully searched the damaged structure. Around 100 rescuers were eventually involved in the operation, according to reports. Officials later said those believed to have been trapped had been brought out of the rubble.

The location of the school added to the difficulties faced by emergency workers. The building was situated in a densely populated area, while the surrounding roads were narrow, making it more challenging for ambulances and rescue vehicles to reach the site and transport victims.

Parents and relatives gathered around the school and nearby hospitals as news of the collapse spread. Many waited anxiously for information about their children, while others searched for relatives who had been inside the building when it came down.

Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar received a large number of injured victims and declared an emergency to manage the casualties. Medical workers treated children with different levels of injuries, with some requiring urgent attention because of the seriousness of their condition.

One injured teacher, Mahwish Zaman, described the collapse as a frightening experience. Speaking from her hospital bed, she said she had been inside her classroom when the roof came down and later regained consciousness at the hospital.

The disaster has raised serious questions about the condition of the school building and whether proper safety requirements were followed.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse. Peshawar police chief Saeed Ahmed said the owner of the school had been arrested as officials examined the structure and investigated the possible causes of its failure.

Preliminary findings pointed toward structural weakness, although investigators had not completed their assessment. Reports also indicated that recent rainfall may have contributed to weakening the building, but authorities have yet to establish a definitive cause.

A government committee is expected to examine the construction and condition of the school as part of the wider investigation. Officials will also look into whether the building had undergone appropriate inspections and whether any safety concerns had previously been identified.

The tragedy has renewed concerns about building safety in Pakistan, where structural failures have caused deaths in the past. Questions surrounding construction standards, maintenance, building inspections and enforcement of safety regulations have frequently emerged following similar incidents.

Private schools in densely populated areas often serve large numbers of families, making the safety of their buildings particularly important. Parents generally expect school operators to provide secure facilities where children can learn without being exposed to avoidable structural dangers.

The Peshawar incident could therefore increase pressure on authorities to conduct wider inspections of educational institutions. Such checks could help identify buildings that require repairs or strengthening before students and teachers are placed at risk.

Political leaders have expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif were among those who expressed grief over the deaths and called for the circumstances surrounding the collapse to be investigated.

Officials in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have also called for information about what caused the structure to fail. The investigation could determine whether negligence, construction defects, inadequate maintenance or other factors contributed to the disaster.

For the families involved, however, the investigation cannot undo the devastating loss of their loved ones. Parents who sent their children to school that morning were instead confronted with scenes of destruction, emergency vehicles and rescue teams searching through collapsed sections of the building.

Residents who witnessed the rescue operation described an atmosphere of confusion and desperation. Community members worked alongside emergency personnel as rescuers attempted to reach pupils trapped beneath the rubble and move survivors to waiting ambulances.

The incident has also highlighted the responsibility of private school operators to ensure that their facilities remain safe. Families may have little knowledge about the structural condition of buildings used by schools, making regular government inspections and proper maintenance especially important.

Authorities are now expected to determine whether the school had undergone required safety checks and whether any previous warnings about the building had been issued. The outcome of the investigation could lead to further action if officials find evidence that safety standards were ignored.

Pakistan has faced several building-related disasters over the years, prompting repeated calls for stronger enforcement of construction regulations. Experts have stressed the importance of using appropriate materials, maintaining older structures and conducting regular structural assessments, particularly in buildings occupied by children.

With the latest reported death toll standing at 35, including 34 children and a teacher, the Peshawar school collapse has become one of the country’s most devastating recent school tragedies. More than 50 people were also injured, adding to the scale of the disaster.

As authorities continue investigating, attention will remain focused on establishing exactly why the roof failed and whether the deaths could have been prevented. The findings could also determine whether additional measures are introduced to improve safety at schools across the region.

For the Peshawar community, the tragedy has left families mourning children who had simply gone to school for a normal day of learning. The investigation may provide answers about what happened, but for those who lost loved ones, the consequences of the collapse will remain long after the rescue operation has ended.
