Arsenal escaped Munich with a valuable point after Declan Rice struck eight minutes from time to complete a 2-2 comeback against Bayern Munich in a gripping Champions League league-phase encounter on Wednesday night.

The result kept Arsenal unbeaten after three matches in the competition and moved the Gunners to seven points, while Bayern remained without a defeat but were held to their second successive draw. The contest had almost everything expected from two heavyweight European sides, including attacking quality, big saves, a penalty, an early injury setback and a dramatic late equaliser.

Arsenal were forced into an early change when Bukayo Saka went off after picking up an injury. Eberechi Eze was introduced in his place, and the substitute quickly turned an unwanted situation into a positive one.

The England international opened the scoring in the 25th minute after receiving a clever pass from Martin Ødegaard. Eze drove forward before calmly finishing past Manuel Neuer to give Arsenal an early advantage. The goal was initially subjected to a VAR review, but it was eventually awarded.

Bayern responded with greater urgency and eventually found their equaliser ten minutes later. Harry Kane showed his playmaking ability by sending Alphonso Davies through with a well-weighted pass. Davies, operating in an advanced role, kept his composure and fired beyond David Raya to make it 1-1.

The goal changed the rhythm of the contest. Bayern began to threaten more regularly, while Arsenal remained dangerous whenever they could break through the home side’s pressure. Both teams created openings before the interval, but neither could find another goal.

The second half started at a frantic pace, with both goalkeepers forced into important interventions. Neuer produced a superb save to prevent Arsenal from restoring their lead, while Raya also reacted quickly to deny Bayern after a dangerous attack.

Bayern eventually moved in front in the 61st minute. A shot from Kane struck Jurriën Timber’s raised arm inside the area, leaving the referee with little choice but to award a penalty. Kane stepped up and sent Raya the wrong way, giving Bayern a 2-1 lead.

For Kane, the goal continued an extraordinary Champions League scoring run and added another chapter to his long-running personal history with Arsenal. It also looked as though the Bayern striker might have delivered the decisive moment of the night.

Arsenal, however, refused to lose their composure. Mikel Arteta’s side continued to push forward despite Bayern’s attempts to protect their advantage. The visitors increased the pressure during the closing stages, and their persistence finally paid off.

The equaliser arrived in the 82nd minute. Viktor Gyökeres helped create the opening before Rice surged into space and drilled a low finish beyond Neuer. The midfielder’s strike brought Arsenal level and completely changed the mood inside the Allianz Arena.

Rice had more than just the equaliser to celebrate. His goal capped an important individual performance in the middle of the pitch, where he helped Arsenal compete against Bayern’s physicality and quality in possession. It was also his sixth Champions League goal and his first away from home in the competition.

Bayern still had opportunities to win the match. Arsenal’s defence was tested during the final minutes, while Neuer had to remain alert at the other end. Jurriën Timber nearly completed an unlikely turnaround in stoppage time, but Neuer produced another strong save to ensure the points were shared.

The statistics reflected how closely matched the sides were. Arsenal enjoyed 58 percent possession according to the match figures, compared with Bayern’s 42 percent, while the hosts registered 13 attempts to Arsenal’s 14. Both teams managed five shots on target and each had five efforts blocked.

Those numbers underlined the competitive nature of the encounter. Arsenal had more of the ball and produced a slightly higher volume of attempts, but Bayern repeatedly showed why they remain one of Europe’s most dangerous teams when they can attack quickly.

For Arsenal, the draw was particularly encouraging because of the circumstances. Losing Saka early could have disrupted their plans, especially against a Bayern side playing at home. Instead, Eze stepped into the game and scored, while Rice emerged late to rescue the result.

The performance also highlighted Arsenal’s growing depth. Eze’s introduction gave the visitors another attacking option, while Gyökeres contributed to the move that produced the equaliser. Rather than allowing the loss of Saka to define their evening, Arsenal adapted and stayed competitive against one of the strongest opponents they could face in the league phase.

Bayern, meanwhile, will be disappointed not to hold on after twice taking the lead. They had enough moments to win the match, particularly after Kane’s penalty, but Arsenal’s persistence prevented them from claiming all three points.

The draw leaves Arsenal on seven points from three matches after wins over Napoli and Lille followed by the draw in Munich. Bayern move to five points after a win and two draws. Arsenal therefore remain firmly among the teams well positioned in the league-phase race, while Bayern will know they need to turn competitive performances into victories as the competition progresses.

Man of the Match: Harry Kane

Harry Kane was named Player of the Match after another influential display for Bayern. The England striker was involved in both of Bayern’s goals, providing the assist for Davies before confidently converting the penalty himself.

Kane’s performance was not limited to his finishing. His passing repeatedly caused problems for Arsenal, particularly when he dropped deeper to link midfield with attack. His ability to switch between creator and scorer made him one of the most difficult players for Arsenal to contain.

Although Rice’s late equaliser denied Bayern the victory, Kane remained the standout individual on the night. His goal and assist, combined with his involvement in Bayern’s attacking play, made him a fitting choice for the award.

For Arsenal, Rice and Eze were the biggest positives. Eze responded brilliantly to Saka’s early injury, while Rice delivered when his team needed him most.

In the end, neither side could claim victory, but the 2-2 draw provided a fitting result for a match that swung repeatedly between Bayern control and Arsenal resistance. Both teams remain unbeaten in the Champions League, and the points earned in Munich could prove valuable when the league phase reaches its decisive stages.
