Manchester City 5-1 AEK Athens: Foden Stars as City Return to Winning Ways

Manchester City delivered a dominant performance at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night, defeating AEK Athens 5-1 in the UEFA Champions League league phase as Phil Foden stole the show with a brilliant hat-trick.

Elliot Anderson opened the scoring for the hosts in the 12th minute before Foden doubled City’s advantage shortly before half-time. AEK Athens briefly threatened a comeback when Stavros Pilios pulled one back seven minutes after the interval, but Rayan Cherki quickly restored City’s two-goal cushion.

Foden then took control of the contest, scoring twice more to complete his hat-trick and put the result beyond doubt. The victory gave Manchester City an emphatic response in Europe after their previous Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Anderson Gives City the Perfect Start

Manchester City began the game with purpose and immediately looked comfortable in possession. Despite making several changes to the side, the home team quickly established control and began forcing AEK Athens deeper into their own half.

The breakthrough arrived after 12 minutes following a free-kick from Enzo Fernández. The delivery caused problems inside the penalty area before the ball came back off the crossbar.

Elliot Anderson reacted quickest to the loose ball and finished from close range to give City the lead. It was an important moment for the midfielder, who scored his first goal for Manchester City since arriving at the club during the summer transfer window.

The early goal settled the hosts and allowed them to dictate the tempo. AEK struggled to maintain possession for long periods, while City’s movement continued to create openings around the visitors’ defensive structure.

The statistics reflected City’s control. Manchester City finished the match with 64 per cent possession and registered 17 shots compared with AEK’s 11. The English side also managed seven attempts on target, more than twice the visitors’ total of three.

Foden Doubles the Advantage

After controlling much of the opening period, City eventually found a second goal through the player who would become the central figure of the night.

Foden struck in the 34th minute after Manchester City worked the ball through the right side. Rico Lewis played an important role in the move before Foden finished confidently to make it 2-0.

The goal continued what was becoming an impressive return to form for the England international. Foden had recently ended a long wait for a goal and followed that up with another finish against AEK, giving him two goals in two matches.

City went into half-time with a comfortable 2-0 lead and appeared to have the match firmly under control.

AEK, however, were not prepared to simply surrender after the break.

Pilios Gives AEK Hope

The Greek side came out with greater attacking intent in the second half and managed to punish City on the counter-attack.

Seven minutes after the restart, Stavros Pilios reduced the deficit to 2-1 with a composed finish. The goal suddenly gave AEK a reason to believe they could make the closing stages uncomfortable for the hosts.

For a brief period, the atmosphere around the match changed. City had been cruising, but AEK’s response demonstrated that one mistake could potentially reopen the contest.

Manchester City responded almost immediately.

Cherki Restores City’s Control

Just five minutes after Pilios’ goal, Rayan Cherki restored City’s two-goal advantage with a superb individual finish.

Foden was involved again, providing the pass for Cherki, who used a clever movement to create space before cutting inside and finding the bottom corner.

The goal was crucial because it stopped AEK from building momentum and allowed City to regain complete control of the match.

Cherki’s performance was another positive for manager Enzo Maresca. The French attacking midfielder showed confidence in possession and repeatedly looked capable of creating something whenever he received the ball in dangerous areas.

With City back in control, the remaining question was how many more goals the home side could score.

Foden Completes His Hat-Trick

The answer came from Foden.

The Manchester City midfielder scored his second goal of the night in the 65th minute, producing another composed finish to move the score to 4-1.

By that point, AEK were struggling to cope with City’s attacking movement. The visitors had already been forced to defend for long periods, and the additional pressure eventually created more gaps for the home side to exploit.

Foden completed his hat-trick 11 minutes later.

In the 76th minute, he found the net again to complete a memorable individual performance and make it 5-1. The third goal capped a night in which almost everything Foden attempted in the final third seemed to work.

His three goals also made him the clear standout performer on the pitch. According to Sofascore’s match assessment, Foden finished with a perfect 10 rating, while other reports also highlighted his decisive contribution to the victory.

Manchester City Dominate the Numbers

The final scoreline accurately reflected City’s superiority, although AEK did manage to produce more attacking moments than the scoreline might initially suggest.

Manchester City had 64 per cent possession compared with AEK’s 36 per cent. City recorded 17 total shots, with seven on target, while AEK had 11 attempts and three efforts on target.

The hosts also registered 13 attempts from inside the box, demonstrating how often they were able to penetrate AEK’s defensive area. The visitors, by comparison, had only three attempts from inside the box and were forced to rely more heavily on efforts from outside the area.

City also blocked six AEK attempts, while the visitors blocked three from the home team.

There were no penalties awarded during the match, with Manchester City eventually finishing the night with a five-goal haul despite AEK managing to find the net once.

The numbers underlined the overall story of the game: AEK had moments, particularly during the opening stages of the second half, but Manchester City possessed the greater quality and attacking efficiency.

Foden Named Man of the Match

Man of the Match: Phil Foden

There was little doubt about the outstanding player on the night.

Foden scored three goals, helped create another and played a major role in City’s attacking threat throughout the match. His movement made it difficult for AEK’s defenders to contain him, while his finishing was clinical whenever opportunities arrived.

His first goal gave City breathing room before half-time, while his involvement in Cherki’s goal helped Manchester City recover immediately after Pilios had reduced the deficit.

The second-half brace then put the game beyond AEK’s reach.

Foden’s performance was particularly significant because it came during a period in which the England international had been working to rediscover his best form. He had reportedly gone around 10 months without scoring before his recent goal against Ipswich, only to follow that up with three against AEK.

His hat-trick therefore represented more than simply three goals. It was a statement performance from a player who appeared full of confidence and determination.

City Get Their Champions League Campaign Back on Track

The victory was an important one for Manchester City after their previous European setback.

City had suffered a 4-2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in their previous Champions League outing, increasing the importance of collecting three points against AEK Athens.

Maresca’s decision to rotate his team also provided an opportunity for several players to make an impression. Floyd Samba and Allan were handed Champions League debuts, while other squad members stepped into starting roles as City maintained their attacking quality despite changes to the lineup.

The result also gave City their second Champions League victory of the campaign and kept their league-phase campaign moving in the right direction.

AEK Athens can take some encouragement from the fact that they managed to score at the Etihad and briefly reduce the deficit to one goal, but City’s response showed the considerable difference in attacking quality between the two sides.

For Manchester City, the night belonged to Foden.

Anderson’s early goal provided the foundation, Cherki’s strike ended AEK’s brief comeback hopes, but Foden’s three-goal display turned an already convincing victory into a statement result.

Manchester City ultimately walked away with a 5-1 victory, while Foden left the Etihad with the match ball and the Man of the Match award after producing one of his most influential performances of the season.
