Liverpool produced another memorable European comeback on Tuesday night as they recovered from a two-goal deficit to defeat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield and maintain their perfect start to the UEFA Champions League league phase.

The Reds looked in serious trouble after Villarreal raced into a 2-0 lead inside the opening half-hour, but they responded with four unanswered goals to turn the match around. Alexis Mac Allister scored twice, while Ronald Araújo and Florian Wirtz also found the net before Tani Oluwaseyi pulled one back late for the visitors.

The victory gave Liverpool their third consecutive win in the Champions League this season and extended their 100 per cent record in the competition.

Villarreal Make Fast Start

Liverpool were caught cold in the opening minutes, with Villarreal taking advantage of an early defensive mistake.

Georges Mikautadze opened the scoring in the fourth minute after capitalising on uncertainty at the back. Virgil van Dijk attempted to head a long ball back towards Alisson, but his effort fell into the path of the Villarreal striker, who kept his composure before finishing past the Liverpool goalkeeper.

The early setback unsettled the home side, and Villarreal continued to find space as Liverpool struggled to establish control.

The Spanish side eventually doubled their advantage in the 29th minute. Sergi Cardona broke forward after Villarreal worked the ball through Liverpool’s midfield, and the left-back finished calmly to make it 2-0.

Liverpool had been in danger of allowing the match to slip away, but they responded before the interval.

Mac Allister Starts the Fightback

Liverpool’s comeback began in the 36th minute when Mac Allister rose to meet an inviting delivery and headed the ball beyond Peter Gulacsi.

The goal immediately changed the atmosphere inside Anfield. Liverpool began playing with greater urgency, while Villarreal were forced deeper and found it increasingly difficult to maintain the control they had enjoyed earlier in the half.

The equaliser arrived just before half-time.

Rio Ngumoha delivered a dangerous ball into the area, and Ronald Araújo reacted quickest at the far post to head Liverpool level in first-half stoppage time.

The teams went into the break at 2-2, despite Liverpool having been two goals behind for much of the opening period.

Liverpool Take Control After the Break

Liverpool returned for the second half with a completely different level of intensity.

The home side pushed Villarreal back and began creating opportunities regularly. Ngumoha was particularly dangerous, repeatedly taking on defenders and providing Liverpool with an attacking outlet.

The pressure eventually produced Liverpool’s third goal in the 65th minute.

Ngumoha received the ball on the right and showed impressive composure to work his way beyond his marker before delivering a low pass into the path of Mac Allister. The Argentine midfielder met the opportunity with a powerful finish that went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Mac Allister had completed his brace, while Liverpool had finally turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 advantage.

Just three minutes later, Liverpool extended their lead.

Florian Wirtz found space inside the Villarreal penalty area before producing a composed left-footed finish into the far corner. The goal capped an excellent spell for the Reds, who had scored three times in little more than half an hour after falling two goals behind.

Wirtz’s goal also continued his recent improvement, with the Germany international contributing another important moment as he grows into his role under Andoni Iraola.

Villarreal Refuse to Give Up

Despite Liverpool’s dominance after the interval, Villarreal refused to surrender.

The visitors continued searching for a way back into the match and were rewarded in the 87th minute when Oluwaseyi finished from close range to reduce the deficit to 4-3.

The late goal suddenly made the closing stages extremely tense.

Liverpool had created enough opportunities to put the game beyond doubt, but Villarreal’s late pressure meant the home side could not afford to switch off. The Reds remained composed during the final minutes and eventually saw out the victory.

The final whistle brought relief around Anfield as Liverpool secured all three points from a match that had looked almost lost during the opening half-hour.

Ngumoha Named Man of the Match

While Mac Allister’s two goals were crucial to the comeback, Rio Ngumoha was named Liverpool’s Player of the Match after a remarkable display.

The 18-year-old winger provided two assists and was a constant threat to Villarreal’s defence. His second-half run and low cross created Mac Allister’s decisive third goal, while his earlier delivery helped Liverpool equalise through Araújo.

Ngumoha’s performance also placed him in the Champions League record books. At 18 years and 52 days old, he became the youngest Liverpool player to register a goal or assist in the competition. He also became one of the youngest players to provide two assists in a Champions League match.

Liverpool’s official post-match supporters’ poll resulted in Ngumoha being the clear Player of the Match, underlining how influential his contribution was to the victory.

Liverpool Show Their Fighting Spirit

The victory was significant not only because of the three points but also because of the manner in which Liverpool earned them.

The Reds were two goals behind before the half-hour mark and had looked vulnerable defensively. Instead of allowing the setback to dictate the result, they responded with greater attacking intensity and completely changed the direction of the contest.

Liverpool finished with 22 shots compared with Villarreal’s 14, while possession was narrowly in the hosts’ favour at 53 per cent to 47 per cent. The numbers reflected a match in which both sides created danger, but Liverpool ultimately made more of their opportunities.

Mac Allister’s finishing, Wirtz’s growing confidence and Ngumoha’s fearless attacking display gave Liverpool the quality they needed to complete the turnaround.

For Villarreal, the defeat will be particularly frustrating after such an impressive start. Mikautadze and Cardona had put the visitors in an excellent position, but they were unable to withstand Liverpool’s second-half pressure.

Liverpool, meanwhile, can take plenty of encouragement from another comeback at Anfield. The result keeps their Champions League campaign perfect after three league-phase matches and gives Iraola’s side another important European victory.

The Reds now have momentum on their side, but the defensive problems exposed by Villarreal will remain an area for improvement. Against stronger opponents, conceding twice so early could prove much more difficult to overcome.

For now, however, Liverpool can celebrate another dramatic European night at Anfield — one in which they went from two goals down to winning 4-3, with Mac Allister providing the goals and Ngumoha stealing the spotlight.
