Lisandro Martinez Launches Extraordinary Attack on Manchester United Hierarchy After Atletico Madrid Defeat
Lisandro Martinez has publicly questioned Manchester United’s recruitment strategy after the club suffered a 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid, with the result extending United’s difficult start to the season.

Martinez Turns Up Pressure on Manchester United Hierarchy
Manchester United’s difficult start to the 2026/27 season took another damaging turn on Tuesday night as Atletico Madrid secured a 2-0 Champions League victory at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
The defeat was followed by an extraordinary post-match interview from United defender Lisandro Martinez, who openly questioned the club’s hierarchy and called for greater investment in the squad.
Martinez did not hide his frustration after another disappointing result, making it clear that he believes Manchester United’s problems extend beyond manager Michael Carrick and the players on the pitch.
The Argentina international said the club needed to have done more during the summer transfer window if United were serious about competing with the best teams in Europe.
“I expect more from our technical director,” Martinez said, specifically pointing towards the club’s recruitment and technical leadership.
He also argued that United needed more players to compete at the highest level, particularly after watching other clubs strengthen their squads during the summer.
The comments immediately created another major talking point around Manchester United, with the club already under pressure following a sequence of disappointing results.
According to reports, United invested around £155 million on four major summer signings after finishing third in the Premier League last season and securing Champions League football for the first time in three years. However, Martinez believes the squad still has weaknesses that were not properly addressed.
Atletico Madrid Strike Early
On the pitch, Atletico Madrid needed just 53 seconds to take control of the match.
Pablo Barrios opened the scoring almost immediately after kickoff, capitalising on space inside the Manchester United defence before finding the back of the net.
It was exactly the type of start United could not afford, especially with pressure already building around the team and Carrick.
Atletico continued to threaten after taking the lead, while United struggled to establish consistent control of the match.
The visitors did have opportunities to respond. Bryan Mbeumo came close on more than one occasion, while Bruno Fernandes also had chances as United searched for an equaliser.
Jan Oblak, however, remained a major obstacle for the English side.
United appeared to have escaped another setback shortly before half-time when Atletico thought they had doubled their advantage. Johnny Cardoso found the net, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review after a handball by Marcos Llorente during the build-up.
That decision kept United within touching distance going into the second half.
The visitors showed periods of improvement after the interval, but Atletico continued to create the more dangerous openings.
Julian Alvarez struck the post with a powerful effort, while United struggled to turn possession into clear chances.
Bruno Fernandes came close, but the Atletico defence continued to protect its lead.
The game changed significantly in the 75th minute when Leny Yoro was shown a red card following a VAR review for denying a goalscoring opportunity.
Playing with ten men made an already difficult task even harder for United.
Four minutes later, Atletico finally got the second goal they had been pushing for.
Ademola Lookman reacted quickest to a rebound and fired the ball into the net in the 79th minute, putting Atletico 2-0 ahead and effectively ending United’s hopes of rescuing anything from the match.
Atletico Madrid Deserve Credit
While much of the discussion after the match has centred on Manchester United’s problems, Atletico Madrid deserve significant credit for their performance.
Diego Simeone’s side started aggressively and immediately exposed the spaces in United’s defence.
Barrios’ early goal gave Atletico confidence, while their ability to remain dangerous throughout the match ensured United were never fully comfortable.
The Spanish side also demonstrated the experience required to manage the game once they had taken the lead.
Rather than becoming unnecessarily open, Atletico continued to wait for opportunities and eventually punished United after Yoro’s dismissal.
Lookman’s goal was the perfect example of Atletico’s persistence. They continued pressing for a second goal and were eventually rewarded late in the contest.
For Atletico, the victory represents an important Champions League result and strengthens their position in the competition.
For United, however, the defeat represents another night in which their weaknesses were exposed.
Manchester United’s Difficult Start
The defeat in Madrid also means Manchester United have now gone five matches without a victory, increasing the pressure surrounding Carrick and the club’s wider football structure.
United’s Premier League campaign has been particularly underwhelming.
After six league matches, the club had collected just six points and sat 13th in the table, with only one Premier League victory to their name. Their recent league match before travelling to Madrid ended in a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur.
Their campaign began with a 2-2 draw against Everton before United defeated Ipswich Town 5-2 in their second league game.
They then suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Manchester City before drawing 1-1 away at Fulham.
Another 1-1 draw followed against Tottenham, leaving United with only one league victory from their opening six matches.
There has also been disappointment outside the Premier League.
United were eliminated from the Carabao Cup after losing 3-2 to Brighton & Hove Albion, while their Champions League campaign has now included a 4-0 victory over Sabah FK and the defeat against Atletico Madrid.
The results paint a picture of a team struggling for consistency.
United can produce impressive moments, but they have repeatedly failed to maintain performances over an entire match.
That inconsistency is particularly concerning given the expectations surrounding the club after their third-place Premier League finish last season.
Carrick Under Increasing Pressure
The situation is also placing Michael Carrick under increasing scrutiny.
Carrick took over a team that finished third last season and returned to the Champions League, creating expectations that United would continue progressing.
Instead, the early months of the new campaign have produced uncertainty.
United’s inability to turn promising performances into victories has become a recurring issue, while defensive mistakes and a lack of attacking efficiency have also contributed to their struggles.
However, Martinez’s comments suggest that some players believe the problems cannot simply be solved by changing the manager.
The defender appeared to question the tendency to focus exclusively on the coach whenever Manchester United struggle.
He pointed towards other areas of the club and suggested that responsibility should also be placed on those making decisions away from the pitch.
That has opened another major debate about United’s recruitment strategy and long-term direction.
Carrick himself attempted to remain measured after the match, but Martinez’s comments have ensured that the defeat in Madrid will be discussed for reasons beyond the scoreline.
United Need a Response
Manchester United now face a crucial period in their season.
Their next Premier League match is away against Leeds United on October 18, before they travel to Italy to face Como in the Champions League on October 21.
They will then host Bournemouth before travelling to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on October 31.
The fixture list provides United with an immediate opportunity to change the mood around the club, but it also presents significant challenges.
For Carrick, the priority will be finding results.
For the players, the challenge will be demonstrating that they can respond to adversity on the pitch.
And for the Manchester United hierarchy, Martinez’s comments have placed recruitment and squad-building firmly back under the spotlight.
The Atletico Madrid defeat was already a serious setback for a club hoping to make an impact in Europe.
But the fallout from Martinez’s interview could prove just as significant.
United now have to find answers quickly.
A strong run of results could calm the growing frustration, but continued disappointment would only intensify questions about Carrick, the squad and the people responsible for building the team.
For now, Manchester United are facing problems at multiple levels, and the defeat in Madrid has made those problems impossible to ignore.
